Aperture Science would like to to remind you that the Companion Cube *cannot* speak, unlike the average student, university administrator, or online rando.

Having all sorts of classrooms is important. Having physical libraries is important even if not for books. Having individual and group study areas is important I'd argue these are vital in the success of any educational institution but antithetical to the business ethos that is permeating higher ed

They’re also for impressing quantitative analysis students with your ability to open seemingly-hopelessly-stuck ground glass joints (students are really good at getting those lids stuck)

This has been my experience as well the last 3 semesters. Information is not always readily available and the program that indicates "good accessibility" is often arbitrary so I find myself removing items that are problematic to improve the "scores" that the college uses.

One thing about all the details about increasing accessibility for students (which I'm 100% on board with) is that what is happening is, at times, so opaque that it makes it much more difficult to create materials

So many of my students end up in spaces in health care or pet care where a dose calculation may be made and someone should be thinking "Do the numbers make sense?" Same for my Ag students who are looking at nutrient distribution per acre. Or just someone who is converting from metric to standard.

I feel like the times my students spend on developing basic mathematical concepts — estimation, algebraic manipulation, dimensional analysis — lead to the some of the most valuable skills they develop in foundational chemistry courses

What are you doing with your midlife existential crisis? No wrong answers. Just trying to see something, as the kids say.

Scoop: For nearly a year, NSF has struggled to make new grants. Now we know that it will not catch up. In fact, NSF will award just 6,100 new grants—a 30% y/o/y decline, itself down from a previous avg. of 11,000+. In fact, the last time NSF awarded so few grants was in the early '80s.

What’s a thing from your area of expertise (or special interest) that you think it would behoove everyone else to know?

Evergreen post is evergreen under the current administration.

It’s really funny that The Art of War is treated as this like alpha male book when it’s clearly meant to be read by ancient Chinese failsons because it’s all “please don’t forget you have to feed your troops” and “if someone asks if you’re going to attack them consider lying about it”

This is a thing? We are allowed to lecture at length to captive airplane passengers? This changes everything, I'm now practicing conference talks on my way to the conference.

Whatever could be said about that claim when he made it in 1962, it soon became undeniable that government vaccine research, distribution, and mandates are objectively among the greatest achievements of civilization. Claiming otherwise is embarrassing, it's like saying you don't wash your hands.
