Fascinating Jeremy, now tell us about the time you cut national insurance twice as an electoral game despite knowing we couldn't afford it.

The BBC did indeed credit Melania with the peace treaty - omitting the ‘the White House said’ aspect that was a crucial element of the story. By the time it’s corrected, the idiots will have moved on, whilst still drooling at the thought of her naked and available for their solitary pleasure.….

Reading too quickly, missed the “against”. Sorry.

Leonardo Carella@leonardocarella.bsky.social

No, that's what I mean. When you create special channels, the state hears disproportionately (and responds to) the concerns and opinions of high-income/education people.

If you want to see in a nutshell the problem I keep raising then it's in the replies to this thread Brexiters have a very focused pitch - out, out, out Joiners are completely at odds on why, how and when And they end up bickering A politician needs to lead and focus a Join campaign

Ian Dunt@iandunt.bsky.social

This is very interesting and pro- Europeans should read it carefully.

Same here, I’ll bet you have the underfloor heating flushed every few years. When we had a traditional boiler the engineer, a friend, also emphasised the importance of flushing the system.

Sue Beesley@suebeesley.bsky.social

*Whispers*.. our heatpump is purring away outside and the house is a steady and very comfy 21C. Haven't touched it for over a year....

some of the hysteria here seems to ignore the fact that this is *optional*? if it looks like it will damage local tourism, mayors can just... not do it! they can change their minds!

Legislation will be tabled in weeks to allow overnight visitor levies, despite fierce opposition from the hospitality sector and some local councils

I just assume that business lobby groups are lying when they drum up worst-case figures to oppose new policies. Like the private school lobby wildly inflating the number of pupils who would leave due to VAT on fees

I'm sorry, but this is such bollocks. Are they seriously suggesting *a quarter* of all tourists would not visit the UK because of a tax which nearly every other European country (not to mention nearly every US state) has? Give over...

Just noticed that #Screwfix website returns a 403 error. I tried switching off my VPN and the site works OK. Can anyone explain why Screwfix do this. I understand sites that don’t want their content viewed outside the UK, but a tools supplier????

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

6/ Russian forces struck Kyiv City with cluster munitions to purposely harm the civilian population, likely as part of wider Russian efforts to distract from Ukraine’s recent battlefield successes and ultimately force Ukraine into capitulation by making daily life untenable.

Has the PHP bug uncovered by AI been overblown? I’m not hearing of any real world hacks using the vulnerability. I am worried that when AI reveals problems, that the mechanisms get out before systems can be patched. Are the AI labs insecure?

ThinkGov reposted

Actually it will get used in the UK because how is the UK going to export it? We don’t have any LNG export liquefaction facilities. But the price will be set on international market benchmarks.

I’d expect the costs to fall on AI companies and the data centres they rely on. Does Trump have a “cunning plan” to crash the US stock market?

Act like Trump - do it anyway. Congress won’t do anything while treason is playing out in real time.

Getting worse, I’ve noticed that the web hosting services I use are relying more on people. Not surprising, the AI agents were, from a users perspective, both time consuming and inaccurate. The self awareness, being customers understanding what AI screws up.

Ian Dunt@iandunt.bsky.social

Before everyone gets too excited by AI becoming self-aware let's just bear in mind that my Google spellcheck still has no idea which word I am trying to type here

I think a lot of people are turning to LLMs for things like recipes. And they're right enough, enough of the time, that the problems aren't terribly obvious to people. (Thus building more reliance on a smaller lane of information transfer & creating, like Google before, an ideal advert channel).

Just checked and of course, the last time there was a Commons vote on this back in 2018, Badenoch voted against the proposals to decant and get on with the restoration of the Palace of Westminster, as the cross-party joint commission had strongly recommended.

Henry Mance@henrymance.ft.com

There's obviously a serious point here, but it's quite funny optics for the Conservative party to complain that it used to be so much quicker to build a stately home.

Repeat after me: 1) PIP isn't an out of work benefit. It is a benefit paid to disabled people to pay for the extra costs of living with a disability. 2) Some PIP claimants work. Some PIP claimants will never able to work at all. 3) Impoverishing people doesn't get them closer to employment

There’s too much caution about calling Farage and Reform racist. They have no such timidity when they threaten to strip us of our rights and protections, to mass deport people and kill them at sea. They routinely insult, perv, vilify and hate people. You don’t ‘nice’ that away. You call it out.

ThinkGov reposted

This is pathetic. Ukraine tested Starlink speed restrictions in Europe and had no issues - the restrictions only exist in Ukraine. The Trump administration is actively helping Russia kill Ukrainians - and risking the lives of US and NATO advisors in Ukraine.

Perhaps. But a moral compass would indicate that's still not a reason to support a trillionaire with a fascist agenda. Not to mention the fact that if all official govt accounts left Twitter en masse, journalists would have to follow them elsewhere or simply not get content.

It’s stunning that Israel tolerates such evil behaviour. The settlers seem to have got their methods from those that attacked Jews in Germany. I’d expect more strong condemnation from the Jewish diaspora.

Trump appears to have decided that Russia / Putin is not a threat. And that he can forget the past. An intelligence report showing how Russia is harming the US is what we need. Plenty of ammunition, e.g. Iran.

Ron Filipkowski@ronfilipkowski.bsky.social

The United States is actively helping Putin murder civilians in Ukraine. Trump is doing everything he can to force Ukraine to surrender to his friend and ally Putin so they can be subjugated by the Russians again.

I think ministers ought to be more worried about the rise of vigilantism than they appear to be. See also groups of “local lads” patrolling areas to “keep communities safe”.
