smileboom doesn't deserve that and also it's depressingly ironic that the fun programming toy made out of the love of coding in a bygone era was the vector for some moron to go "ok calube,, PUT petar griffen in Mario Car"

Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.

extrapolating, i think this is a matter of communication more broadly. if infinite credits is the default main mode, you have to be in-the-know to avoid credit feeding. if continues are presented as something non-default, it's communicated that the game is balanced to be learnable without them

headfallsoff@headfallsoff.com

i think credit feeding is a net good and not the problem. to me learning to clear a shmup is like learning to play a hard song on drums, and so the first thing i do is listen to the song the whole way through. play along a few times with it in my headphones just feeling it out, getting comfortable

Finally managed to get trap15.dev up. Apparently the .dev TLD requires HTTPS!? Big encryption wins again😔But like, why does every browser (except lynx lmfao) _refuse_ to access it through HTTP, that's just insane. Also, fastcgi is a horrible pain in the ass, but at least I'm still php-free!

Painful review of the Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle on Steam that really highlights how destructive the continue system was to people's perception of arcade games. The beat 'em ups mentioned play wildly different from one another if you're actually trying to survive on 1 credit.

The thing about translation news sites like RHDN is that they represent *curation* - ways for people to make sense of what's happening in the scene, what's happening out there. RHDN's "just take everything" stance is breaking down in the face this much spam.

Krokodyl@krokodyl.bsky.social

I looked through the last 100 English fan translations published on RHDN (over 3 weeks), and at least 74 are AI translations. I didn't realize this was the current state of the hobby. Make of that what you will.

"Now, over the years, a newsman learns a number of things that for one reason or another, he just cannot report. It doesn't seem to matter now, so the following people are gay:" "Turn it off." "Just a second."

In Mario Kart Wii, asphalt is slightly shiny, reflecting a band of light ahead of the player. This is implemented cleverly by leveraging something that the Wii is already doing, allowing it to not need to use any sort of additional lighting or post-processing.

I know that it's a longstanding thing that people will try to make the website for their hobby thing look professional and overuse "professional" design language in a way that backfires horribly and makes them look worse, but I hate seeing it on hobby sites so much these days.

playing an old ass game and drawing your own map rules you can have beautiful personal experiences with video games if you simply allow yourself

stuff like this, the team's recent (& not at all out-of-character) comments re: costumes etc are bound to get caught in the tiresome DOA vortex, but they're also reflective of something that goes way beyond one game: JP publishers have become (reasonably) paranoid about upsetting payment vendors

anyway i hope it happens soon i should be able to see "someone made a mister core for the game dot com" and just be happy and joyous instead of immediately seeing "i made this to practice ai" afterwards and being sad. you can't even safely be a weird freak that wants to play the game com these days

This is why self-determination is absolutely vital. And it's why I despise Americans who watch something on Fox News, Jon Oliver or TikTok and start talking about "helping those people". That's exceptionalism brain rot - you're not the "world police", you're an invader, a pillager, a colonizer.

Welp, it's official

everyday you gotta see a post like "Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage decomp is now at 90%" with a crazy AI generated image attached to it for some fucking reason until you die now I guess

Games are engines that run assets; the further you get from this simple truth, the more complex your tech gets. Trying to do code when you could just make assets to do the same thing just makes for more complicated, and less flexible, code.

If menu transitions/intro animations/etc. are tedious when debugging & testing then they're also going to be just as tedious to people playing the game seriously. I pray that all developers will internalize this fact one day

Soviet Russia has fucked me in the ass so I unfortunately have to move domain names, which of course includes my handle here. I'm now at trap15.dev and I apologize for breaking everyone's links to everything. Welcome back to the REAL internet, everybody!!! (also my httpd is being a butt and idk why)

I need to do a lot of maintenance on my web presence sometime soon as things are definitely falling apart over there, but haven't had the brainspace for it since I'm no sysadmin but I still insist on doing it all myself. One of these days it'll all be nice again...

As a veteran programmer I declare Computer Science a pest : quickly destroy your computer before getting contaminated : it will make you smoke, drink, and you don't want to know about the rest.
