"EV car fleets are displacing oil demand, saving oil importers $20 billion since the start of the Hormuz energy crisis. In the six months from March to August 2026, China saved an estimated $14 billion, with EU countries saving $3.1 billion." EVs are the smart economic choice. So EVs will dominate.

But no part was hit as hard as SBE, which went from an average of 800 new grants to just 91, a precipitous, 90% decline. SBE spent just 95 million on new grants, far less than its average of 247 million.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

A hallmark of democratic backsliding is government leaders stealing from taxpayers and using public funds to try to get themselves electoral advantages. Backsliding countries keep the form of elections, but corrupt leaders render them no longer free and fair by putting a state thumb on the scale.

Side-option, though for a much narrower audience, is Drunk Across the Disciplines, where you have people from different fields go off at one another. Like Swarthmore’s Lifeboat Debate, but with cocktails.

Not a surprise. But neat to see.

Agent teams perform better when they communicate This paper shows that giving each agent a sendMessage tool allows even weak agents to perform significantly better than running the same LLM K times in isolation A punch to the gut for GPT-Pro, DeepThink, etc models arxiv.org/pdf/2609.21032

Got disinvited today because the media involved decided that "everything had already been said" about the race science topic and that they would rather focus on "the broader question" of "culture wars" and "academic freedom". Which of course is the framing that the race scientists want

Rebecca Sear@rebeccasear.bsky.social

If the media wants a story about academia which is of real public interest, then they should cover the resurgence of race science, which is providing legitimacy for racism and eugenic ideology in political and public discussions. Unfortunately, there seems to be little interest in this story

Very forceful statement by Terry Tao about AI and math. terrytao.wordpress.com/2026/09/11/a... Note, he is not claiming the models aren't real and powerful. He's talking about how that power should be used. This, I believe, is what all AI discussions should center.

talking about vertebrates like how people talk about invertebrates: I saw a blue jay today! This beautiful bird is native to North America. While its bite is painful, it is nonvenomous & harmless to humans. Unlike most tetrapods, the gray squirrel broods its young internally and gives live birth!

The smaller human in this photo (photographed here in 2009) just got the A levels she needs to study paleontology. She’s been through *a lot* but her love of ancient dead things turned to stone never wavered. Below is part of the tiny museum she made when she was 10. My heart’s bursting a bit rn. ❤️🐚
