My default assumption is that this apparent backdoor in Qwen3.8-Flash-Next is not actually a deliberate backdoor. But people are certainly clever enough to have "oops, this is just an RL artifact" ready as a cover for a deliberate backdoor. And most importantly: model backdoors are a serious risk.

We have always been able to find problems faster than defenders could fix them because fixing shit is you know actually hard

Two high severity CVEs drop on my first day at a PHP shop. Just my luck eh

If software engineering is solved as some idiots say, I’ll find a home in sound engineering :)

How did it go so wrong for America? How??

Remember that time in 1997 the whole internet went down for 12 hours because AS 7007 accidentally re-advertised a whole-internet routing table with AS paths stripped? An amazing amount of shit is still like that

Jess Miers 🦝@jmiers230.bsky.social

Here's what I actually think these incidents reveal (instead of a rogue AI terminator situation): Much of the infra we expect to be hardened is actually being held together by glue and popsicle sticks.

To compensate for the absurd amount of LLM usage at work I’ll be hand writing all personal projects in Haskell from now on :)

not only was she one of the first, she is credited for literally coining the phrase "software engineer". photos like these inspired me so much when I was in school!

ah damn, RIP Margaret Hamilton. she took safety-critical software engineering seriously, and got people to the moon and back. news.mit.edu/2026/margare...

It’ll be hilarious if all the math proofs being generated by AI are based on an obscure contradiction in the axioms of modern math.

Since no axiomatic system can prove its own consistency (thanks Gödel), it just feels stupid to let AI keep generating unintuitive, obscure proofs that only pass formal verification and can’t be demonstrated in practise.

Correction: that should read “…no axiomatic system *sufficiently strong to express arithmetic*…”

Well, regardless, congratulations to Ice Cube.

The IceCube neutrino detector has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in physics. The Trump administration has proposed slashing its budget in half in 2027.

What’s the probability the Irkutsk lab worker death is actually totally unrelated to plague research and just a wild coincidence? As far as I know the broken test tube story is both incredible and mere speculation at this point.

Feel free to use observation/assumption interchangeably above, as it’s meant to be hypothetical

I ascribe a higher probability to the hypothesis that there was an exposure event and that it does not involve your “garden variety” plague.

To be precise, that is in comparison to the probability of an exposure event involving garden variety plague. In both cases it’s conditional on the observation that the exposure event was reported and handled as best as possible, which still resulted in death.

Suppose she did become exposed to garden variety Yersinia Pestis despite safety protocols appropriate to a BSL-3 lab. What’s the probability she dies given the precise moment of exposure is known well in advance of symptom onset and that antibiotics exist and are effective when treated early?

Some people say you should learn C to learn how the computer works… Well I claim that you should learn Turing machines, the Universal Turing Machine or equivalently the Lambda Calculus to learn how the computer works.

yall, im going to call it. i'll agree that opus 5.5 has made significant headroom on non-engineering stuff. obviously both ant and oai are RLing hard on non-eng tasks. but im just really not seeing that big of gains in real world engineering problems and concepts

There's no slowing down frontier models by regulation that wouldn't lead to regulatory capture. But we could simply force all AI model companies to release their model weights openly. It's the world's data after all and nothing would slow their funding/progress more effectively and universally.

P(aul) Frazee@pfrazee.com

Slow down frontier model development. Bring open weights to current frontier. Build out local inference providers, stabilize hardware prices, focus on cost and token throughput for a bit. Get our software updated to handle what's being thrown at us. I would not mind spending a beat on distribution.

Hassett, translated: Now that we have fewer immigrants, we have fewer jobs. When we said that immigrants were taking your jobs, it's because we were lying that there's a fixed pool of jobs. You rubes fell for the lump of labor fallacy.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Hassett: "The breakeven job number is a lot lower than it used to be because we're tightened the border. So 130,000 jobs this year is sort like 200,000 two or three years ago because we don't have this massive inflow of immigrants that are working. So these are really great jobs numbers."
