I'm a scientist studying fluid dynamics in the cores of rotating planets and stars. I mostly post pics of clouds and timelapses. All media by me. He/him.

1/ There’s an instructive debate underway in the open review pages of @egu.eu journal Ocean Science. It’s about whether we can tell if the #AMOC is already on a trajectory towards collapse. What I think it really teaches is how scientists judge evidence, & why that differs from assessing risk. 🧵

What’s the most unsettling book you’ve read? I answered this question along with several others for Nautilus Magazine.

Replying to @afeinstein20.bsky.social
@tdietterich.bsky.social How will arXiv handle this? The author is explicitly claiming weaker responsibility than that required for submission. info.arxiv.org/help/moderat...

Someone please explain to me how could the "author" of this preprint "take responsibility for submitting this paper and for the accuracy of this statement" when he clearly states he has no training in astronomy, and cannot verify the results, meaning that he doesn't fully understand his own paper?
interestingggg.... paper on the arXiv tonight of a new planet candidate found with and written up entirely by AI, including the caveat, "The author has not independently checked the analyses and does not have the expertise to verify every technical detail." arxiv.org/abs/2610.28575

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.
This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

this is just to say i have eaten the moon that was in my orbit and which you were probably wanting to observe forgive me it was delicious so crunchy and so cold
One of the great mysteries in astronomy has been why Venus has no moon. Now a new theory provides a simple answer: It might have been eaten. www.wired.com/story/venus-...

Potassium and sodium are significant sources of electrons in hot Jupiter atmospheres, and thus they play an important role in the atmospheric coupling to the magnetic field, among other things. I have a paper out that looks that their thermochemical kinetics. #exoplanets arxiv.org/abs/2609.26432
