As I prepared to erase [twitter] I realized I couldn't leave Dad behind when his values meant so much to me: he belongs here, I hope y'all don't mind. This is a reproduction of a thread from Dec 2019 that reminds me to stand with my neighbours. And yes, he was laid to rest in a toolbox.

I've been seeing a lot the "time to get to work to build a Canada that works for Alberta" in the wake of the referendum and I'm sorry but no, fuck that. That accepts the framing by conservatives (and fueling the idiotic separatism movement) that something is broken and in need of fixing.

Alberta 811 has such high call volumes to book covid and flu vaccines including Novavax, which is only bookable thru 811 or some pharmacies, you can’t get through…. You get transferred to the line & get a virtual voice says an abruptly “we have high call volumes. GOOD BYE!” And it hangs up.

With great consistency, people who prefer authoritarianism to democracy envision themselves in charge. Could be them personally, could be vicarious, but they're always the boot, not the face. It's basically a way to say everyone should shut up and accept that we're doing my preferences, not theirs.

The Congo Basin is the world's largest carbon sink, absorbing 1.5 BILLION tons of CO2 yearly. It's Africa's lungs. And it's being logged right now. If the Amazon is burning, the Congo is bleeding. Protect it. #SaveCongoBasin

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

I had a day from hell yesterday and had to clean my entire (under renovation) house for suprise guests with 90 min notice. The very best friend in the world showed up with her vaccuum, cleaning supplies, and a wild-blueberry crumble (*still hot). Also the largest puffball I've ever seen.

A win! A federal appeals court upheld an EPA rule requiring polluters to help pay for cleaning up toxic PFAS “forever chemicals,” rejecting an industry challenge to the rule. This keeps the financial burden where it belongs on the companies responsible for the pollution!

I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

The rise in Niño 3.4 region sea surface temperatures over the past few weeks has been nothing short of astonishing. We are now hotter than any days during the 1997/1998 super El Niño event, and we are still many months from the peak.
