UPDATE: Trump’s DOJ is fighting to send armed agents back to the homes of naturalized citizens to ask about their voter eligibility. This comes after a lower court blocked the armed visits in 9 states.

If you've seen the ugliest vehicle ever made, that was Elon. Those videos showing obscene data center pollution? Also Elon. If you've seen starving African kids being turned away from shuttered aid distribution centers, that was Elon. A car burning on the side of the road? You guessed it

Okay, apparently I was wrong. Alaska isn't picking up what DOJ is putting down in the "Alaskans too stupid to understand RCV" case. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Note that the defendant, AK elections director Carol Beecher, is the one who tried to keep Dan J. Sullivan off the ballot. Wondering if this is a collusive effort to get a stipulated settlement, as in MO with SOS Hoskins and the gerrymandered map kerfuffle. www.elections.alaska.gov/wp-content/u...

The CA vote purge case just keeps getting weirder. Yesterday the DOJ filed supplemental declarations, including from a Shasta Co official named Clinton Curtis, who turns out to be a wackodoo who claimed he could tell fake ballots by smell. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

washingtonpost.comAn election chief lost. Then he padlocked the ballots and called the FBI.Shasta County, California, where election doubts run so deep that some don’t trust results even when their choice prevails, offers a glimpse of what happens when distrust in voting systems takes root.

Lot of folks (self included) expressing despair that despite aggressive prosecuting fascists ("doing everything right") Brazil was still going to get Bolsonaro-ed and the fact this guy gtfo-ed as quickly as he did should be a big signal for the AOC DOJ to go *hard* in 2029.

If Americans need our little southern recipe for how to defeat fascism it goes like this: - Put people in the streets by standing for popular demands (wages, healthcare, public services) - Do not engage with fascists online - Do not succumb to doomsayers or media-driven narratives - Be happy

Congrats to Lula on overcoming Mark Zuckerberg and Donald Trump to defeat Hospital Pervert Jr., even as his opposition literally blocked off roads and turned off bus service during election day. Fascists are scary but they are always, 100% of the time, ultimately gigantic fucking losers.

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

There is an international, well-connected network of fascists promoting far-right candidates in elections (and coups) across the world. The guy who owns the site Yglesias posted this on is one of their leaders. Be careful of people advocating for their opponents to disarm!

Dan Mauler 🎃@meelar.bsky.social

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

Restrict the advertising. Require lengthy spoken disclaimers (“most gamblers will lose money, some will lose everything”, etc). If this isn’t enough, require gamblers to place bets in physical locations.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

i don't think anyone should run explicitly on banning online gambling but i do think that a democratic-led government should just quietly take steps to undermine the industry and create an inhospitable regulatory environment

And the lesson is that, despite his flaws, he had a committed focus on improving the lives of ordinary working people in tangible ways, he was uncompromising in opposition to fascists, and when he lost the first round he used it to motivate his supporters to throw everything at the second round.

And again, it's worth noting that this happened despite Lula being an incredibly flawed candidate. His son and some of his key political allies are embroiled in genuine corruption scandals. He's 80 years old. Crime is incredibly high. But he's won despite those flaws. There's a lesson in that.

The Bolsonarists didn't change their minds, they didn't suddenly stop believing that their man could do no wrong and that Lula was an existential threat to Brazil. They were simply outvoted by those who refused to risk a return to fascism, and decided not to sit this election out.

Bolsonaro had corrupt media on his side, Meta interference on his side, US propaganda operations, and his party's officials actively sabotaging public transport in Lula strongholds to prevent turnout. Yet he was still beaten by the power of voter turnout.

weirdbr.bsky.social reposted

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.
