The New York Times wrote articles that were like "the impossible-to-characterize elusive politics of Elon Musk / he's lost interest in politics" right before he became *literally the largest GOP donor in history* the next election cycle. Twice. Two times!

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

This would be the most any person has donated in any election cycle. And #2 is also Musk, in 2024.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

Yes. The conservative scheme for education is a three-way split: high-priced academies for the children of the wealthy, religious instruction to brainwash the middle class, and a rump of prison-like public schools to discipline the lower class into obedience.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

the other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.

Exactly. There is this insistence by way too many people that young white men are simply not capable of responsibility for their own words and actions, insofar as even daring to treat them as equals and adults is seen in this instance as “punching down”.

It’s helpful to have an actual Labour MP saying right out that it’s not what transgender people do or say that is the problem: it’s their presence that she objects to, their existence. Yes, this is what it always was, and these people just keep winding each other up and up to ever more extreme views

people keep making movies where the premise is "it's kind of like a man but it looks like a monstrous freak but it's nice and sexy and doesn't abuse the woman so it's basically the most romantic thing ever" and men keep not getting it.

So, this very sympathetic piece where the subject is “a lifelong Democrat who had voted for Trump for the first time in 2024”. 5 minutes of checking his facebook shows pro Trump posts as far back as 2019, and a post saying that he “stands with Trump” posted just a couple of days after Trumps coup.

Mr. Dan Zak@mrdanzak.com

A Haitian man legally immigrated to Ohio, then was given an ankle monitor bc Trump withdrew his status. He threw himself in front of truck. The trucker, who voted for Trump, is haunted. “Pierre was doing what he was supposed to do. We did not do right by him.” www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...

Now I’m not saying I’m a better journalist than the writer, I’m not even a journalist, but yes, I’m a better journalist than the supposed Pulitzer winner who wrote that piece. Embarrassing.

Miles Smith@milothepsychic.starbase80.net

He's made pro-Trump and conspiracy-laden posts from Trump I on to Trump II. You've got this sort of post right after the Insurrection. Dude was always pro-Trump.

Wild that he gets this coverage after he packed the Utah Supreme Court in order to try to prevent it from enforcing a referendum-passed gerrymandering ban to steal a congressional seat for the GOP (and disenfranchise his state's largest city)

PBS News@pbsnews.org

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox has emerged as a prominent voice calling on Americans to step back from the political hostility gripping the country. The Republican governor is expanding on that message in a new book. https://to.pbs.org/3VmTJnx

Quite difficult to obscure just how radicalised and extreme this stuff is, which is awkward because we have been told in no uncertain terms that it's actually *opposing* it that's the violent extremist position. Bit of a pickle, make no mistake.

Israeli minister calls Shabana Mahmood an Islamist, because erm, erm, erm

Regular reminder that self described Nazi Nina Power is still a part of the far-right “Free Speech Union”, after her failed SLAPP suit against one of her critics. The Orwellian named “Free Speech Union” hates freedom of speech, instead they want the far right to have exclusive speech privileges.

Guardian US@us.theguardian.com

Judge said Nina Power and her friend’s social media posts had ‘the whiff of threat and antisemitism’

So Evan is either lying about what he believes, or he’s evil on a level that I would describe as “shedded their own humanity” levels of demonic.

ANTHROPIC EXEC: “.. I personally think it is >10% within the next decade.”

Having some friends who are immigrants in Germany, this is just a bald-faced lie, both regarding public discourse, and the general sentiment. Regarding the latter, the situation is getting so bad they’re even contemplating emigrating again, even though they’re the “correct” kind of immigrants.

Robin Brooks@robin-j-brooks.bsky.social

You can't really talked about migration and deportations in Germany. That gets you cancelled. So people don't talk about it and vote AfD instead. That's the basic issue and goes far beyond Sachsen-Anhalt, which is why yesterday's AfD win is so important... robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/why-is-ger...

On August 12, 1958, fifty-seven of the world's most influential jazz musicians gathered in Harlem and took what's considered the most iconic photo in jazz history. When 2026 opened, Sonny Rollins was the last living before passing almost 4 months ago. Today would've been his 96th birthday

Phil Lewis@phillewis.bsky.social

Sonny Rollins, one of the most influential Jazz musicians of our time, died this afternoon. He was 95

I feel like the bigger news is that a Democratic Party aligned think tank is urging a shooting war with China but idk, maybe I’m the crazy one.

The far-right UK “Free Speech Union” still has Nina Power, who ineffectually tried to silence criticism with the help of state power, as one of their people. This is not uncommon, Toby Young has a history of cheering on SLAPP lawsuits from rightwingers trying to silence their opposition.

This is the definition of “freedom of speech” the far right uses, both in the US, and the UK: the “freedom” of the far right to say whatever they want, without pushback, and the “freedom” of the far right to silence everyone else.

Case in point, sending a legally threatening letter over legal speech because you don’t like what the person said. Joke of an organization, literally anti-free speech. Toby Young is a deranged racist fascist who wants to silence everyone slightly to the right of him and his fellow travelers.

William Gillis 🏴@rechelon.bsky.social

Beyond cheering SLAPP lawsuits, Toby Young directly legally threatened my anarchist collective to try to make us to take down a post exposing a racist 1) The british have no idea what free speech is, 2) little tory dipshits are totally unprepared for responses like "meet me in a dennys parking lot"

This got me blocked by a lib calling Bill Kristol a centrist.

zenlike@zenlike.bsky.social

Bill Kristol is a neocon and a self avowed Reaganite and was literally in Republican administrations, what the fuck are you talking about.

It's less "is this a praisable thing," more "what other consequences are available," I think. Vigilante murder is a terrible way to deal with terrible people; but it's always on the table. When terrible people take off all the other options like jail or justice I don't know what they expect.

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/
