I spend most of my time playing video games or writing code but I'm still bad at both. Dancer main, love sucking at factory games, enjoyer of ludonarrative harmony. PNW, 30-something, he/they

Steam NextFest thread! It's kind of a mess this year, I feel like I'm mostly good at sniffing out slop from the header art and screenshots but there have been a handful where I ended up being disappointed by the AI disclosure on the store page. Still found some fun demos in the first couple days!

Probably Stolen felt to me like Papers, Please meets Potion Craft. What I played in the demo seemed very basic but there were glimpses of a larger variety of minigames and other twists to the formula that could really spice it up. A bit slow to start but I can see myself getting really into this.

Echidna was a satisfying incremental shmup with excellent pixel-art visuals. The demo content ended before things got too terribly crazy but I can see a lot of potential for the automation/idle and buildcrafty sides of things too. Likely xmas gift to myself on EA release if it plays well on Deck.

Dreadmoor! I didn't have time to actually finish the demo content but I'm eagerly looking forward to it. My first impression was "ooo first-person Dredge!" and that doesn't seem too far off so far. Might not pick up the full game until EA is done but looking forward to it very much!

God this fucking sucks. I knew it was only a matter of time after SWTOR went to Broadsword; EA has a long history of killing off studios doing actual good work and it could only ever get worse under the new ownership. I was still hoping the promise of the next ME would be enough of a lifeline.

BREAKING: Electronic Arts is cutting 400 jobs and shutting down BioWare, the legendary development studio behind Dragon Age and Mass Effect. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Old EA would never let an IP go but maybe we can hope that Kushner and the Saudis might be in the mood to strip it for parts and somehow miraculously the worlds of Dragon Age and Mass Effect might miraculously find their way into the hands of a studio that gives a damn? Ugh, shit's bleak.

Last one from my first day of demos was Complexia. The visuals are gorgeous and the gameplay felt fresh. The combo system is simple on the surface but I think it'll be extremely satisfying to get good at. The demo chapter has me intrigued to see more of the world and story too. Hyped all around!

First up was Tetric! It's a really interesting concept and I enjoyed trying to feel out the various mechanics. I really enjoy the art style as well. The blur effect over everything could be turned down a bit and I think I'd like more feedback about how good/bad I'm playing but it's fun!

Fedex said "expected delivery day" for 3 days in a row. I didn't actually believe it on Saturday, yesterday was plausible, and today it actually went to "out for delivery. EVEN SO, all 3 days, we hit like 5pm or so and it changes to this lmao. Maybe package tracking is just kinda bullshit.

how do i describe my game without sounding insane. "yeah its a rhythm game but theres a character building rpg system but you have to play a board game to build your stats and then select from a roguelike looking ui to play the rhythm game to finish your umamusume-ass builds"

open weights model? no I said open Waits model. it just makes vague growling noises and talks a lot about New Orleans.

I would like to note that by "feeling bullish" I mostly mean that I can envision a future where the OpenAIs and Anthropics of the world are no longer exempt from all regulation and have ceased stealing IP and poisoning the air, and an equitable solution has been designed wrt training data,

and less generalized more sustainably-operated models are being implemented in places where they make sense by people who know and understand their work (much like how ML already has been used in research settings!). Am I dreaming? Maybe. Maybe GPUs and RAM will be affordable again then too.

On Earth 2, we can't believe how good the new HBO Animorphs show looks. "They nailed the morphing," people enthuse. The nonbinary actor playing Ax's human morph is cutting it up on the Las Culturistas podcast. The actress playing Rachel has handcuffed herself to a data center

it's a shame solarpunk came to mean "soft play area for anarcho primitivists" because what if my panels extended from my back like six vast mirrored wings and started charging my rail gun which discharged a tungsten-carbide rod into your face

There are even people who were once Harry Potter adults and who recovered who are great. Being a Harry Potter Adult in 2026, however, is a very serious indicator that you are either a genuine shithead or so totally checked out that you’re basically a sea cucumber and shouldn’t be able to type

how cool would it be if we had different words for "incredibly computationally intense and kinda troubling but startlingly effective coding tools seeing massive uptake", "dumb UI shit nobody asked for polluting everything", "cheating helper", and "computer program for identifying bird calls or wev"

All I want to do is slay more spires. Or attempt to, at least. On A3 with necro/defect, A2 with regent/silent, and still have yet to win a run with good old ironclad. Eventually I'll get good again.

Good thread, and some good news to counteract the spiraling that starts to happen anytime I consider the state of the world for too long. It's all of us or none of us.
