I don’t think people understand how devastating the end of net neutrality, and consumer protections around internet connectivity, are going to be. Imagine the situation where you pay for 4 or 5 different streaming services, each with different “exclusives” — but for the Internet itself.

Think you pay too much for Cable and Internet now? Wait. The pricing tiers and "add ons" and "subscriptions" will be staggering. Want News Networks? Surcharge, Streaming Netflix, Hulu, Disney, additional Premium charge. People will be screaming for the Biden inflation once they see trumps.

The worst part is that these companies are evil, but not moronically so. They’re just going to boil us with slow, creeping cost increases for what was basic service. 2026: Now HD video is $5 extra 2028: Now video is $5 extra, and every steaming service you want HD on is $2 per service Ad infinitum

And don’t forget the cost of everything on the internet will be going up too. There’s no way with net neutrality dead that Comcast, et. al. aren’t going to every major “edge provider” & doing the “those are some nice customers, be a shame if they couldn’t get to you” even more than they do now.

It sadly worked for Comcast's re-introduction of capped data plans to home internet. They rolled it out incrementally enough and early enough that few enough people cared enough to protest. Now, years later, the cap has only gone up by 200 gigs a month and people use more data than ever.

100% There should be a nationwide movement to hold public forums and meet ups for researched news and social gathering. We lived thousands of years without it, they've made us feel like we need it. American business is like heroin business, they want you to get addicted then you pay.

Musk will already be hiring the people he needs to filter out 'undesirable material' (CNN, BBC, Washington Post, Wikipedia, Bluesky, etc) from Starlink internet services. The next step is for FoxNet and MurdochNet and MuskNet to start offering cheaper packages with their selected content only.

I'm also worried about ISPs being able to throttle or block websites and services that their CEOs don't like or are in a rivalry with. Or charge extra to get to them. They probably wouldn't even be transparent about it, you just wouldn't be able to get to certain news sites or channels...

The obvious way to break this is to make exclusives uneconomical. People are going to have to decide that some of these consumer goods just aren’t worth it. It’s certainly not a good outcome, but consumer boycotts really are the only way.

This is true, but a vast number of things are not services in the ways that are easily differentiable by an ISP at scale. What they will try to bundle are media services (peacock, Disney+, etc) and probably large social media properties. Distributed systems (we’re using one) are harder.

How many working class people understand terms like Net Neutrality ? Unless it can be put into common parlance it won't interest much of anyone. I was naively thinking the media or news folks would do just that ...?

Live TV is already kinda like that (again) - witnessed by me trying to not pay extra for a "live" Disney account last night... uh even tho we already had a disney+ acct and a Hulu acct and a espn+ acct it cost another 60 bucks to get the game on ESPN for 3 hours It sucks and I don't like it!

Shortly before NN was enacted, Comcast intentionally leveraged congested backbone traffic from Netflix to screw up user experience and end a payment dispute between the two. As a result, much of the Chicago area (and more) had very slow or no Netflix a few times a week. Not looking forward to it.

Right, it’s not like being an engaged member of society or accessing vital resources has largely moved to online-only access in the past 20 years. Worse comes to worst, get your news from local print media which I believe is definitely still going strong everywhere in America!

We had net neutrality rules for all of two years, between 2014 and 2016. The Infrastructure Act funded rural broadband and has almost entirely closed that gap. It’s not ending, it just not restarting. This isn’t worth our despair.

If America trashes net neutrality and lurches into open fascism then people will host the internet infra elsewhere where it is properly protected.

Someone will need to implement this. If you're a person who could or would consider it, please just don't. Thanks in advance, All of us.

I’d be curious to know how well state laws, eg California’s, will limit the ability of bad actors to abuse the system. Sort of like how they can single-handedly affect the decisions of car manufacturers to build EVs.

ISPs can assign services into classes and charge for quality of streaming delivery. will quickly lead to monopolies by those who can pay and stagnation because startup customer experience will suck. great though if you want to control and shape thought & culture

These people are so short sighted and greedy they are going to kill the goose that laid the golden eggs. So many electronic devices are devised based on internet connectivity, which will become out of reach for average US consumers.

“crucially, the telephone service merely transmits that which a speaker creates; it does not access information.” The 6th circuit’s brains are fully baked

By ending Chevron Deference SCOTUS has ushered in an era of chaos in which corporations will bog down the courts with suits over every minuscule rule. The effect is to make the federal govt a toothless regulator. Just another example of Trump’s SCOTUS working against America.

Refuse to use the internet if that happens. People will fight back, they can only do what you let them do. The reason this is happening is because a lazy uninformed populace vote against their best interest. People think the government is in control and that's not how it's supposed to work.
