Before you are tempted to use "the Constitution isn't a suicide pact" ever again to justify whatever restrictions or government power you are after, think about what that argument enables.

Mike Lee is a traitor to the Constitution, should have been removed from office with the other J6ers, or shamed into resigning.

How, exactly, is our country in anyway even disadvantaged by coming up with a way to claim as many people as possible as Americans????

I agree with Mike Lee, because as Benjamin Franklin signed the Declaration of Independence he famously said: "If we do not hang together, we shall surely...have nothing to worry about because each of us, individually, can handle this shit no problem fr lmao.”

Patently false: that’s exactly what it compels us to do. We are compelled to follow the Constitution, which specifies procedures for changing it. Don’t like something? Propose a change. While we consider your proposal, we’ll continue to follow the Constitution as it is written.

Tragic that the framers didn’t include a mechanism to amend the Constitution. If they had Americans might have had the opportunity to turn itself into a death cult with a crazy fetish for universal unrestricted access to guns.

The Thomas More character in “A Man for all Seasons” said it well in his parable about cutting down the forest of the law to catch the Devil. “And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat?”

And this is the same retort of people who don't understand that the people use when they don't understand that giving the government power to restrict speech they don't like invariably gives it the power to restrict speech they do like.

Sorry man. When an asshole like Mike Lee says immigration will kill the country I don't have to pretend like he's arguing in good faith and now I'm trapped by his logic to end immigration. Nor do I need to pretend that SCOTUS isn't picking outcomes and then working backwards for the justification.

Illegal immigration isn't the suicide pact! It's literally the 2nd Amendment. Guns are so lethal now that over 24,000 US citizens successfully killed themselves last year.

Not replacement theory, but “the Constitution is not a suicide pact” as an argument. (No good faith argument for replacement theory IMO.) For instance, the pardon power should not be interpreted to allow a president to preemptively immunize someone to assassinate members of Congress.

I think at the very least, you should have to give some evidence that a given direction, as dictated by the constitution, is *actually* suicidal before trying to rewrite it. On the topic of immigration they've never been able to do better factually than "but it might be less white here someday"

But Ari it is a suicide pact if you think that death = a country that guarantees equal rights to non-whites and non-Christians is death and then also think that maybe the 14th Amendment was specifically designed to guarantee those rights

The Constitution isnt a suicide pact It doesnt compel us to allow weapons of war to be in the hands of civilians killing tens of thousands every year Hey this is fun Mike!

I mean a lot the ppl that wrote the constitution had, a decade earlier, pledged their “lives, fortunes, and sacred honor” so, yeah, kind of is a suicide pact, senator
