El-Sayed: "Imagine if instead of paying that to your health insurance company, whose CEO makes $20m a year, you paid a little bit more in taxes for healthcare you wouldn't lose. I think all of us would a lot more interested in that system if we knew our healthcare would be free at point of care"

"But for me to get Universal Healthcare, that means someone else will get Universal Healthcare, including brown People, and black People, and gay/trans People,... and that's not the America I want to be part of", ... says every eligible & able voter who doesn't vote, or votes Republican.

It’s crazy the people who say ‘but taxes are higher’ You can’t tell me that the taxes would be higher per month than the $800 I pay for shitty health insurance with deductibles and copays

Roughly 2-3%, if 10k monthly pay = $300 at worst for example. Full coverage, no bills, ambulance free. No worries. Not forgetting, you stop paying when you reach pension age.

We should also start pointing out US companies have expenses companies in other countries don't have. Health insurance. If they can stop paying for our Health Insurance, they could pay us higher wages.

The Republicans want all their cronies and donors to continue making money acting as insurers and middlemen. Private profits that add up to the largest administrative costs of any national healthcare system in the world.

I fell and broke bones in both my feet on Friday. Ambulance to emergency, x-rays, saw the emergency doctor, got crutches and shower chair, taxi home, and follow up appointments arranged at the fracture clinic. Cost? Zero Where am I? The Communist Republic of Australia.

When looking at the 4 primary types of political economy you can see that many countries have been extremely successful with social democracy. The ppl there are considered to be some of the happiest in the world & also have less crime. I have no problem with using taxes for ppl over ballrooms & war

Governing shouldn't be this hard. The media can't comprehend that proper governing can and should work if we we structure it to work for the people and not United Healthcare.

Imagine how much better it you could deal with your employer if your families healthcare wasn’t on the line. What if it was just about working conditions and wages

As long as mainstream medias are against him, he'll have a tough time getting his message across. It's obvious they don't support him. He's a threat to them because all news hosts make over a million a year.

But but but What taxes would you have left to murder brown children in the middle east? Surely the people who caused Jesus to die on the cross so they could continue to make money, in their temples, would be angry? Won't someone think of the medieval death cult instead of their own family's?

We would pay more in takes but we would have more money in our pockets because he wouldn't be paying +$300 per person for health insurance. M4A would save us $$ Not cost us more

Little known fact, companies get a nice tax cut as an incentive to offer (crappy) healthcare to employees. If companies had to pay that money as a tax, it could help fund universal healthcare w/o us paying too much more.

save you're hate for someone who rapes children. She's not a good reporter, she doesn't know how to ask the follow up. She's taken the chicken shit way out in a few interviews. But hates a strong word.

Don’t forget that Trump with complicit Republicans started A War & now our troops are not getting enough food, or necessities to live on - meanwhile the Liar & Chief lives like a king & continues his corruption & hateful policies while we are paying a steep price for his incompetence & stupidity

They wouldn't be paying "more". Actually, they'd be paying less for the universal healthcare system. I somehow feel like it's so hard for an average American to grasp their minds around it.

Australian here, we have a 2% levy on income and it pays for our Medicare system and Pharmaceutical benefits. Public hospitals are free, meds basically cost around $30 for a box that lasts a month with a capped max yearly cost.

And that is not even factoring in that you are paying a lot more for your premiums than you think. People say, "my company has great insurance" but beyond the premiums you pay the company is cutting your raises in half to pay for their part of the premium costs.

Exactly. Not to mention the situations in which you get injured and you're covered by a premium insurance, and in the end, you still get a hospital bill in thousands or tens of thousands of dollars. That's crazy.

Popular politics is driven by sloganism. Here, they just slap a label on it, "socialism", and for many Americans that's like invoking the antichrist. Neither reason nor logic ever enter the equation.

As long as it covered things - yes. But if we ust switch from one system that won't cover procedures and necessary things to another system that rejects claims and won't cover things then what's the point? We all pay for some kind of health care - we just want to get it.

How about making all corps pay a fee to fund healthcare in America based on their employment levels and profits? Everyone needs it and everyone pays for healthcare one way or another.

The average UHC nation pays 60% of what the USA pays for healthcare. Because we're paying for lobbying and advertisements and corporate profits. But we can't do it because some people are convinced that taxes are evil and/or they'll be damned before anyone else gets something for free.

This message will not resonate because it uses the words “raise taxes”. The correct framing is: you would pay less than you do now, for better coverage, and not enrich a CEO whose job it is to rip you off.

CEOs need a max multiple of their lowest paid employee. call it 10x. all these billionaires would suddenly not be billionaires (Bezos, Walton) because they exploit people for minimum wage. oh, how the world would improve if CEOs didn’t make (not kidding here) 63,000% more than minimum wage

America lost hundreds of thousands of jobs to Asian car makers in the 70’s to the present not merely because of wage differences, but because American companies build the cost of employee healthcare into the price of car. Competing countries governments pay those costs.

This is still a problem. Our healthcare goes up exponentially each year and it’s killing our manufacturing jobs. That and energy make us highly uncompetitive.

I’m not sure it’s more in taxes. If you take 75-50% of what we pay in to insurance companies I’m sure we’d all have comprehensive medical, dental, hearing, home care, nursing homes & drugs at zero cost-pay. money That includes employer covering employees care. And those percentages maybe lower.

Sounds scandinavian. 👍🏻 Example: I'm swedish(🇸🇪). My oldest daughter need braces for at least 2 years. It's already paid by our taxes, i don't need to take out my wallet even once. 👍🏻

...last summer i got my worst headache ever, turned out to be the flu, but before i knew, i tought i had a stroke. 12 hrs in hospital, i met 3 doctors, had 2 blood samples and a spinal cord sample tested + skull CT. That time i had to pay 400 SEK (approx 40$) admin. fee I love to brag about 🇸🇪😅

Everyone should read this .. dispels most myths about why we can’t have it here. Also the case is a more simple, moral one. We decided to let people suffer and die vs giving them the care they need. No system is perfect

My family of 3 pays $17k per year just in premiums. Our deductible is $6k. OOP max is $13k. You could double my taxes and it would still be cheaper than taxes plus insurance. The capitalist propaganda has poisoned generations over this. It’s insane.

I find it notable that Elizabeth Warren tried running for president on this and it tanked her presidential run, because the voters instantly balked at the idea of taxes being raised even after being told it'd be the same or less than the premiums it'd replace. Did we perhaps mature since then?

It is cruelty that your health care is tied to your job in a tumultuous economy. I have a great job with great health care included. I recognize my privilege in that. Even so, all it takes is a few bad quarters, and the company could lay me off. Then what?

I just had emergency surgery last Monday. I’m also 25 years cancer survivor. I will get a bill for $45 for the ambulance. My family paid for parking when visiting me. I’m Canadian and universal healthcare has saved my life 3 times.

It’ll never happen even though 150 countries have socialized medicine. So many people have been brainwashed against it. America citizens are the world leaders at voting against their own interests, or voting for people that vote against their interests.

On the other hand it is fun getting a surprise 4-figure bill because even though you went to an in-network facility, it turned out the secretary behind the desk was out of network. Oh and one of the tests they ran wasn't covered but you had no way of ever knowing this.

Since my monthly premium is $1500, I guarantee my annual tax increase would be nowhere near 20,000! I’d pay $2000 more PER YEAR for M4A and Bernie’s numbers had our tax burden lower than even that. My savings would be astronomical

Like Obama attempting to reform healthcare, El-Sayed begins with the assumption that we have to live with insurance companies controlling our lives. We're the only country in the world that assigns an essential *human right* like healthcare to the greedy insurance industry. Why?

A bit more in taxes commiserate to a reduction on overall medical costs (insurance, copay and pop) and ease of system use (surprise!) would be refreshing

Polite correction: If you pay "a little bit more in taxes" for healthcare it's pre-purchased 𝙉𝙊𝙏 𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙚. It means you don't get extra bills. Rethuglicons are already saying Dems like to give "free stuff". That isn't true 𝙄𝙁 you've pre-paid via your taxes.

“Yes but you have to wait so long to see a doctor in Canada!” Says the smug American waiting 2 months to get a routine checkup, paying a co-pay, co-insurance and on the phone with UHC to find out why they moved his medication to a new classification and the price went up to $1,200 a month.

I got diagnosed with large B cell lymphoma in August, saw a haematologist/oncologist in September, started treatment in October. The only reason for the delay was, I didn’t know if I wanted to do treatment. The cost- max $12 parking per visit.

I wish people would spell it out clearly - if we had universal healthcare, you might pay a little more in taxes *but* you would no longer have to pay your health insurance premium and co-pays.

If I understand what you mean, you can’t just print money (figuratively speaking) and expect it to have any value. That is textbook inflation.

Imagine not spending five trillion dollars a year for some of the worst healthcare in the world. The economy would boom by removing the gross negligence for profit in our healthcare system. 530,000 bankruptcies a year due to healthcare.

The math is simple: subtract the the increase in taxes - which would be lower than what most people pay in insurance premiums now - from what is being paid to private insurance now.

Remove the triple-dipping middlemen, insurance companies, make it legal to negotiate drug prices, remove half the untested drugs from the market, and healthcare would cost about $1200.00 a year for everyone.

What are you paying now for medical, dental, vision combined? The math is so straightforward, yet we hear this bullshit talking point Welker is pushing over and over again.

It’s great Healtcare here in US IF IF you work for big corporations who subsidize quality insurance. But it’s not fair and leaves so many out. That is wrong. But do give US credit for the amazing innovations . We were, and who knows since Trump the world leaders

There are some learned experts who say our healthcare system is not working for most unless you can afford the best of the best. Some are claiming prescription medications are the number one preventable cause of death in the US, and not from patient misuse or illicit use.

The healthcare itself is good. But what we're getting is PA denial after denial, appeals, peer to peers, more and more paperwork, more rules, more regulations and more and more people are dying because of this relentless drive to prevent physicians from caring for their patients.

He's talking about how it is in Australia. Wake up US citizens. I paid less in AU taxes and supplemental insurance for a family of 5 than I pay for 2 people in the US. And my US health plan is leaving the ACA exchange next year.

This is absolutely true. Retired, living off a modest self funded income with affordable health insurance and recently had a hip replacement that cost me $0. Demand guaranteed affordable healthcare! Wake Up America!!

The USA is a sick nation, allowing CEOs, VPs, and health care executives to make millions getting rich off sick people. Blame Christian nationalism since you can't say republican without saying christian first.

“Christian nationalism is often characterized as a white evangelical movement, but it would be nowhere without ultraconservative Catholics.” Christian Nationalist expert Katherine Stewart in an interview w Salon — Feb 18, 2025

My dental insurance only covers $2500 annually, but because of genetically weak teeth to get my dental issues fixed with fillings root canals, bridges and caps would cost 20k(and this is a temporary fix my teeth will fail again), full removal and dentures 10k, and if I went implants 40k

Ah, yes, it's called "Our Great Healthcare Plan," which should be a band name because it sure as hell isn't ever going to be a real program. (Not that anything Trump would propose is anything but a way to make some fool even richer.)

I'm from Australia. We don't pay an exorbitant tax bill, and yes, our politicians and country prioritise free healthcare for our lowest and highest earners. We pay the small tax bill for it as a right to belong to a free, well-managed democratic country.

Cool but unnecessary. As a monetarily sovereign currency issuer the US federal government could fully fund healthcare without raising taxes on anyone. The same way they do subsidies to the MIC, corporate donors and foreign governments who funnel money through various PACs such as AIPAC.

We pay more for our privatized Healthcare than people pay in taxes for socialized Healthcare. bUt ThE LoNg WaiTs When was the last time you tried to get an appointment with a specialist here? It took months for me to see an ortho. Got the surgery pre approved by insurance

Got the surgery. Then insurance refused to pay it and I had to fight for months. That was just a very basic, relatively inexpensive surgery. I can't imagine being seriously injured/ill and trying to fight with these bastards. Stop swallowing the BS propaganda about "best in the world."

The best part? The reason insurance denied it was bc, they won't cover the surgery if you are *only* in pain. You must also have mechanical problems with the knee. Debilitating pain? Fuck off. I suppose I'd have to hobble around and take pain pills the rest of my life. There was a billing code error

This happens to my wife all the time with our insurance. They pre-approve procedures and then deny the claims. Chronic pain, apparently, isn't a condition insurance companies take seriously.

Also the long waits in the UK are caused by extreme underfunding to try and get us privitised, and in part by outsourcing and semi-privatisation which is costing us more than just having everything in house.

Sounds familiar. That's what republicans do in the US. Make sure the government runs like shit then say: see, this is why privatized is better. And the same group of voters fall for it again and again.

Many years ago I called my Ob/Gyn to schedule an appointment. I was asked why I wanted an appointment. I said that I had a lump on my breast. I was told the nearest appointment was 6 months. Lucky for me it wasn't breast cancer.

A couple of weeks ago, we got a call to set up a neurology appointment for a first visit. (My husband has brain cancer.) The earliest in-office appointment they could give me was Nov 3. He has an aggressive brain cancer and a brain clot and we're waiting 3 months for an appointment?

Primary care too. If I need to see a doc, I can’t get my regular doc for weeks, so I end up seeing whoever else is available, and if there’s nothing soon enough, urgent care. The only time I see my primary care doc is for annual checkups scheduled way ahead.

I’ve been trying to see a a gynecologist for like a year. Had an appointment that fell right after my dad died so I rescheduled. Rescheduled again for a reason I can’t remember. Now it’ll be like November.

My income tax is around 30%. For that I got an MRI scan for a suspected tumour (negative) with a month’s wait, and my wife had cataract surgery recently. As I get paid very well and pay a lot of taxes (checks privileges), I get to contribute to helping others. Because I’m not a selfish arse.

I live in the UK. I had a blood clot. I got diagnosed on the Monday(and given blood thinners to help), and treated on the Thursday with a checkup then following Monday to make sure everything was good. Total cost to me: £12 in bus fare for the checkup(£2 each way for 3 days). The NHS is awesome.

The clinic that my longtime OBGYN is in, dropped my insurance on 1/1/25. I found out on 1/21. Started calling around and finding new providers right away. Called my current OBGYN in March. Saw her in December. That was her earliest available

My wife has an appointment with a neurologist - 8 months later. It's going to get worse because this administration anti-immigrant stance - the entire healthcare system is not going to have access to immigrant doctors and nurses especially in rural areas.

Let's not forget that our education system is also being destroyed which means that our only source of educated medical people are immigrants. We're going to be rapidly become a shadow of ourselves. Perhaps that is fine because our foreign policy sucks.

I've been screaming about that. Magas don't think higher ed is important and they don't care about how much it costs. That means only rich kids will go and just bc they're rich doesn't mean they are the brightest and the best. And we will have to import our professionals.

I believe the opportunity has to be framed differently to succeed; it’s not free, it’s no or low cost at the time of service but we all pay into it every month. It’s separate from the general accounts of government expenditures.

I seriously hope they’ve figured out how to implement it and make it work. Based on my experiences with the Social Security administration, it could be a slow process to get the care you need

AND , the extra you’d be paying in taxes would be less that what comes out of your paycheck for subpar insurance every month

The problems with this idea is that it wouldn’t be “a little bit more” in taxes; it would be significantly more. And it wouldn’t be healthcare you wouldn’t lose. It would still be subject to the whims and power grabs of politicians. Just like the Medicaid cancelations this year

“You will pay more in taxes,” is the reason that many people don’t want universal healthcare. Consider the logic. If you pay ALL your healthcare through taxes you; Will pay only what you can afford. Will NEVER go broke with medical expenses. Will NEVER have to decide between food or medicine.

Something Republicans will never say, but former insurance executives will: insurance companies can only be effective at economies of scale. That’s why 4 companies own entire market. The only competition in scale is Medicare & VA. There’s literally no reason for private health insurers.

The argument used to be that a government system would reduce the quality of care or cut thousands of insurance jobs. Now we have capitalism doing that: money funds buying hospitals and bleeding them dry, AI companies replacing all the jobs with computers. Time to remove the middle-men.

It angers me when they ask those questions, knowing full well that the additional cost in taxes for a national healthcare system is a small fraction of what is paid by employers (who then don’t have it to pay directly to you) and employees.

imagine if your doctor could manage her office with one assistant because there would only be a single insurer to deal with and submit paperwork to and no coverage fights.

Universal Healthcare has been the national college debate topic several times, as a debater, then college coach, I KNOW, because I've read years of studies and congressional testimony proving the viability and savings. Why do we keep ignoring the data?

All industrial countries have free healthcare, but the US is the only one that does NOT provide free healthcare. Something really stinks when the GOP took away women's healthcare, even in an emergency. A woman gave birth to these men!

It would certainly be less expensive than the $800 COBRA payment plus $1600 deductible costs I had last month. Since I never meet my deductible, I pay $800/month for almost nothing.

Explain it to them like they are 5 years old. Maybe they'll understand that taxing us a little bit now for having healthcare forever is a good thing. It will stop us from being afraid of leaving a bad job or an unhappy marriage.

Being a doctor and administrator who understands the system helps conextualize what universal health care means for average people.

What needs to happen is force pharmaceuticals to charge less, then lower costs trickle down! Not much can change if those two industries aren't forced to charge less because costs are outrageous! Same with government contracts, scrutinize costs. Iran proved that with much less expensive drones!

I just read a comment from Bret ‘NYT’ Stephens about how we would go bankrupt with Medicare for everyone. Oh, really? How does every other country in Europe and others pay for it? I hate him.

Ahh, let me see, could it be because it's actually cheaper than paying health insurance executives eye watering salaries? Just spitballin' here...

I really hope that Abdul El-Sayed wins the general senate election. This is going to be a very tough election for any progressive to win because of money in politics and corporate corruption. #abdulelsayed #voteforabdulelsayed #fuckdemocratestablishment #fuckmoderates

At least he's put some thought into it. "Medicare For All" really should not just use Medicare itself, which is a crap health insurance system with expensive premiums most seniors can't afford.

yeah thats the title/branding to an idea that isnt really concrete, but the title is definitely misleading: almost nobody who runs on "medicare for all" actually wants medicare for everyone. maybe they want medicaid for everyone. or universal healthcare. its vague branding that shows an intent to

sell someone on something rather than explain any actual policy. however, at this point saying "i support [catchphrase that means nothing]" is still a little better than "im not the other guy." but like just a little.

It's not much better than "my opponent sucks so vote for me." One of the first things they teach you in Linux OS advocacy is to tell people what Linux can do, not that Microsoft is terrible. Always feels weird running into metaphorical "Microsoft sucks" political arguments. 🤔

My husband spent 8 hours in a hospital, saw 7 specialists, got tests, IV medications & exams. We paid $0. In Italy, too. He's still alive. Free health care isn't worse it's just not bankrupting.

Claiming that CEOs salary adjustments are going to lower or raise healthcare costs is the surest sign that you may never be able to do even basic maths.

Medicare is a good solution. It’s just not “free” healthcare as he mentioned. Universal health insurance always comes with a cost, either in taxes, premiums, or both and Medicare costs enrollees both in taxes and premiums.

he said free at point of service. my healthcare is free at point of service - im on medi-cal, and in most cases if i go to the doctor i dont have to pay for it there because im on full service (though it does go downhill when i turn 21). i do pay about ~$80 dollars in taxes due to my lack of income

Some Americans would rather continue to pay the ridiculous amounts for insurance rather than see anyone they perceive as inferior get anything "free". Something, something "fuck you, I got mine".

Medicine has turned into a money hungry racket with drug companies charging unrealistic prices and doctors charges being unrealistic to services given.I am disgusted to see specialist who charge a level 4 office visit and all they did was do a skin survey.Being a MD, I know the difference. It's wrong
