Amazon is helping fund a $300 million build of a ballroom for the White House. Independent bookstores are donating to food banks and organizations that help with food insecurity. They are not the same.

I have avoided Amazon like the plague from the 1sr days when whats-his-face started selling books decades ago. 1 exception was something for Mom I could get elsewhere. Just the one purchase.

Andrew Carnegie, used his fortune to fund the construction of more than 1,700 public libraries in the United States and other countries, which became a cornerstone of the modern public library system. Why? A social safety net was deemed required to support his wealth. A riddle

I wish everyone would remove themselves from Amazon. Buy directly from vendors. Get your Entertainment from other sources. Support your local libraries and independent bookstores. We must stop feeding the Monster that is destroying US ! We survived just fine before Amazon. We can do it again!!!

2/2 The donation is among the largest single gifts Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, has made to a nonprofit, and the largest the Center for Disaster Philanthropy has ever received. And what has Jeff donated to???? The WH ballroom and also fired 30-40,000 employees. Go MacKenzie!

I agree w/Bernie Sanders, who has stated: "Billionaires should not exist". If uncontrolled exploitation was NOT allowed, if wages were fair, if rich guys were taxed appropriately (70% in 1980--of course, loopholes brought that lower), ETC. we'd still have rich guys, but super rich? Billionaires? No.

Get most of my reading material from the library, but occasionally from the local indie bookstore,. Not a fan of Amazon. You're right too, the local indie supports the local food bank, so I've been going there more lately

They can't afford to keep buying the chips necessary for AI. Amazon has thin margins..... it's AWS that is their money maker. If those margins shrink, wall street will bail on them. So when they needed to cut costs they decided human beings were expendable. I agree with you..just adding to you.

24% of us are illiterate & 54% read at the 6th grade level or lower. We stopped Teaching the Humanities 40 years ago & reduced education to “how much $ ya wanna make?” even at our best schools....so what are you saying?

Independent bookstores and other types of businesses ARE the backbone of our society. We can live without Amazon. Really, we can. In fact, why should any of us contribute to Jeff Bezo’s retirement fund when he doesn’t contribute to the same for his employees ??? There are options.

Lordy, just one of his wife’s boobs could pay my mortgage for over a year! Note to Bezos’ wife —Everytime you look down in admiration, think about this 85-year-old grannie with her two fantastic sons and four wonderful highly-contributing-to-the-world grands.

Yes, and I am doing my best. We must all do our best to boycott Amazon. 8 months ago I tried cold turkey. I have failed 5 times since then — purchasing items for a faraway elderly friend (I am 85 myself; but no excuse.) I need to stay cold turkey with Amazon & Target! But I will continue to try!

Amazon is building a ballroom for trump while laying off 30,000 employees before the holidays... I know its convenient shopping, but really folks...time to reevaluate that

I agree. However. Amz has bought out so many small companies that there are items it is almost impossible to find at a smaller location. And the corruption...USPS squeezed while Amz underpays delivery drivers...just one example. Clearly the "ballroom donation" is a quid pro quo.

Yup, my husband got the axe on Tuesday via text at 3 a.m. We had just moved a month ago for a “return to hub” order from Amazon. Just began to settle in and got axed less than a month from our move

While oligarchs are getting excessively rich, the lower class is agonizing . At some point, we'll just have to let the oligarchs know that without us , they are nothing. 😡🤬

He’s automating. Hope this country which hasn’t convinced Congress of the need of increased minimum wage can handle the long term effects of automation. China protected its workers. What little protection we had here is well and truly gone

It’s not just about increasing minimum wage it’s also about real benefits. Actual time off for health and rest. Healthcare that benefits people. Child care. The working class is being eaten alive.

The CEO of Amazon should be ashamed, but as one of t___p's OLIGARCHS, as someone richer than the average America, there is no shame, only a sense of superiority...while AMERICA'S MEN, WOMEN, AND CHLDREN, go hungry, thanks to the G(ang) O(f) P(utin)...

Publicly traded corporations are required to do everything in their power to maximize profits for their shareholders, which means they will never donate money unless it helps their bottom line, either by helping them evade taxes, or in this case, by gaining favor with a narcissistic leader.

Is there a book on making bulk meals cheaply? Or do I need to write it? It would be a handy thing for soup kitchens to have, and families on a tight budget. I know Martha Stewart was talking about writing it. Did she?

I'll never buy anything on Amazon ever again. In fact I've been doing that for 6 years now. It's really not that hard and almost always you can find what you are looking for at the same price, hell sometimes even lower. But even if it's a few bucks more.

A few years ago I went to buy a book. I didn't want to go thru Amazon so I found a little mom & pop bookstore and ordered it from them, instead. Sure it cost twice as much, but it was worth it. When I opened it up, inside their box was a smaller box from Amazon.

had a situation where Amazon sent the wrong item when I asked to have it replaced by the item I had paid for, I was told they merely distributed -- the seller sent them the item they sent me, so they had no responsibility
