You could and should have stopped with the first paragraph, Mayor. There's 364 other days of the year when you could have condemned Israel's response to this atrocity. But this is like commemorating the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks by lecturing us about our invasion of Iraq.

I wouldn't have an issue with a commemoration of 9/11 including an acknowledgement of the crimes committed by the US gov that were a result of 9/11 Honestly addressing one without the other gives a false impression that there is such a thing as actions without consequences

Nah, there is no bad day to point out the atrocities committed by our government as a response to 9/11. Our government used thousands of US victims and dishonored them by committing countless war crimes in their name. Netanyahu is doing the same today.

Israel has killed an order of magnitude more Palestinian children than the total number of Israelis who were killed (both by Hamas and the Israeli government, by the way) on Oct. 7. And, Israelis murdering Palestinians is still ongoing! So maybe, just maybe, know your place and be quiet.

Israel has been killing, forcefully removing, and torturing Palestinians for a century, and most Israelis are complicit in this. Yes, October 7th was a terrible tragedy that killed a lot of innocent people, but Israel deserves no sympathy for an attack in a war that they started.

This is what I spend every 9/11 doing because what we did in Afghanistan and Iraq is an atrocity so many orders of magnitude worse than 9/11. Also 9/11 was perpetrated in response to unchecked imperialism that has only gotten worse since, showing that America learned nothing and needs the lecture.

AYFK. You all seem unable to distinguish between ann initial decision to go in vs outcomes so this conversation would be a waste. Yes, he was in Afghanistan and participated in training Al Qaeda. Yes, he moved after the invasion. Yes, the Afghanistan war was a shitshow.

Was spending billions going into Afghanistan, killing innocents and American soldiers, to end the taliban... But only succeeding in creating a stronger better weaponised Taliban wrong . 🤔. YES.

There’s a big difference between the decision to attack the Taliban, Al Qaeda in retaliation and the 20 years of bullshit that followed. When it went sideways, they should’ve left. But the initial decision was justified. To get back to the original topic, Mamdani is a bitch for not calling that out

You do realize it's fairly comment knowledge Netanyahu knew of the attack in advance? Even Charlie Kirk believed that. There was video circulating of an IDF soldier testifying the the Knesset about a stand down. This attack was allowed to further Israeli Lebensraum

And? So what? Bush was famously/infamously warned about 9/11 as well, but you didn't hear any official, including Mamdani, talk about that on the anniversary of the attack. Netanyahu is a piece of shit who should be in prison. That's irrelevant to my point.

I have no doubt 9/11 was allowed to happen at the very least. It was the "Pearl Harbor" event Wolfowitz said was needed to further the PNAC/neocon agenda. Which is securing Israeli and its hegemony in the middle east.

...which still doesn't change the fact that not a single official talks about any of that during/around the 9/11 anniversary or ceremonies because it would be in incredibly poor taste and offensive to the families/loved ones of the victims. There's 364 other days per year to do so.

"commemorating the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks by lecturing us about our invasion of Iraq" To be fair, DSA-niks often both-sides 9/11 too, typically by blaming "US imperialism" for the Al Qaeda attacks. I imagine repeating that trope on 9/11/26 was too risky even for Mamdani.

I was wrong about the kibbutz being on illegal territory. But uh you are wrong about Gaza not being occupied after 2005😬 "In 2005, Israel unilaterally disengaged from the Gaza Strip, but the International Court of Justice,[2] the UN General Assembly,[3] and the UN Security Council continue to

Living in NYC, I have had so many thoughts about 9/11, especially on/around each anniversary. We still grieve and remember about how that grief was exploited. How cynics abused our grief to divide the country, to demonize, silence, torture, kill. We’re still holding back 25 years later.

Why should he have to stop because of what he said hurts your feelings? Why shouldnt he remind the world that what's happening right now is because the US continues to enable it and we allow them to? And btw, yeah we did deserve 9/11 because of our presence in the Middle East...

Stopping at the first paragraph would be like mentioning 9/11 without acknowledging the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. The story wouldn't be complete.

Both the 9/11 terror attacks and the Bush wars led to innocent civilians dying. Since one was the direct cause of the other, I see no reason not to remember both on the same day. We already do something similar with Black Monday and The Great Depression.

That’s the norm. I’ve never heard a memorial ceremony of 9/11 that spends any much less 2/3s of the time on the wars on the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

No it’s a perfect time to blame Nutinyahoo for all of this terrorism! HE KNEW!! Where is the Israeli outrage for their people that he let them be martyred

Unfortunately, Hamas doesn't have bases in Gaza, they operate within residential areas and tunnels. I sympathize with the Gazan civilians who were caught in the middle. But going into Gaza after the hostages was justified.

It’s really worse than that, Charles. Mamdani’s intent isn’t to teach or even lecture. He’s deliberately inciting hate by rewriting history. The real history, the real problem, is genocidal Arab aggression against Jews, which he is carrying to the city he took an oath to protect.
