there's been a surge in support for the death penalty again, but people forget that we're not against the death penalty because we think evil people don't deserve to die, we're against it because the government having the power to kill someone they deem guilty can be abused by whoever is in power

that's the problem with democracy, the reason for the death penalty could change at any given time if enough lawmakers are elected to make such a change. there is never a safe moment. you always have to worry about who will be elected next and what they will do once they're in power

It’s a stretch to say it’s democracy’s fault. The system allows for change. Strengthening laws and basic human rights in the constitution needs to happen so one extreme or the other can’t effect them. This includes women’s rights.

It's only the charlatans who want to bring it back because it panders those who want simple sounding solutions like Brexit. They're good reasons why we got rid of it. Mistakes were made, appeals are very costly. And also some jurors don't want to feel responsible for another person's death.

Create me a perfect criminal justice system which CANNOT make mistakes nor be manipulated or weaponised and we can then talk about introducing the power to make such permanent decisions. Until then nope, not for me

The people in power that would abuse it are counting on that penalty not being used in defense against the power they wield. They would be more traumatized than us if it were, having been reminded that no one is exempt from that experience. We are being reminded daily.

yep, i recently explained this to one of my younger maga brothers.. i WANT the government and laws to be the brakes on ending another's life.. the "rule of laws" maga crowd do not believe in rule of law.. they're nothing but a bunch of overgrown south park's cartmans.. "respect my authoritaayyyy..🤮

That’s the problem with the U.S., afraid of your own government and so have got the 2A in case you have to kill each other. The issue with the death penalty is that government shouldn’t execute people. Should be banned as cruel and unusual punishment, not paranoia of it being turned against you.

Obviously, state-sponsored murder does not work as a deterrent, as we have some of the highest murder and prison population numbers in the world. "Do what we say, not what we do" does not work for ten-year-olds either.

Also the fact that we're constantly wrongly convicting people. And giving harsher sentences to minorities. And it does nothing to deter crime.

All of these reasons. Also "in for a penny" ie having killed once a murderer has no reason not to kill again to evade justice, and the "see, violence is sometimes justified" message that can encourage violent offenders not deter them.

The problem I have with the death penalty is that our system for judging these people that are being executed is flawed and innocent people are being punished. Going to jury duty has shown me that I would not want my life to be dependant on a jury. Many of the jurors are unfit to serve as jurors.

Actually I think even most evil people deserve to live, there are very few I would consider irredeemable. The moment you start putting people in a 'deserves to die' camp you start devaluing humanity and start down a dark path.

With the way the country is now, we either get a death penalty, or a life-long sentence in prison that is basically a death penalty. Removing the death penalty in our system is not a win, it is a drain. We need a reform that works toward the Nordic system.

I don’t think evil people should be put to death by other people. It’s not our call. It’s as uncivilized as many forms of surrender to primal urges. Time to evolve.

That’s why the death penalty should be abolished. Maybe if every corrupt member of the current administration, their accomplices in the house and Senate , and their oligarch owners were to suffer by such an unthinkable abuse of power in 3-4 years, the will to ban it would finally be found.

The death penalty taints the souls of everyone involved: the judge, the jury, the law enforcement officers, the prison officials, the executioners…. It is an expanding wave of evil that hurts everyone it touches. That’s why it’s bad.

Nah, evil people don't deserve to die. No one does. It's the responsibility of the state to ensure that justice is not merely vengeance, or even reciprocity.

I am against it for 2 simple reasons. If you have a system of morality that says it is wrong to kill people, then the government should stand by this. Also if a person is falsely convicted you cannot re-alive them.

a death penalty to remove from society those we deem too dangerous to live, would presuppose a system whereby only those clearly guilty of violence and deemed still dangerous would be executed. Instead, we have a system in which the fact of sentencing is the rationale for the state to murder.

The pardon power needs reform. In Canada technically the Governor General (or governor, for provincial jurisdiction) can grant it on the PM's advice using the royal prerogative but he doesn't since the process is legally regulated through the parole board.

When controlling for all Factors, it falls disproportionately upon POC. And we have knowingly executed leil who were not guilty. It does not act as a deterrence. It is a scourge.

and also courts like to disproportionately sentence minorities and also so many innocent people are convicted there's a whole ass org working cases 24/7/365. they've assisted or won the release of 20 individuals from death row (out of over 250 total DNA-based exonerations nationwide).

The fundamental problem with the death penalty is that “the state” doesn’t kill people, real people kill people. We, as a society, put these people’s mortal souls at risk for the spurious purpose of vengeance.

We have a problem where we have people who repeat multiple violent crimes and are not taken off the streets. We need the death penalty for those mentally competent. For those that are crazy but refuse treatment we need mental institutes. Don’t let the wolves walk free to dine on the sheep.

The death penalty seeming even more terrifying after obamas attorney general successfully argued in court that due process doesnt necessarily mean judicial process. Especially since that was about targeted execution of an american citizen and his child abroad.

Woah, woah, I am *absolutely* against the death penalty because I don't think people deserve to die. ANYONE having control over death is bad and should be rejected on ethical grounds at all turns. Doctors are morally bound to keep you alive, civilisation's goal should be to preserve life.

i have heard that god said an eye for an eye, right? if god wanted those people to die, isn't got powerful enough to take care of it? once the bad person is controled, it becomes murder for a murder?

My sister was a sociology professor. She used to say it costs more to execute someone than to keep them in jail for life. Why? Because so many death-row cases get appealed all the way up to SCOTUS, and the lawyers' fees cost the taxpayer a freaking fortune.

The state doesn't have the right to kill. Start from there. Then there's the built-in racial bias, innocent people convicted, & class divide regarding who prosecutors seek the death penalty for. Many people may deserve it. The point of a civilized society is to curb the blood lust, not yield to it.

And some of us believe both. Along with my concerns about political abuse, I also believe that no human has the right to determine the time of death of another unless in immediate self defense. This is the essence of what makes murder wrong in the first place.

I am against it as I think it is too kind to murderers. Let them rot in jail for the rest of their lives. The UK is guilty of executing a mentally incapacitated man (Derek Bentley) for the death of a police officer when the police knew it was his under-age companion who did it (unintentionally).

Certain people need to be locked alone in a 7x12 cell for life and never allowed to see the sky again, and I think the death penalty would let them off too easy. For everybody else, prison should be rehabilitative not punitive b/c our society is actually incredibly dysfunctional.

I'm against the death penalty because too many innocent people have been released from long prison sentences for crimes they didn't commit. You can't bring an innocent person back from dead.

Anyone that is against the death penalty should spend a few weeks in solitary. I've done it. My opinion is informed. Charles Manson was held in solitary for DECADES. It's inhumane punishment. International courts have said so. Jeff Dahmer, John Gacy, there is just one humane solution. #Death

Lots of good arguments against the death penalty. The one I think merits it is presidential pardon power. Nobody can be pardoned out of a cemetery. Those child rapers currently in power should NEVER be able to walk free. The only way to 100% ensure that is death.

I'm against the death penalty for those reasons. I am only for the death penalty if it immediately prevents more people from dying or suffering. Therefore, deterring conservative elites from raping children and killing more people via a controlled death penalty is warranted.

There are so many examples of how fallible our justice system can be. Even juries are wrong sometimes. I can't in good conscience send someone to their death knowing that I might have been given false information.

That aside, I resent the fact that a deranged worthless POS like Levy is left alive and incarcerated at enormous expense for up to say 50 years whilst many of us keep our fingers Xd that another inmate will do the job the Government shrinks from !!

Not to mention the USA showed us what a shitshow that is. How many innocent people have been killed, especially those of colour?

I'm against the death penalty because redemption is possible. I've met multiple people convicted of murder who lead productive lives. One man I know supports four children, his wife, his mother and her parents.

There's only one country that not only has several methods of execution but leaves people on death row for many years until their appeal time runs out: that is the USA. No country in the free civilised world kills anyone anymore, it's evil and barbaric.

This regime is already doing it, bombing boats in South America with purported drug smugglers, without evidence. And even with evidence, it's WRONG.

Getting rid of the ECHR & Kemi & Chris or NF, BJ & “Lord” Yusuf (nobody would vote for him) will be performatively volunteering to pull the levers themselves We’ll have multiple executions as half time entertainment

Methodology has always been a tertiary issue frequently consisdered during death penalty debates. Today one favored method for terminating lives not valued by MAGA and the Trump administration is street shootings freely administered by ICE as a fatal suspension of the rule of law.

1. It doesn't stop crime. No one has ever not murdered someone because of the threat. 2. No promise an innocent person won't die, can't be trusted. 3. Government should never be the arbiter of life. 4. It is just is revenge, which is wrong.

Capital punishment 1-Is not a deterrent If it was it would not need to be applied more than once 2-Does not alter the past 3-Is a primitive practice The Greeks used it ONLY because they couldn't long term house 4-Is arbitrary The Brits used to kill pick pockets 5-The legal system is imperfect

It's funny that the people who think holding people accountable in the most extreme way possible (killing them) is the right thing to do to curb crime are the same folks rewarding criminal behavior in politicians.

It's also irreversible and it's used disproportionately against poor people and people of color. So it needs to go. But, no, I don't have a problem with executing someone who's committed a heinous crime and is guilty beyond the shadow of a doubt.

Trump is a great example of how the stupidest person alive might be in charge of justice & they may lie & try to have the DOJ arrest an Olympian & falsely accuse him of treason or of ruining a pond & the next thing you know an innocent man is dead because a moron ruined his own reflecting pond.

That’s true and Iran is the perfect case in point. The US does NOT want to become Iran. Israel still does not have an established death penalty after all of these years. Just saying. I recognize the danger in the current US trends, though.

I used to be a believer until I realized our judicial system is so fucked up. Far too many innocent people get put away for years and we know that so how the fuck can we support the death penalty?

Not to mention the expense of the death penalty when you consider all the appeals, etc. in California we put people on death row, spend money on appeals and let them die of old age in prison anyways. So we have it both ways. Yay for us 🤦‍♀️

People who support the death penalty often say why should we pay for a guilty person to live in prison their whole life. With the appeals process, the death penalty verdict is actually more expensive.

I’m against it because the justice system is deeply flawed and innocent people have most certainly been executed. Plus, it’s even more expensive than life in prison. Government should not be in the execution business.
