The guy who opened fire at Comet Pizza because he'd cooked his brain online and believed they were a child sex trafficking hub was exactly as confident the people he was aiming at deserved it as Luigi Mangione, which is just one reason it's a bad idea to lionise vigilante murder.

Cool, so as long as we can trust all of our fellow citizens to be right on the merits each and every time, we should encourage vigilante executions.

Wild that you're acting like people would prefer enacting vigilante justice over a better alternative that just happens to not grossly enrich the wealth class. Universal single payer is the solution, but ofc leaving people with no alternative will drive them to find one bsky.app/profile/jent...

“A single-payer universal health care system could cover every American, save more than 100,000 lives a year, and still cost $1 trillion less than the system it would replace, according to a new preprint study led by researchers at the Yale School of Public Health.” ysph.yale.edu/news-article...

the past few decades have been spent trying to get things done the right way, but trillions of dollars of lobbyist dark money later and we're still at square one. there was a more peaceful solution this whole time, and that solution remains popular. but some ppl will inevitably get sick of waiting.

also, the dude who went to comet ping pong did absolutely nothing to impact the child trafficking rings he was looking to disrupt. the person who shot the insurance executive motivated a surge of panicked approvals of insurance claims from companies that are famous for rejecting even valid claims.

It's a terrible shame that it took vigilante murder for the national conversation about crooked health insurance companies in the US to start in earnest. But it also had to reach that point, and it wasn't out of nowhere. Changes are needed...and as of now, it's any port in a storm.

The encouragement to shoot Thompson came from Thompson himself, from his intensely foul and life destroying actions. He didn’t die because we glorify shooting people but because he caused millions of bitter tears at the funerals of real human beings who suffered and died so Brian could live fancy.

This would be an effective argument if a) we had encouraged Luigi (no one did, so far as anyone knows) and b) anyone was encouraging people to RANDOMLY engage in vigilantism. Neither is actually happening, which is why your argument is so fucking silly.

Instead, people are exculpating a vigilante that killed a guy for a reason many people think is entirely reasonable -- he made his living off the intentional infliction of misery on other human beings. You could at least attempt being honest about what's happening.

Yes. If the folk doing the executing are doing so for good reasons upon absolutely irredeemable folk then I'm going to consider that kind of justice of the oppressed valid as all hell. And that is going to become more of a norm with the way things are going in this dystopia.

encourage? no. But in extremis, we also literally would not have a country celebrating its 250th if there were no circumstances whatsoever where the merits adequately justified violence. So the merits have to count for something somewhere.

Where the threshold differs for different people but take J6, for example: It was bad mainly because it was both concocted in bad faith and wrong on the merits, and NOT necessarily because their actions were intrinsically unjustified even in the case of an actual stolen election.

That ceo was a danger to the public though, known drunk driver endangering innocent people, we still dont know what drugs were in that ceo when he got blasted

It would be great if the political and judical systems actually protected the vulnerable and held power to account, but that is not the world we live in and that goes double for the US. Vigilantism is going to be the side effect of the "pragmatic" sacrifices made to protect the Economy™️.

We live in a country that encourages people like Brian Thompson to execute dozens of people a day because it's profitable. Maybe save your outrage for that.

Or we could properly tax rich people, do less corruption (corporate lobbying) and do universal healthcare so that people like Brian Thompson wouldn’t be in a position to exploit risk pools.

I suspect fewer people are glamorozing vigilante assassination as are propping up the murderous insurance system that kills even more people, so what are we doing here? Why are you wasting your energy on the people who are morally right and probably won't commit the crime over the active killers?

You're currently trusting those who have a vested interest in ensuring that their buddies, coworkers, and often even themselves, never face any accountability, to be the sole legitimate entity allowed to deal out accountability and decide who faces it much better than people who are wrong sometimes

Why are you commenting on this issue when you live in a country with socialized medicine? Seems like you’re completely disconnected from the healthcare system in the US but really think that we need your opinion.

Well, this is a completely disingenuous response. Are you always this obsequious to the insurance executives unaliving our fellow citizens for profit or are you paid extra when you do it?

You made an imbecilic category error, were corrected, and jumped to an absurd position no one holds in order to save face. You did this because you are feckless, privileged, and lacking in a moral system. You're also a slimy ballbag.
