I FIRMLY believe the doodle trend can be laid largely at the feet of straight husbands who refused to get an *actual standard poodle* because “they’re dogs for girls.”

actually, the #1 minor thing I'm a huge snob about..... doodle-type dogs sorry, folks, i have to say my truth and my truth is that I file "knowingly obtaining a mini-merle-phantom-bernedoodle" away in my head with "people who only vacation at Disney World"

A very useful book I consulted years ago classified certain breeds as “unsuitable for first-time owners,”usually because they were smart, potentially aggressive guard dogs. We took that seriously and got Basset Hounds: not Einsteins, and docile.

Don't be too hard on us Doodle owners. My wife was allergic to so many other breeds. We adopted from a shelter of course, like all our pets, but not-all-Doodle owners go into it looking for a designer pup. One thing about them being so popular is that there are a lot in shelters needing a good home!

my sisters-in-law both got goldendoodles because they were supposed to be smaller than standard poodles, but only one of them worked out that way and the other one is just a standard poodle who happens to be a gorgeous golden brown

I dated a guy who owned a poodle and was from a family of poodle people (apparently due to allergies). I saw them in a completely different light. My ex had a mini, who was a sweet, smart, spunky little dog. Not yappy at all. His relatives' standard poodles were sporty, athletic dogs.

(I've met lots of nice doodles too. But the prices charged for them are ridiculous, and they're not as predictable as people want them to be. I suspect a lot of the same people would be happy with a poodle as well.)

The ONLY good thing I can say about the Doodle craze is that I'm seeing folks who bought Doodles turn around and buy Poodles next when they realize all the things they like about Doodles is mostly a Poodle thing and Poodles can actually be purchased from ethical, quality breeders.

Their general reputation nowadays is very much “highly unlikely to bite” (which is why they’re pretty useless working dogs but great pets)

Our rough collie was extremely easy to train to be a family pet and quite low energy, which is what they’re known for nowadays. Super different from border collies, which are still very much a working breed.

I dunno, I know this is all super anecdotal but every person I’ve ever met who wanted a doodle was a real standard white-lady-instagram type. I always figured it was like… people taking a very shallow superficial understanding of the “mutts are healthier than purebred”thing plus SocMed Influencing

I mean, again all anecdotal, but in my experience the men around those women think the doodles are just as girly as the poodles, most of the super basic dudes I’ve met want either a Shepherd or a Husky

But I guess it’s possible they figure if they have to get the “girly” dog the doodle has less “snob” stereotypes attached to it? Haha I’ve just never personally met a dude who expressed strong opinions about poodles and not doodles (granted, I’m not the one buying a dog with them)

Like, people who act like it would be “elitist” to get a poodle and give you a speech about purebred dog being unhealthy, then turn around and spend $5000 on a trendy backyard puppy mill mutt

My experience is that they're "known" as having the benefits of poodles' allergy-friendliness, which does attract a particular venn diagram of middle class health-conscious person x the type of person that thinks you can mix and match traits in a dog like a build-a-bra

I need a hypoallergenic dog, so I would consider one of these, but I will buy a dog, so I am keeping my eyes on the shelters for options.

Can confirm, dad thinks poodles are too girly and got a cockapoo (also brought home with no warning and I ended up having to raise her). He learned quick, she seized and nearly died within 24 hours of bringing her home. She's ok now but I've put my foot down. Ethical breeders only.

I have a different theory (from first hand experience): there’s a pyramid industry in breeding them, then selling the females to first-time would-be breeders. It’s all very white lady instagram. Doodle people are almost exclusively first time dog owners.

I'd say it's because the people who heard about the first guy doing it /carefully/ decided they could sell mutts for thousands along with a bill of goods that resemble a bridge in a swamp. And the dog-ignorant bought those swampy bridges in droves.

And doodle mutts are high-maintenance dogs! My FIL got a golden doodle from a backyard breeder and that dog is unhinged. He refused to train her and she jumps on and nips visitors relentlessly. I had to sit on my hands to hide them from her the last time I visited. 😩

My wife tells me doodles often have weird personality issues, because poodles are bred to act independently, but then they're crossbred with other breeds that are bred to wait for instructions from humans.

Idk if it’s that so much - poodles are also a hunting breed that perform extremely well in competitive obedience - but I have heard a lot of it is because most all doodle breeders use low-quality poodles + low quality specimens of other breeds because good breeders won’t sell to them

It's that poodles are not considered a "biddable" dog & are capable of making their own decisions even if they follow directions from humans, whereas a lot of retrievers like goldens & labs are "biddable" and they really don't want to make their own decisions.

they don’t shed and generally understand to be gentler with kids. aside from status that’s the main draw in brooklyn david frigging cross even has a doodle now

Meanwhile anybody who's actually met a standard poodle can tell you that they are wicked smart and territorial as hell which is exactly what that sort of person would want in a dog.

My family fostered poodles growing up and even the small ones get ridiculously territorial! We adopted one of our fosters (she was VERY OBVIOUSLY My Mom's Dog from like, minute one) and we ended up having to stop fostering because she WOULD NOT tolerate other dogs being near Her Person

After years in the dog industry, I can say that the "they're hypoallergenic" thing is a big part of it too, along with Dude Approval. Doodles are a way to nostalgically get your childhood dog (a lab, a golden) AND feel clean / pure.

Sounds like something someone who has never met an actual poodle would say. Toy poodles, sure, but those aren't the same thing any more than a "doodle dog" is. And no self-styled manly man wants a dog with doodle in its name.

Standard poodles are awesome dogs. And they look cooler than Doodles. Hell, they were bred as hunting dogs and some of the top field trial dogs in the world are poodles. (And my very good girl is about to cross the rainbow bridge.)

Or bougie crossbreeders dumping undesirable puppies. This is my rescue Coby and we think he was a breeder dump. He was rescued from a kill shelter in TX and brought to Long Island. I've had him for a month and a half now. DNA test is on the way. Not sure if he's poodle or doodle.

My dog is incredibly friendly and wants to jump on every single human on the planet (he's 10 pounds, by the way). I realize not every person likes dogs, so I always restrain him and ask if it's okay for him to come up and say hi. Why doesn't everyone do this with their dog?

I'm allergic to dog dander. A freshly washed dog is usually fine! A dog that's run/rolled in grass pollen or flower/shrub/tree pollen just brings those allergens with them.

As a dog owner - not ok, allergic or not owners need to control dogs, people have genuine fear or dislike - which is fair enough. I like dogs but not jumping at me. Ditto cats or other animals though tbf.

My parents inherited my grandmother’s moyen poodle (when she got him this was the potential plan) and can even have a shaggier looking poodle by grooming alone (my mom had trouble finding a groomer and discovered it’s pretty easy to do it yourself).
