personally, I believe that it’s highly disrespectful to animals to believe that they’re all naturally pure and good-hearted. I believe that individual animals are just like people, in that some of them are naturally inclined to be cool and some of them are naturally inclined to be complete assholes

I saw a post where someone was asking about seeing a solitary horse outside. And they answered Qs, the other horses had company, everyone looked well looked after, and people went "Yeah, he's just a dickhead", with stories of horses they'd known who just could not have/did not want company.

Not just pets ..we have owned some brilliant livestock, truly lovable and smart but mmm there are definitely some dicks.

This discussion gets really messy really fast though because some of the relevant behavioral tendencies are correlated with breed traits, but not reducible to them — and not usually the ones people think (which are entangled in racist, classist stereoypes about their humans).

People who claim that pointing out some breeds have more aggressive traits than others is the same as being racist against humans are absolute trash

we’ve all known people who had dogs and cats who have experienced 100% trauma-free and loving lives who are still just complete bastards. we also all know people who are the same way.

animals are complicated individuals who desire respect and consideration, and that means accepting that some individual animals just have toxic vibes/are bad to be around

Have had many; rehabbed quite a few abused that turned violent. & yeah, some are just assholes (especially true of roosters). But the absolute worst horse/goat/dog/cat/llama/pig/bear/fisher cat/lizard/snake I’ve ever encountered was still far easier to deal with than your average human dickhead.

My grandma had a horrid little dog that hated everyone but her 100% of the time and hated her about half the time. Her third husband, before they got married, told her, "It's me or the dog." She got rid of the dog without a second thought and everyone was glad of it.

Does dolls cat knock things over because shes understimulated? No shes got more toys and stuff to do than a spoiled child. Dolls cat is just a villian.

There are people who feel indignant when someone adopts a pet and then returns it when the relationship doesn't work — as if animals didn't have personalities and characters somewhat like people do, as if forcing incompatible creatures isn't cruelty.

I love orcas, and one of the reasons I like them is that they’re smart enough to have separate languages and cultures, several of which appear to have developed racism

Let me just take this opportunity to name and shame some asshole animals: Stella (giant Gambian pouched rat): asshole. Yao Guai (parrot): asshole. Mr. Shavy (rat): asshole. Peppercorn (horse): double asshole.

I didn't! It was a foster parrot--I was just taking care of it till a real home was found. But I suppose I DID volunteer... (The most bird I can handle on a permanent basis is a budgie.)

Sometimes when I see scraggly looking pigeon next a well groomed one I assume the former is just lazy and unkempt or maybe depressed and just not showing up today.

Mine didn't. He'd come out and be the most friendly adorable cat in existence and the moment the guests back was turned dig his nails into my calf or scratch some not visible part of my body. Then go back to being cuddly to the guest. Absolute asshole. Still miss him though.

It does seem like there’s been an uptick in people bringing their asshole dogs to public places. It’s starting to turn me against dogs in public, I don’t love that but too many people are selfish and don’t care about other people. If your dog’s going to snap at children don’t take it to restaurants.

I always blamed it on too many pet owners over-humanizing dogs and acting like criticizing their dog’s behavior was tantamount to criticizing their children. But you’re right post-Covid was when it got really noticeable. Yet another example of how covid wrecked our ability to live with one another.

Characterizing any community, nation or species by its best or worst individuals is bias. But recognising they may share a biology or culture which shapes their behaviour towards or away from a given set of values is not…

I slept in the open in the Amazon once. The bugs were OK, but the incredible cacophony of creatures kept me up all night. Then I realized they made all that noise because they were all either trying to screw each other or eat each other.😳

One time I was taking a nap at my parents house and the cat was next to me, and she just reached over and clawed me in the leg for shits and giggles. She was a good cat 99% of the time. I had a great relationship with her. But every once in a while, the evil would take control.
