i see why steam tries very very hard to hide the curator system from everyone because it gives a direct, horrifying look at the demographics actively using steam's community features

it is my strong opinion that (especially large) platforms like steam which have no desire to moderate online spaces should simply not introduce social features to their platform. it is a marketplace, it doesn't have to be "the everything platform".

Gabe Newell is like Gamer Jesus even though (or maybe because) he hosts the place where ISIS and the far right recruited people and laundered their viewpoints .

When the new Shinobi came out, I ran into a bug that prevented me from progressing the game. Looked at the foruns to see if anyone found a way to fix it. The very first post I saw was asking if the new Shinobi was woke. Dude so scared of women that he had to ask before playing the ninja platformer.

For similar reasons I'm sort of surprised the steam forums still exist. They do great damage to the human spirit for no benefit.

Capcom is so fucking lucky that Pragmata was unexpectedly a massive hit game and got a lot of normal people actually playing it because hoo boy do NOT under any circumstances look at that game's community from before it came out and sold gangbusters

anyone typing "cute and funny" into a review box should automatically have their browser history emailed to a local authority

aww, the relationship in pragmata is very, almost sickly, sweet. hugh goes adoptive father mode immediately. if that's the only reason i wouldn't let them get you down!

every steam workshop is filled with nothing but single-digit aged children doing roflcopter copypastas and every steam forum is filled with nothing but a far right harassment hub spawned from debates on whether "Mostly Positive" is still positive.

what do you mean i find it super insightful when a bunch of circlejerking russians are whinging about wokeness, degeneracy, and mental illness because something incredibly minor offended their fragile sensibilities. and if you don't get that you just get outright 4chan posting

Valve could hire 1000 moderators to work 3 hours a day and also pay for the therapy they'd need at the end of the week and their bottom line would barely move a micron but instead the cesspool must fester. Godlord Gaben must buy another yacht. r/steam must jerk harder.

Yeah Steam is falling victim to the Nazi bar allegory. They have let the bad actors fester, grow and spread. The normal people are starting to notice the comments and discussion pages filled with it now.

Hurts me coz I've subbed to niche curators (shmups, blobbers, wuxia) that give decent reviews. Some give useful info. - Games Risk Of Removal = delisting warnings and dates - cut content = either unfinished PC ports, adult games needing patches, or remasters that remove stuff

i was literally looking for any new shmup curators because the two most reliable ones haven't updated in months and actual shmups are literally impossible to find in the algorithm

Same here. Lot of good ones died around 2021-23 (around the time Steam started to deprioritize Curators feature). Very few good ones left.

Wouldn't be such a problem if Valve actually did even the slightest amount of moderation. But that would be too difficult, and the internet's favorite billionaire can't have his reputation tarnished.

Idk I adore having stuff like trading cards and badges and a level to display, and there's a few good curators I like, but yeah a large part of the people on them are absolute out of touch shut ins and that's the part that makes me not wanna interact more on the forums lol

Like there's an AI detector curator that goes further than the AI disclosure and writes about how specific games use it rather than having to rely on how the publishers say they use it.

I’m a big fan of the one that recommends games based off whether or not one of the devs said anything about charlie kirk. It’s so funny to think that people cared about this for like a few months before he became the definitive laughing stock on the internet

they’re saying the woke femoid mind cancer is in the gears of war game that is a 200 million dollar apology for putting a woman in the last one???

it's so funny they managed to do what 343 couldn't with halo--make an actual interesting sequel with a compelling direction for future entries then they spent half a decade avoiding any sort of progress or conclusion

they've won a 100% cultural victory but have instead decided to pretend they live in an invented fantasy alternate reality where they're losers and transgender communists run the world?

they're mad because they've won a 100% cultural victory but their politics still isn't seen as cool or stylish or rebellious or alternative, and it drives them nuts. Its the Cruel Kids Table but for midwestern chuds who think wearing a MAGA hat made them edgy.

i was legitimately shocked to wander into the Dragon Quest 3 2DHD community forum when that game was new to find that literally all anyone wanted to talk about was "censorship" (the female hero's tiny sprite had its breast size reduced) "wokeness" (type a/b bodies instead of male/female)

You’re joking but I really do think these are people with personal lives so pathetic and devoid of purpose that the only way to cope is to pretend like evil wokes are the reason they’re not successful

Looking at the most fascist game series on a major platform of all time to the point you could tell me footage of it is from the Pete Hegseth reboot of America’s Army and I’d probably believe you: I can’t believe it’s gone woke

Gears is kinda like 40k in the sense that it is full of fascist imagery and narratives, but it's also constantly beating you over the head that this society would fucking suck ass to live in So I'd say that it is very much not fascist, but it def can appear that way

It’s hilarious to me when they praise Left 4 Dead and its sequel for “not being woke.” They do see that the first game has a woman who’s dressed sensibly and a black man, right? And the second game not only has a black man, but a black woman?

The funniest/saddest one of those "woke detector" type curators i could find was one that looked for devs Charlie Kirk tweets. Insanely useful feature held hostage by psychos.

The FLOOD of emails I got when I released my game asking for steam keys from the wildest groups of people was genuinely insane

probably not a good thing that the second most popular curator group is "sweet baby inc detected", a thing that literally means nothing for the final product and whose only purpose is to promote harassment. why are these things not reportable, exactly???

because people glaze valve and love to ignore that they are, despite making good games, ultimately a techno libertarian company so it's "anything goes" in terms of moderation of any kind
