i do think that’s where a lot of the obvious resentment for the userbase comes from. 90% of us on here doesn’t really care about the primary reason why this place exists but use his place out of sheer convenience

it remains really funny that this site was spun up to be a crypto/rationalist platform and then old time weird twitter people and others started moving over here in spring 2023 and ever since management has been mad they're successful but not in the way they wanted

Jay, as a gullible liberal, listens to bad-faith critics of Bluesky that scapegoat the user base of the site. She fears that Trump will ban Bluesky, and has been trying to appease them, and thinks the only thing that will save Bluesky is decentralization. But she's trying the equivalent of tarriffs

Tariffs, do not establish new supply chains or infrastructure needed to build local industry. Similarly, Bluesky Social has done little towards making it easy to decentralize (it's hopelessly complex), and have lost their minds at other techies pointing out Mastodon/ActivityPub is more decentralized

This place was a libertarian scheme to avoid having to actually moderate Twitter, and its ideological stupidity is baked into the protocol. Theyre gonna keep fleecing VCs until people realize it is hobbled on a fundamental level

they did offer up this place as an alternative to twitter and that's what everyone ran with when this place went mainstream, and they just kept their mouths shut and waited for enough people to show up so they could what... trick them into using something no one wants? why not just change plans?

Yeah but contrast this site with Twitter, and it’s no contest which of the 2 is the supreme hellsite. It’s not even remotely close. We can’t even post that Charlie Kirk was a bigot on Twitter without getting threats

It is incredibly ironic. Fediverse decentralization works but you wish it didn’t, and Bluesky decentralization doesn’t work while Bluesky developers try to pretend it does to avoid being accountable for running a centralized service.

I feel like they've probably justified it to themselves as speeding up adoption of atproto and gradually shrugging off the burden of moderating a centralized host, which they only began out of necessity Like it's absolutely personal petty bullshit but this line of thought makes it easier on them

Rather than adapt and take advantage of the userbase they have, they will continue to mald and whine about the userbase they want. This is proof that the BlueSky team is composed largely of incompetent losers not cut out for social media.

what is the realistic way forward, though? like we can't just let bygones be bygones if they're going to exercise arbitrary banning of whoever, it's fucking chaos then. how do we actually get jay and whoever else out of here so we can go back to normal

Best case, stuff like Blacksky and Northsky get up and running to the point where Bluesky itself can be fully ignored. Right now, Bluesky has the ability to ban people, and that ripples out to the other services. But it should, in theory, be possible to set up enough of ATProto to fully do a schism.

I mean, actual best case is Jay and Co fuck off and decent management comes in, because mass migrations of the entire userbase to other ATProto services is gonna be a chaotic, expensive nightmare. But I'm trying to be realistic.

...one of the people they banned was from blacksky, where they apparently weren't have supposed to been able to ban anyone from, since it was another instance. That's one of the reasons why it was a big problem

Yeah. I *think* there are parts of the ATProto system ("relay", I think?) that other services need to prop up to be fully independent from some forms of moderating decisions on bsky.social But those parts are big and likely expensive to host.

Same thing we always do, we post and continue to annoy the fuck out of them. bluesky's reputation has already been ruined (good) by us. we can make sure their little "it's just a front end for decentralized technology" dream is permanently overshadowed by "The Left Echo Chamber". CEOs come and go.

honestly im just here for some news and research jumping off points, art, and OTHER art. i realize i spend 99% of my time on twitter[spent not anymore] or bluesky looking at art or following artists or stalking my favorite tv show creators/writers/artists/etc. i honestly thing blogs are coming back

Yeah, we soon outgrew Bluesky's use in proving they have scalable technology becoming a liability as most users just want to use Bluesky as is, not follow some half-baked blueprints to build our own. Other sites doing that work are saints, but Bluesky didn't want to run a site, just write code.

It’s like, I’m a millennial, I’ve been hooked on the internet for 25 years at this point. But it’s like somewhere along the line my drug of choice went from being the pure good stuff to being laced with PCP. But I still need my fix!
