An incredible story. The Iranian Christian woman who wrote “help” on the glass on the hotel in Panama has finally found permanent safety; in Canada. The Trump admin deported her to Panama soon after taking office, rather than let her seek asylum. Read her story 👇 www.nytimes.com/2026/08/25/w...

Very happy to see former colleagues at Ghent University, where I was a postdoc, raising their voices about this.

We have written a statement in support of Ghent Uni's decision to suspend Nathan Cofnas. We resist attempts to frame this as a punishment for "whistleblowing" or censorship of "controversial research". We invite all academics who share our views to sign our letter. forms.gle/qwN8xzEM5C7Q...

I rejected an adjunct offer this week because it involved a four-day turnaround for 2 classes, one of which had an LMS shell totally set up for software the district had lost access to and the other of which claimed in its 1st unit that Chinese sailors visited the US in 1421.

Not to be some wild-eyed innocent, but I think it should be slightly bigger news that The Lancet have crunched the numbers and found that Musk's USAID cuts will kill 14 million people. And that's just by 2030. That's 9,600 people a day, every day, until the next world cup rolls around.

Absolutely absurd minimizing of the catastrophe that was the withdrawal, the level of U.S. government incompetence involved, the damage it continues to do to US reputation— including within the U.S., among veterans and aid workers.

Biden made the right decision with problematic execution pulling out of Afghanistan and he was savaged for it daily. Trump makes one of the worst strategic decisions in U.S. history with catastrophic consequences and somehow the reaction seems milder. Am I wrong about that?

‘Her face was beaten in’: how Taliban rule ushered in a new era of women being killed #Guardian #Afghanistan

dlvr.it‘Her face was beaten in’: how Taliban rule ushered in a new era of women being killedAn investigation into 231 femicide cases highlights the dire situation in Afghanistan, where men are empowered to murder and face no punishment while their crimes are covered up by the state In a voice message recorded weeks before she died, Liza Shams, 33, asks a relative to pray for her. “There’s no end to my days of misfortune,” she says. “Pray that God shames Hasib [her husband, Hasibullah Sarwari] in front of the whole world for what he has done to me.” In a second recording, she describes being beaten by Sarwari while pregnant, then kept isolated for days, injured to the point she couldn’t eat or speak. “I’m a woman, fine, I should not talk about what happens in my home,” she says. “But I can’t do this any more.” On the afternoon of 1 February, Liza’s neighbours heard screaming and alerted the police. A short while earlier, Liza’s father, Shamsuddin Shams, had received a video call from his daughter. Her injuries were shocking: “Her jaw was broken and she could hardly talk,” he says, but she had managed to pass the message that her husband had beaten her again. Shamsuddin immediately called his two other daughters who lived close by, who arrived at the house and took her to Rahmat hospital in Kabul. About an hour after arrival, Liza died. A great interview on running an art institution in Iran. "We are under pressure from several directions at once, and the pressures are not even aligned with one another. These third country deportations are among the most evil acts of the Trump administration. They're trying to extrajudicially punish people for seeking asylum, up to and including with death.
