I think OpenAI underestimates their active user count... because if they showed monthly active users like every other platform, it would be really obvious how few of them are paying. And the paying ones still aren't paying enough, they're losing OpenAI money too

I like this "shifting focus to robotics" excuse. Yeah, totally, bud. That's exactly what happened, and that's exactly why you killed Sora. Yeah, sure.

People acted like "oh AI could do text, then images than video" like that was no big difference. But it was and only possible by throwing exponentially growing amounts of computing power at it. Video needs orders of magnitude more resources than text. Unless you make serious money, it's not viable

I mean in terms of AI burning money? Not really, only a third of billion a year. The other ones are losing 10s of billions but the VC money keeps going in 😬

It makes sense because, like, legitimately where is the "value" of AI videos for a company? How are they supposed to return on interest at ALL

This is crazy. All Disney wants is to do anything that'll send them bankloads of cash they already have. Nobody even cares about what WE as a people want to watch anymore. Atp just go back to the fuckass live action shit.

What we're doing *as a species* is actually pretty fine and neat if you look at stuff like China's recent medical breakthroughs, it's what we're doing as gamers (pejorative, wrt the economy being a fake thing we made up) that's stupid beyond all comprehension

I've heard people say the economy is made up before and like, I think I get the sentiment? But unless its trying to say "everything is a social construct INCLUDING the economy", I don't quite get it.

I mean Yeah it's a social construct that's kind of what I'm directly saying It's the result of social bonds and multiple human-made structures and at a base level it's an emergent fact of village and city level populations,

CEO's are in at a massive level of denial of the usage cost of AI right now. OpenAI needs to make like $250-300 billion the next 4 years to keep from crumbling and their data showed last year that when school was out in the Summer, ChatGPT usage was almost negligible. AI is a massive money pit.

All of these AI money pits in Big Tech were really hoping Trump would focus on given them nuclear plant rights, so that they could all cover up the massive energy cost associated with AI data centers, but he's too busy covering up that he's a pedo with his wars.

it's worse than that. ai models like chatgpt lose around 1 billion per month, and that's text models. video models are many orders of magnitude worse, and active users of sora were less than 1% compared to release date if sora had chatgpt numbers it would have burned so much more

just a note that Culture Crave is on here too! bsky.app/profile/cult...

Details on the death of OpenAI's Sora: • Video generator was losing ~$1M per day • Disney execs found out about the shutdown less than an hour before it was announced • Disney is now in talks with over a dozen companies to implement AI • The Sora team is shifting focus to things like robotics

What is held up as a virtue of capitalism is also the downfall of so many products. If you cannot find enough ways to monetise your product, you're done. Market research would have told them the market for this would be niche. No-one would be paying to make at images at a rate to sustain this.

Okay wait was the 1 million just like. Like I will be real there is *so* much porn and guro that was being made on it. Was that 1 million just the fucking power draw or were they factoring for the lawsuits? And if anyone says "but it was guardrailed" hahahaha you don't have a clue how bad it is.

If they're so dead set on just throwing money away, they should just give it to me. Im cool, and would gladly take a million a day.

My take since the beginning is that I genuinely don't know how Sora even got out of the conceptual stage. The fact that they lose money on production for any POTENTIAL content immediately puts it at odds with the entire business model of the social media sites its trying to compete with.

Disney not seeing that the billion dollar investment was not enough to make this work and pushing forward with ai anyway is why I refuse to believe the moral of toy story 5 will be anything other than “iPads are good for kids actually”
