Now that the US is sadly no longer a reliable partner for Europe, there is a dilemma for how Europe should respond. We can say Europe must become self-sufficient and no longer depend on the US for anything important – but it risks becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy if Europe stops trusting the US.

For example, European companies and governments depending on US tech companies’ services could become a liability: it’s not hard to imagine the Trump administration exploiting the fact that much of the modern world wouldn’t function without cloud services and software provided by US companies.

TikTok was no longer in the play store in Ethiopia after it was banned in the US. I was already surprised to see it banned in the US but it shocked me to know that rules may apply to the app store listings in different countries too

Self-sufficiency can certainly be taken too far, and it would be inefficient for every country to try to build its own sovereign tech stack. But I do wonder how the new geopolitical reality may shape technology choices. Maybe local-first has a role to play in de-risking the use of US cloud services?

When we think about vendor lock-in, the usual question is: How likely is it that we might have to move? How painful would it be? That the equation has shifted to more likely. We probably need to focus on cloud-native OSS over cloud-provider services to reduce the impact of switching in response

I think Europe and US are too coupled together in both directions for that to effectively happen. E.g. even tech giants have key offices and workforce in Europe

Self-sufficiency at the regional scale is not the same as at a country scale. This effort must be made at the EU or sub-EU scale. It will become a powerful way to bring Europe together with a common project. (PS There's a good chance that we are heading towards a regionalisation of the Web)

I agree that we shouldn’t rush to break things that may be salvageable, but I’m afraid trust isn’t one of them. USA showed already in 2016 that its word can be trusted only four years at a time at most. This is just the confirmation that it wasn’t a fluke, like many hoped.

EU countries, in particular, benefit so greatly from their union that EU-centric would, on its own, be a reasonable compromise between hyper-local and fully global

What are u contemplating. Europe has to cut ties to this regime. It's all bloatware. Look to China. Everything can be substituted. US wants the world to change. They become isolationists. The risk has to be taken. Otherwise we will be strangled by submission.

It's easy to see that he will not hesitate to extort towards his own ends. Conclusion? This is a unique opportunity for Europe to: Borrow money to invest (not for consumption) Rebuild-to-scale its Defense Industries (includes data centers) and compete with US Create jobs + spinoff products

That problem is mostly solved? China requires all foreign cloud providers to work with a local partner who actually owns and operates the infrastructure while the cloud provider like AWS supplies the software. So AWS can't just turn off/sabotage their China regions even if Trump admin demands it.

I don’t see the relationship can be salvaged in the long run. Even if there is a Democratic administration in four years, they can’t just undo the damage. The Republicans won’t ever go back to normalcy since they’ve seen what wins elections.

Depends on what salvaging means. We need to #derisk USA, basically a #USA+1 in security like a #China+1 in supply chains. It is quite likely there will be some Trump 3.0 in the future, but most Americans share our values and interests.

Do what Macron did. Put your hand on Trump’s fat ugly arm, interrupt him mid-lie, and tell the Truth. The American people—the majority—are with Ukraine. The majority of us don’t want our country to be hollowed out by billionaire oligarchs. Those who were fooled are waking up. We need Europe’s help.

Of course this is true. We are already in the shit show. However, if you—wherever you are— are interested in averting World War Fucking Three, doing what Macron did will certainly help. Stand up to him! We are doing what we can over here— showing up and making noise.

As a Canadian, it is troubling to be confronted with threats of annexation everyday. We are doing our best to fight back, but we have our own Trump-lite (Poilievre) campaigning to be PM. Hopefully more Canadians can learn from the US and wise up to avert our own disaster.

Yes after world 2 the united states of America was a very profitable time since it rebuilt Europe. Yet at home it denied and denies the equality to it black and brown peoples. White power of hate. Teach your children well. It's black history month.

As long as the current version of the Republican Party; which is what it has ALWAYS been…other nations would be wise to feed us with a long handled spoon. It’s not JUST a matter of being trustworthy…consistency and coherent policies not rooted in hate or personal greed/power.

Which should have already started by putting 100% tariffs on anything shipped from the US. Europe, along with Canafa Mexico and China, can certainly bankrupt the US rather quickly. Might be the only way to get the facists out of office. 👇

Europe cannot trust the US now. Today the US sided with Russia against Ukraine at the United Nations. The US are trying to blackmail Ukraine into giving up their own mineral rights. Ukraine is an independent European country. This makes the US look like back-stabbing thieves, unfortunately.

I thought you were going to say 50 raccoons in a giant trench coat pretending to be a government, and I was like, yeah, that is a fair assessment. Unfortunately, the potential for mass violence isn't getting any less likely in a country with more guns than people, and that is a terrifying thought.

Based on just the past week, no country should trust the US under the MAGAt Nazi regime. Trump is a traitor to democracy, and he proves it daily. His threats to Canada, Mexico , Ukraine and other democracies is despicable and the US needs to be hurt.

I hate to break it to you but there is not one of your former allies who trust the US. The American leader has turned his back on democracy and is welcoming authoritarianism. Trump has threatened his allies with economic destruction and annexation and your think this is a prophecy? It's happened

Europe, Mexico, & Canada should create an emergency alliance that they can use to swiftly respond to the US acting on current threats (Panama, Greenland, etc.) with economic sanctions, reciprocal tariffs... Their combined power on the US economy is immense & would cause us immediate financial pain.

Economic warfare is the answer when it comes to ensuring Trump does not follow through with his stupidity. The US economy is interconnected & without the allies & relationships we maintain, we will be financially crippled. His voters will respond when it’s their wallet that takes the hit.

He's too dumb to understand the subtlety and his voters won't exist in the next four years. But they won't have to by the time he's done. Make no mistake, the 2028 Presidential election will not be taking place.

America brought this on herself. It elected Trump. Isolationism, tariffs, xenophobia were all part of the deal. Europe should look to other parts of the globe as reliable trading partners and defense partners.

First thing you need to do over there is pressure your local companies, organizations and political figures to get off X, Skip right over threads, and start having them post on here. Or even better, make your own similar app for Europe. But we need to stop giving X the legitimacy it craves.

We do have to become self-sufficient. It doesn't mean treating the USA as an adversary, but it does mean making sure we can manage if US support is absent. I feel sad saying this, but I see no option.

Europe allowed, no, expected the US to be the peace keeper. Hundreds of military bases all over the world are controlled by the US military machine. The King wants to be blindly obeyed or punishment is due. Let's hope order 66 isn't given.

If it means working 60 hours a week I am totally down. I can get starlink from where I live and I will apply remote jobs from Europe because I like to help. Time to lay off US coolaid and start busting chops

It’s a very sad state of affairs. The EU has strong technical capabilities. Many reside in the U.K. and much of what’s needed will require Germany to drop its austerity fetish. Unleashing both will require recognizing the ideological failure of neoliberalism. You’ll also need China.

It isn't a prophecy because as you say, they are no longer reliable. Actually, they are quite hostile. So far, the words a lot harsher than the actions. But only a fool would bet a countries freedom on hope. He isn't joking. Trump cows to real strength. The EU need to show that strength.

As long as the USA is oscillating between Republicans <> Democrats there will be no stable policy from the USA. Their outmoded political system is preventing political reform.

I think he is a power hungry narcissist. And he buddies up with dictators for two reasons to get help cheating in elections and because there is something they know about him. He definitely has Dementia.

I don’t disagree with letting Europe lead the fight for things on their doorstep, but that doesn’t mean abandoning them. The problem is that the US is not capable of supporting. We must always be the star of the show.

We can no longer trust the USA. We must be self sufficient, able to defend ourselves against Russian military aggression and Chinese economic aggression. We must unite and defend the ideals and system which have been the cornerstone of European peace for 80 years. Trump is as much a threat as Putin.

If I were in their shoes, I sure the hell wouldn’t trust Trump or any of his cronies. I think the damage has been done and only when he and the rest of them are removed will we be able to re-establish any sense of trust. Hopefully within my remaining years. Medicaid cuts will surely hasten my years

European leaders have been making plans to isolate the U.S. for the last year in preparation of another Putin admin. The truth is, they really don't need the headaches that come with their alliances with this nation. We cannot be trusted with an outhouse much less world matters.

💙💚💛🧡❤️💜 Please share: ECONOMIC BLACKOUT begins Friday, Feb 28. Eat food from your own kitchen. Don't spend money at Walmart, McDonald's, Target, Amazon, etc. Don't gas up your car. If you must buy something, support your small local businesses. Stop giving your money to billionaires!

Europe can't trust the US. This is obvious & undeniable. Any clear-eyed view of Trump or Musk for ten minutes will tell you this. I'm an American, an engineer, and a (former) college professor if that carries any weight.

It has the "If you cross the border, you will destroy a great empire" vibe. Europe not trusting US means renaissance of European arms industry means strong competition to the US niche of expensive and high grade. And US will be seen as unreliable globally so...

“This is the end if Democracy.” I’m a bit tired of the doomspeak! This isn’t the end of anything!Calm down! We can start the old girl up again after we have rid ourselves of the Autocrats, Nazis and Traitors who have no clue the many ways we can bring them down! This gives them power, stop this talk!

I know but there is so much doomspeak! The majority in the US are not like them! We need to lift it up and think of ways to fight it! They are so stupid and ill equipped to govern anything! We need to find ways to resist, depose and fight this shit!

Don’t worry. We are in the process of taking our country back. Even the people in red hats are starting to realize this has been Russia compromising the Republican Party. Support for these crazies is dropping like flies. Just like brexit. The truth wins in the end.

The problem with this is once Europe (and Canada and Mexico) find other partners--which they are currently doing-- they won't just come back to the US if there's a change in regime. This decision will have generational effects. I see it destroying the US economically and politically.

True but at least the US had a working relationship with other countries and hadn't been siding with autocratic regimes. One thing this past election has brought to light is how racist and fascist this country is.

Some of us always knew how racist white Americans were. It's festered under the surface for hundreds of years, like a cancer, but only recently been allowed to take over the body of your nation, instead of cutting it out when you had the chance. Being ignorant of it isn't an excuse.

We are utterly illiterate about what American hegemony is all about; how & why we built it, particularly during the post- WW2 era. At least 2 American generations clueless about the principles behind the Marshall Plan.

I agree the wrong side father served in Korea. And I lived through threats of being bombed by Russia as a child. I learned they are not our friends. Made my skin crawl to hear the nut in office and see him buddy up to dictators.

The USA is positioning itself as a Vulture, rather than the Eagle it once admired. Picking over Putin's spoils of war. Its ruling oligarths whose bread & butter is silicon dollar minerals. Any ally will be treated the same. Fuel for the beast of ever hungry capitalism. www.bbc.com/news/live/c4...

bbc.comRussia offers US access to minerals as Macron says Ukraine truce could be weeks away - live updatesThe Kremlin says it sees potential for co-operation with the US on developing Russia's reserves of rare earth minerals, including from Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine.

I would never trust the USA again. We have shown the world that half of us are fascists who are too dumb to realize how much they hate their own country and the one of our major political parties had abandoned the Constitution and bent the knee to an authoritarian. DO NOT trust us ever again.

Europe should kick the us out of NATO remove all the US military equipment out of Europe secret and non secret increase their contribution to NATO by 1% increase their support for Ukraine and allow them to replace the us in NATO and when china North Korea Iran and Russia attack the US is on their ow

Stopping support of U.S. businesses who heavily contributed to GOP candidates (like Amazon and Tesla) as well as businesses in red states is an alternative. It’s helpful to those of us in the U.S. who can’t stand what’s happening in our country too. Money is all they listen to.

You can also do the same thing that Americans are doing. Selectively boycotting problematic companies. Look what it did to Target's share value. One of the biggest mistakes from the conclusion of WWII was not holding the businesses that profited and supported the Holocaust responsible.

Unfortunately we brought this series of events on ourselves! Europe should be strong and self-sufficient. They will need to be. They should also produce their own weapons systems and think twice about buying U.S. ones!

"if"? How can Europe do anything besides ceasing to trust the US? Having suffered a coup d'etat, alas, we are no longer carrying the proud banner of ally. With the support & encouragement of those we allied with for generations, I hope eventually we will be become trustworthy again.

Aligning with Europe over America is right. But don't underestimate the value of also working with Blue states (California, Washington, etc). They both oppose Trump and control most of Americas economic weight. It's a win win.

It's a tough call in some sectors, but militarily I think it's high time for Europe to divorce itself from the US as much as possible. Economically, a lot of those US outfits that Europe depends on are also going to be depending on the European market, so case-by-case I would say.

Europe could nationalize all US military facilities and assets in their countries and offer full citizenship to any US military personnel who don't want to work for Nazis.

If Europe can bypass the U.S. and save Ukraine, Europe will take a massive bite out of Trump’s power. He will seem impotent. All democracies and NATO need to replace the U.S. support that no longer exists. Russia is at its weakest. It is the best shot the world has at curtailing Trump and Putin.
