Was this the moment that changed the course of Wisconsin’s Democratic primary for governor?

It's corporations which are cancelling Thanksgiving and Christmas. Both have been transformed into extensive play days for the rich who are served by working people having to put in longer hours. Hell Scrooge was closed Christmas.

I once cooked thanksgiving dinner for 200 people….all by my onesie! Wasn’t supposed to but no one else on my team bothered to show up! Those 200 people had nowhere else to go, so I rolled up my sleeves and got it done! And I’d do it again! (Not that I want to….but, I would, because that’s who I am)

I saw Hong 2 weeks ago at the Eau Claire Dem HQ. She struggled to satisfy the senior citizens who peppered her with questions about socialism, prisons and defunding police. I don’t think she won many over in the crowd that day

Sending the fear of God into Dems that the GOP would win sounds like the reason for the large dem base turnout too. Candidate quality translates to trust that they are good enough to win seems to be the key In times past when all candidates looked the same, & wern’t extreme, there’s fewer stakes

Could she have won? Certainly possible. But again, I did a phone interview with Gov. Evers one week ago today, and he was of the belief that only Crowley could win. Was that just a line? Who knows! But he said it over and over for two weeks. Voters heard the message.

I truly believe that the opposition ads run by GOP in the past two weeks caused Hong to lose. If that was the GOP goal, they succeeded. Every conservative WI account I follow on X, they all fully believed that Hong was the most beatable candidate. And I think Dems statewide saw that, believed it.

It was quite a week! The interview with Collins and in FoX. I did a phone interview with Gov. Evers on Wednesday, then I attended a Crowley event on Saturday. The momentum was there

why do these candidates so easily blow up their own campaigns with some of the dumbest comments? yes we all know about thanksgiving but you dont just say "cancel thanksgiving". you know people will eat you alive.

The polls had Hong up by 20 points over Crowley yet she lost. 20 points isn't a counting error. There were 4 other candidates who got 160K votes, 20% - not undecideds. There was something wrong with those polls. Maybe who is being asked, or how the questions were phrased.

Yes, I think the polls were all jacked up. One was taken when Rodriguez was in. Then the second was rushed right after Crowley got back in but before the debate. Then Barnes dropped out. I agree the polls were off.

Why is it always the media that wants to focus on old tweets and not the actual policy positions? It may have been a long time ago, but I do remember when they had candidates on and asked them what they were running on. Now, this culture war BS feeds and helps R's. Sad this is called "journalism."

SMH—why do they focus on stupid things like this that will NEVER happen And not force republican candidates to answer for the consequences of their actual public policy decisions?? Every Republican incumbent should be asked, “ meh y do you want healthcare to be out of reach for so many people?”

They are sellouts who have betrayed us all for MONEY, POWER and ACCESS, just like nearly every politician who is in office. If they don’t take the hint after Trump used them as a decoy-to get shot down 🤷🏻‍♀️ I guess they get what they get for selling us out. Every R should be asked about pedophilia.

So w the primary season ending, we can definitely say that the Democratic Party is populated w liberals, progressives, socialists, and centrists. Glad we got that clarified.

It’s possible dems in Wisconsin switched from Hong to Crowley because Governor Evers endorsed Crowley and campaigned hard for him shortly before Primary Election Day. I don’t think Hong’s thanksgiving kerfuffle did much damage.

Exactly, nobody is going in the booth giving a fuck about the Thanksgiving thing as a serious talking point. Tony Evers was well liked during his tenure as governor and basically anointed Crowley as his preferred successor, that's the real reason this race is so close.

Ridiculous question by Collins, yes, probably hurt Hong. Remember, Collins is another opinion person interested in making news, not reporting news. I would have simply said, "Send the question to my campaign, and we will respond in order of importance." Then, never respond because it's not important

I say cancel thanksgiving. Yes! The very first one alcohol was introduced, something natives had never had before, and then when they were good and drunk they were slaughtered by the Europeans - entire villages - so yeah, I say again cancel it! There's nothing to celebrate there!

Well, it’s certainly the moment every conservative news outlet fixated on. I’m sure if Crowley wins they’ll find some random offhand comment to sound the “socialism!” “Communism!” alarms. 🙄

They seriously do nothing but shoot themselves in the foot. Why the hell would you even say this? Stop letting the far left drive the message. You pull dumb shit like this and then wonder why you kill your own momentum.

There's a happy place right in between progressive and moderate where most of us live. They need to remember that they're going to be representing a whole spectrum of Democrats. She went a step over what most were comfortable with.

Nope. I promise you’re a socialist. You’re just very very confused and indoctrinated. There is no middle. There is humanity and there is conservatism. If your not fighting for the furthest left ideology possible your fighting for fascism. This is literally what the words mean.

I will be celebrating dem wins in Nov. I do think we need to minimize dem articles, interviews and republican hype that will alienate supporters of a losing candidate in the primaries, no matter the labels.

It's also about judgement. Regardless of what she said in those posts she should have pivoted to the fact that changing holidays wasn't part of her agenda or even in her purview. It's similar to the JFK approach in framing his Catholism.

And T’day is tops. Wisconsin folk are not letting T’day (Turkey football parade what?!) get canceled. Anyone serious about being WI Gov should say something like: Our families celebrate the holiday in many ways but Cheeseheads love Thanksgiving for how it brings families together.

The same thing happened in California. A real progressive had a shot of winning, so the establishment panicked and ran towards a token person of color. And it worked here. People who wanted the policies steyer pushed voted for Becerra just because he's brown. Sounds like it worked there too.

The difference being, I think, that she mades some fumbles at a key point & came off badly, and revealed she may not be ready for this office (and I am all in favor of her and would have loved to see her win, tbc).

Her answer is nonsensical. The colonists who celebrated harvest with the Wampanoag did not go on to murder them. Atrocities came later by others. The celebration is aspirational and valid. To remember and condemn the atrocities is also valid (Nat'l Day of Mourning). But they are 2 different things.

Hong’s Thanksgiving comment reveals that if you buck the system and do not endorse each and every white holiday there is, never mind nuances, you will be attacked by establishment forces united in the quest to remain in power.

No it wasn’t. Not at all. That race was needle thin and it just didn’t go in her favor. Both candidates did everything right. I think it’s obvious by how close it was. Both were great candidates.

Maybe or maybe it was the whole DSA tag. Obviously don’t fuck with Thanksgiving. Nothing is more American than that holiday. Yes, sure we can debate on Bluesky the origins and the cost associated with it however, that doesn’t play well in the election season.

I hate thanksgiving with a burning passion thanks to my in-laws demanding I cook them a big fucking meal each year. No one, including my husband and daughter help with either the meal or cleaning afterwards.

This is such a bad take from you. I’m 58 and see clearly establishment centrist corporate dems r not getting us out of this Christo fascist mess. Nor do they ever fight to fix the rigged regressive tax system and broken systems that destroyed the middle class.

Ha.. cripe you hit all the buzzwords. "establishment centrist corporate dems" ! Maybe you should consider Who got us into this mess by rallying their voters to help fascist Trump back to power. When they chose Fascism over Democracy. Who would do that to their own party they claim to belong to?

Median Strategies was a short term social experiment to see how fast unverified data and fake poll numbers spread through the political media ecosystem The exact identities of the individuals who created Median Strategies remain publicly unknown. "STOP CITING POLL DATA FROM UNVERIFIED SOURCES."

I supported Hong until I waivered when all the holiday comments came out. Not because I had a personal issue with them but because I felt it would really turn off voters she needed to secure in order to win and mobilize voters that otherwise might stay home.

To all those democrats disappointed with Crowley’s win, please get behind him and make the same effort to vote for him as you would have for Hong. Crowley is a good man, qualified and has the political track record to be great governor. A non vote for Crowley is a vote for Tiffany.

No, I just dont think she would have been voted for by the majority of democrats. There seemed to be a large number of undecideds and she was never going to be their pick. She made a good effort though and hopefully gets the winner to shift more to the left.

Our Democracy is being assaulted by MAGA Cult and this idiot is talking about evolving on Thanks giving and she thinks just because she can make Mac and cheese then that is what qualifies her for the position of governor? Democrats sure know how to lose an election

Yes. There are soooooo many people who actually thought this might be a thing and did not vote for her because they really like Thanksgiving and don't want to lose their holiday. Some old white lady even said it on TV. People are idiots.

It’s ridiculous- she has a view it’s not a policy WTF are we doing I’m English I don’t like Thanksgiving and would like it to go away my husband and kids are American they do like it So I cook for them it doesn’t mean I celebrate it - it’s my viewpoint that’s it

I agree and I wasn’t a fan of here’s - it’s just the media reporting on just that one ridiculous thing she said They talked about it everyday instead of this nightmare bullshit we are all living through and what her policies would be to change that

Ummmm can we talk policies , can we talk about what she plans to do for her constituents? Thanksgiving is out of orbit conversation and it is beyond me the content of the conversation changed . Gaslighting?

Wish the far left would understand that each state has levels of progressivism. A place like NY is further along than say WI. So if they choose a moderate it’s because they are still unsure. But if elected and Crowley does well it will pull more people over that will listen to progressive ideas.

Most Americans are terminally online even when not at home so criticizing them for meeting them where Americans are is not the take you think it is. Establishment is only popular for the same reasons victims of domestic violence stay in it.

The more they talk and the more folks notice, the less popular they get. As long as they are saying a few sentences... "bring the real fight to trump! Get big busienss out of gov!"....people like those generalties. The further they go beyond the most surface level, the worse they get.

I saw an interview with a co chair person of DSA. I am not familiar with their platforms. Yet she claimed we shouldn’t arm Ukraine. We need to work diplomacy with a lot of diplomats. I cannot agree with that. Their idea seems dangerous.

Policies that align with the DSA are quite popular because they would make life better for most people. Americans are responding to that, which is why DSA candidates or those with adjacent policies are competitive in major races and beginning to win them as well.

Ok? DSA-aligned policies have been realized on local and federal levels. I don’t see value in being pessimistic because “they’re promises” when they’re popular policies and would make life better for most Americans.

A journalist asked her how did she feel that AOC hasn’t endorsed her; she was humbled and kind and her answer was moving. She said AOC and Bernie were busy, fighting the bigwigs but she hopes to meet them soon (something like that) Maybe people felt she was relatable.

I don’t live in Wisconsin, but if this is what turned the tide for Hong that’s pathetic. Thanksgiving is the worst holiday of the year. There is no incentive to be nice (like Xmas), you’re usually trapped inside because of the weather, and there are a lot of people who are on their worst behavior

Do republican candidates come out and say we’re going to cut SS, medicaid, medicare, and cut funding for parks, children’s cancer, etc?? NO. Too unpopular. Maybe, just maybe, cloak some of their ideas in something that might be palatable and electable.

Having worked in family law mediation one of the saddest and most painful situations was where hospitality workers had to do shifts/contracts that would prevent them from spending any time with their kids on special occasions, Xmas especially.

No. I think the DSA platform that wants to abolish the Senate, EC, shit I forgot it all. But it was pretty wild. As a non DSA left I was uncomfortable with that. We have levers of power that are designed to be operated with populism. We don’t need to crash out to succeed. That hurt DSA.

PAC money and a third candidate did. Hope that those pacs aren’t conservative cause winning by 3k votes isn’t enough to beat the money in the general.

Why is it when a progressive wins there’s a lot of denial in the media that it means anything, but when some Centrist wins, everyone says “oh that’s what’s supposed to happen” At this point, anybody who’s against the fascists is someone I’ll vote for. But they’d better want to punch Nazis.

That was a lot of words. I still don't know if she said it. If she said it did she make that part of her platform? I can also cook and it doesn't qualify me in any way to govern a state.

The question could have been framed better but I don’t disagree with her perspective. With that said, I love Thanksgiving because it isn’t specific to one religion and it makes us pause. It has the essence of being an easy holiday to practice mindfulness.

Winning elections is about winning over voters, not about being right about every little thing. Just because something is true, does not mean you should always say it when you need to win over voters so that you can enact change on things that ACTUALLY matter.

A lot of people (rightly) dunk on career politicians. But guess what: a lot of those people keep winning elections because they know not to run their mouth saying awful takes that randomly alienate huge swaths of voters. EDITING is a skill here that would have serve Hong rather well.
