“The experience stunned Ms. Ross-Mahé, who previously considered herself a supporter of President Trump and so admired his policy to deport illegal immigrants that she thought it should be adopted in France.” Way to pick the least sympathetic 85-year-old widow possible for this story, NYT

My 90+ yo (Hard core MAGA) mom is also a French immigrant who arrived in the late 50s and married an American in the 60s. She doesn't believe the NYT. Dad died in 2019, but mom was naturalized, so she's probably safe. But given her traffic ticket in 1983, she's may be in line for denaturalization.

if you can claim a French passport (and you likely CAN) I would be moving to France in about 12 minutes. Alas, my French ancestors came over in the 17th century as Acadian immigrants to Port Royal and ended up in Louisiana.

When I turned 18 back in the 80s, soon to graduate from a US High School, I got a letter from the French Consulate notifying me to report for "Le Service National" (ie the draft). I wrote back to say, "Non, merci" and renounced French citizenship.

SHE LOVED TRUMP AND HIS IMMIGRATION POLICIES. Racist old white woman almost dies over her own racist views. I have little empathy for racists that get caught up in the policies they cheered on happening to others

85YO chained? Crikey. I know she supported Trump and in theory deserves his policies. However, this action seems excessive and odd tbh.

They are also zip-tying children. So this is normal for ICE. Trump said in his campaign speeches that immigrants are “animals”, “vermin“ and “poisoning the blood of this country”. So it’s no surprised that those ICE kidnaps are treated like animals. The Republicans party is now the Nazis.

Trump supporter snared by his policies? It was a good idea, until it happened to her. The lack of empathy is a hallmark of his supporters. How does she think others taken by ICE feel? I am sickened by all of it, esp by those who believe *they* deserve special treatment. No one deserves this. No one.

I think it is worth noting that she is French, not American, so couldn't support him in a meaningful way. The article points out that she believed there would be due process, with facts and legal status considered. She was naive, but I don't think she thought herself special, only legal.

Fundamentally, I believe that the support he receives is, 1, rooted in a naive (crazy) belief that the words he speaks are true. When he goes l about „illegals“, many people support that, including immigrants. & 2, tribalism. People believe the „other side“ just want him to look bad and are biased.

She wanted how she perceived the policies. I’ve seen it in other parts of the world, too. There’s a big swing towards aggressive handling of „illegal“ immigrants in Europe. Media distorts truths + aggressive misinformation everywhere, so people in Europe have supported their naive concept of Trump.

Chuckled at the allegation her step sons were at the back of this, one in law enforcement, both contesting late father’s will. As soon as she was hauled off the other soon changed the locks. Lovely family😂

I don't feel sorry for her. She was perfectly fine with it when she thought the arrests, brutality and terror were only going to effect everyone else. Screw her

So she got what was coming to her, according to HER. She just wanted it to come to BROWN PEOPLE and she's white. So fuck that racist turd. I could not care less if her stepsons fuck her over.

pits pretty clear how the quotes are meant here. it’s common to use extreme quotes to imply a subtext statement. “Let them est shit, not me” — you can gather that isn’t what was said, but what is meant

Well technically I should have use the single quotes so beloved of the press when they either a) lie or b) infer or c) summarise... but honestly I didn't think anyone would give a fuck and would take it for the snarky gist it was.

That's wild. So I assume they got married last year, when she was 85 and they had been apart for decades, to get her the inheritance? But he could just have given it to her? I wonder who has the money now. Bizarre. One wonders how often ICE is used to harass or deport people's creditors.

“The experience stunned Ms. Ross-Mahé, who previously considered herself a supporter of President Trump and so admired his policy to deport illegal immigrants that she thought it should be adopted in France.”

This along with the many other horror stories surrounding ICE are the most disgraceful indications that America has lost it’s moral centre. What good could come of this?
