It’s amazing how many political argument still used today originated with The West Wing.

In this iconic scene from The West Wing, the argument isn't simply about religion, it's about selective morality. Who decides which biblical laws are still moral — and which ones we leave behind? Any fans of the show? I am starting to appreciate this show more now than ever.

It was a great show and an example of what leadership could look like in govt. Sadly, today’s administration makes even Veep’s concept look desirable.

Crab puff. And she’s wearing a crab shaped brooch. Another play on Leviticus. Chapter 11, verse 9 “You may eat anything that lives in the water—that is, you may eat anything that has fins and scales either from the seas or from the rivers.” Since crabs have neither, they are “detestable”

Born in '55 so attended grammar school in the 60's. I remember learning about the US gov't then (5th grade?) b/c when the teacher said that the pres is commander in chief, I raised my hand & asked whether that meant he could order the military to take over the country and be a dictator.

I think I'll memorize that for future use. I loved that show. Binge watched it three different times, and by george I think I'll do it again.

A simply fantastic series. So smart, such great characters. I remember Stone Philips saying he watched the West Wing weekly and said it was just like being in the West Wing

I watched the original airing of The West Wing, which unknowingly and incidentally gave me a sense of what I was getting into when I was offered a job working for a local Member of Parliament😉 I watching re-runs of The West Wing on a local cable channel now! 😀

The "Christian Nationalists say that the bible is their reason to oppose abortion. But the bible says life begins with the first breath, and it even supports abortion. So, like any good republicunt, they just make up shit!

I'm rewatching the whole series and that was one of my favorite episodes. I loved it when he says "No one sits when the President is standing" and the look on her face when she has to give in. I sure wish we had a Jed Bartlett-like president in the WH now.

Of course, that argument is more effective if your opponent has ever read (or heard about) any parts of the Bible that do not prop up some personal prejudice or neurosis of theirs. Much like having read any part of the Constitution besides the second clause of the Second Amendment.

I've been watching Boston Legal and the same topics and issues back then exist today, which led me to conclusion is the GOP is not wanting to take back America, they are stuck and want everything stuck too.

A great episode. We still watch The West Wing, maybe to remind us of a time when we were wiser, smarter, empathetic, nicer and respected each other. A love of history too.

I’ve seen every episode of the show at least twice. I can’t watch it anymore because it reminds me of what we used to be - what we’re supposed to be - and how badly that has been betrayed. Anybody that supports what’s happening in this country and claims to be a patriot is simply delusional.

The problem isn't religion. The problem is people who use their religion to justify immoral behavior. There's nothing wrong with doing unto others as you'd have them do unto you. But using your faith to condemn someone else's faith is wrong. Which is why religion and politics should never mix.

"And get your ass up. Nobody sits while the President stands!" But who can forget Martin Sheen's very first line of the series? "I am the Lord your God..." 🤣 Especially since his character is first talked about as riding his bike into a tree. "A sudden arboreal stop..." per Leo.

My partner and I have just started rewatching it. He's seen it in it's entirety, and I'm absolutely loving it, all the while pitying what the Oval Office has turned into.

We binged watched every episode last year, even "found" a few we'd never seen before, was jaw dropping chilling how so many could be shown today and they would be relevant. Homelessness to climate change, deficits to international threats. But one subject is different: scandals, today they're meh.

The one I find most realistic is when the middle aged white men were all gonna lose their factory jobs and have to be retrained. On the show they prolly were. But in life...that was a sad time. I think that's the origin of the most recent outcrop of disgustingtins

Watched West Wing and Scandal recently and found it depressing that all the problems (climate change, fascism, immigration, racism, charter schools, affordability, housing, etc.) we still grapple with today were the same back then as they are today. Feels like we've solved nothing.

That’s because the party currently in power has for nearly 50 years been dedicated to proving that government is the problem and the almighty Free Market (tm) of unbridled capitalism is the silver bullet that cures all societal ills.

My daughter was an infant when I was watching The West Wing for the 1st time and I’m quite proud it’s a show she watches yearly all the way through. The hope I get from that sustains me I swear 😢

Television’s greatest hour in my opinion, especially that scene. I find myself saying “when Martin Sheen was POTUS (I learned the expression from the show) in regular conversations.

Great show. Last year, as Trump returned to office, I rewatched it and it reminded me of what a presidency could be, if the executive branch was actually working for the people. I found it cathartic.

Agree! The one person the #felon hates the most is completely untouchable and I bet it eats him alive every day. What a disgusting, evil fucking pile of 💩!

You can see how jealous the pedo-king of President Obama’s complete control of that room. President Obama was confident, self deprecating and, the thing that cuts the pedo-king the deepest, he was fucking hilarious! The pedo-king has been trying to recreate President Obama’s magic ever since.

I love this because it would’ve been my late husband’s response to the same thing. In fact, he had responded exactly like this on several occasions when confronted with Bible thumpers.

It originated with The Heritage Foundation, with The Southern Strategy, with Manifest Destiny. It's a fucking cancer and we can't seem to find the right chemo for it

Definitely a great fun show to enjoy! They’re doing a lot of rebooting recently. I’d like to see a well done reboot of The West Wing. With someone who also loved the show being responsible for choosing the cast members!
