the only chart I wanna see people talk about on Bluesky is the Billboard Modern Rock chart from 31 years ago today — August 26, 1995

We had no idea at the time how blessed we were to simply turn on the radio and be treated to myriad absolute bangers! That Rancid album just turned 31 and is absolutely masterful - the catchiest song barely nudging its way onto this monster list. Can we just go back to the summer of 95?

yeah I do not remember that Dandelion song at all, these charts usually have one or two that managed to slip by despite how much radio and MTV i was consuming at the time!

Blues Traveler might be the worst band I’ve ever seen live (that is a Statement). Dude wears a vest loaded with 117 harmonicas and plays each of them exactly the same way (high-pitched and poorly). Spoiler: they do not play blues.

I worked concert security in Southern California that summer (I was 18). I saw Cypress Hill, the Cranberries, Santana with Jeff Beck, Allman Bros eye they first got Wayne Hayes, Sonic Youth, Rolling Stones, Oasis, Pearl Jam. I think Prince was touring. 9 inch nails was playing small venues.

That's right after Jerry Garcia died, but just before that the Grateful Dead tour was overrun it was too popular and Phish was playing small venues and the big music festivals live Lollapalooza were going strong. So there's a ton under the hood. Sublime was at their peak.

people forget about Sponge but I really liked Molly and Plowed. hell, even Wax Ecstatic from the follow up album was good!

Love it all! My brother had Rotting Pinata and used to blast it. Howard Stern has like a .500 batting average/50% chance from like 2020 on of him randomly singing Plowed or asking Fred "what was that song that I liked that went 'Say a prayer for me!'" so at least WE haven't forgotten.

oh that video was all over MTV all summer long, it’s how I learned of her. if you turned on MTV on a random summer day in 95 you would see that, More Human Than Human, Only Wanna Be With You, Run-Around, Say It Ain’t So, Molly, Good, and Waterfalls multiple times a day lol

the only interesting trivia I can add is my uncle was hang out buddies with Shannon Hoon of blind melon and it was a common occurrence that shannon would *always* find guitars to play no matter what the hangout was. they would be hidden away and shannon would inevitably find one.

This might be the best one of these you’ve posted. The world where Matthew Sweet and Rob Zombie are sharing space on the same chart is a better one than we’re living in now

I’m just floored that they initially passed me by. They’re right up my alley and I have a thing for obscure 90s bands that fucking rock. I can list loads of them. Ah well, better late than never.

songs that would debut on the charts next week: Warped by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rock N Roll Is Dead by Lenny Kravitz, Walk This World by Heather Nova, and Possum Kingdom by Toadies.
