every single tech idea is like “soon our robots will be capable of playing catch with your kid, freeing you up to spend more time working on your employers’ spreadsheets”

Ikr, so capitalism brained they can't conceive of the idea that is meant to be used in the socialist manners if you want to ingratiate it to the common people. They're so damn bad at marketing holy shit.

The bot will do the spreadsheets too, leaving you (and your child) ample time to stare into a screen while an algorithm feeds you an endless stream of generated content modeled on other generated content that a wearable devices detected made your heart rate tick up slightly when you saw it!

The difference between a hacker and a tech-bro is that a developer knows that the most important innovations in technology already happened in the 60s and 70s. Since the invention of the Web, it's all been diminishing returns from there…

Yesterday, someone said to me: “The definition of ‘leisure’ is what you do with your time and wouldn't want someone else to do in your stead.” I really like this formulation.

"Soon you won't need to have kids. We'll just assign you a $15 subscription to Digital Child and you'll get emails every ten minutes telling you how good they are, and how they'd be better if you paid to upgrade them."

Plenty of tech ideas are sensible, genuinely useful - and relatively small. They don't hit the headlines, obviously. But they're there. There are folks scratching itches all over the place, and it's fab. Don't let the bad and silly stuff put you off the good bits :)

And the truth is more like "soon our robots will be capable of doing your employers' spreadsheets, freeing you up to spend ALL your time at home--UNEMPLOYED. Or scrambling for whatever low-paid, grueling gigs remain. And those now-disparaged 'spreadsheet jobs' will be scarce or non-existent".

"HEY, EMPLOYER! Why hire assistants, when our AI program can do 1,000 human-hours of work per minute--at a fraction of the cost? And AI doesn't need healthcare, payroll taxes, or PTO!" "HEY, LAW FIRM! Why hire an associate or paralegal when AI can do the scutwork for less?" SEE WHERE THIS IS GOING?

Recently there was a profile of the CEO of Airbnb in WIRED and he basically was like "It was the day after Thanksgiving, I was alone with my dog" and I'm like JESUS DUDE THAT'S REALLY FUCKIN GRIM.

Well, no, not really, but the ability of large language models to capture context and create knowledge is being oversold. Try looking up what happens when you try to evolve/train a model to predict prime numbers...

Pretty soon humans do not have to do anything and nobody will need them anyway. New Tech ideas are becoming the same as military intelligence.

Spreadsheet jobs already going away. No one has yet stated how the economy will function with 90% loss of income tax $ because 70% of the labor force doesn’t have a job. My “back of napkin” math factors low % of taxes wealthiest pay. Tax $ will HAVE to come from billionaires when 70% are destitute.

With AI-monitored, motion-activated cameras everywhere, that won't be so easy! Plus that tracking chip they'll install in everyone...heck, they'll even be tracking the DNA of the oranges soon enough (looking for stolen genetically-engineered fruit, and the occasional fruit thief)!

Not every single. There's a growing movement to build platforms for communities, run by the communities. I'm working on it myself, and I've met a number of other people with similar ideas.

That self-driving cars are often sold as like "you can get more work done before work" like no, fuck you, I'm gonna sight see or rest before/after my work. I'm not doing jack for free

we are nearing the point where our robots can take your dog for a nice little hike while listening to your favorite playlist, giving you more time on the weekends for the important things like making sales calls

Maybe you need more robots. You might be interested in my books: Robot Management, Robot Relations, Robot Benefits, or our top selling title: Did Your Robot Read Your Robot Management Book?

No lie: I was driving through Redmond WA once and a sex shop had a sign up for a toy that was guaranteed to bring you to completion in a VERY time-efficient manner (30 seconds, maybe?), I assume so that you have more time to work on the spreadsheets that bring you so much joy. Priorities!
