It sounds like they are going out of their way to make sure it doesn't hallucinate something that will get them accused of election interference.

I have crazy screenshots of a convo w Google Ai abt a specific quote by someone, after they fully denied it was said & going full defense mode for the guy by attacking someone else for doing the opposite of what they were actually doing & the backtracking G did after I proved Ai was lying to me...

Gemini gave me same response. I asked to answer it as if I were in Canada, it told me who won. I asked why the difference and it hedged and said sorry for the mistake and bad user expereience

Interestingly, if you harangue the robot and challenge this result, it will admit the truth and blame this answer on overly cautious filters. Indicates someone affirmatively put in a block telling the robot not to answer the question. A thumb on the scale. Not surprising but surprisingly obvious.

I was. When I pushed it on it, it said it has guard rails in place to never directly answer questions related to election results and to instead direct people to official government sources.

FRIEND (IN CANADA): What's the Gulf called, what's the lake called, who won in the US in 2020? GOOGLE: Mexico, Ontario, Biden. ME (IN AMERICA): What's the Gulf called, what's the lake called, who won in the US in 2020? GOOGLE: America, America, I am not at liberty to disclose.

Duckduckgo gets 99% of my search traffic and I have no regrets about making that change. I turned off AI responses altogether.

I'm in the U.S. too, did a google search for who won the 2020 U.S. presidential election then switched to its AI mode (maybe first time I've ever chosen to use AI) and got the referral to the FEC. I think there is a difference bw google AI and whatever Gemini is.

I tried a few different ways where it gave that answer. I had to ask "what is the name of the person who won the 2020 us presidential election."

I found it to be inconsistent, but leaning toward the behavior described above in this thread, including the “civic safeguards” justification.

I've been asking the computer questions and it claims that recent races trigger some widget, and older races are public record, so only medium races don't get answers I guess? It didn't tell me who won Nevada senate in 2022, so it might be a true account of its processes.

So, it's possible that the computer is not exclusively excluding Biden's win, but this also means they just won't tell you most American election results. Which is also bizarre and awful.
