“I never thought Elon would muffle *my* legitimate news sources” says guy who uses the “Elon muffles legitimate news sources” app.

Nate’s move a few years ago from being data centric (now more of a hobby) to be a pundit/poker player has aspects of Greek tragedies where your sight is restored but you can’t recognize your family.

No, I think he's talking to people on the platform who think that Twitter is still fine using a rhetorical device to show that the algorithm ostensibly intended to favor high-quality content is not doing so. The corresponding piece on his blog is basically all about how Twitter is a hellhole now.

Does he also act like people haven't been saying that since the buyout? Like he's come to this conclusion entirely on his own and no one told him it was a nazi farm now?

spinning the roulette wheel of "what was the last thought he had before 'this is a problem'" and pushing all my chips onto "i can't find my name"

Well sure, ideological polarization driven to its logical conclusion would be bad. Or at least, that would be true if there were only two apps and both were equivalent opposites and if both polarized populations sought out incorrect information to reject reality but that’s not the case.

seriously like everyone was saying this years ago, he's just now putting it together?

the social media suggestion algorithms have shadow-banned external links for a over decade and one could barely hear the press complain about the censorship because the social media suggestion algorithms have shadow-banned external links for a over decade

Elon Musk new website VoteSafe.org through America PAC, is not operating an official government election site. Its purpose seems to be voter outreach and political data collection ahead of the 2026 elections, this is NOT a government-run registration service or is it SAFE like votesafe.gov

🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬‼️. Avoid, boycott and do not participate in any and everything fELON ‼️‼️‼️

The new trend, with owners everywhere is to stomp on you with their boot if you complain. You have to leave their platform, and solve your problem, then find other ways to share your work. I can easily push a story to 200 people who will read it, it is not that hard.

It's nice to know NYT is treated proportionally to my independent news site. Yes, ALL #Mastodon is worse. There, it depends upon the story, and they have there own self proclaimed stars who came from nowhere and are featured on every Mastodon instance. Each featured commentator is a propagandist.

Elon buddy Peter Thiel literally wrote that freedom and democracy are not ‘compatible’ and that regulating Big Tech is the work of the ‘anti-Christ’. We should stop treating this as metaphor. When billionaires tell us they want to end democracy, we should take them seriously.

Nothing frustrates me more than this. Yes, the number of followers will drop on Bluesky, BUT you're engagement goes way up. You're not reaching as many people as you think on X. Just abandon it already.

It’s particularly…I don’t know if “entertaining” is the word, but it’s certainly something that his example is an NYT article that mostly seems to be getting engagement here for coming across as anything but balanced.

one thing the people who defend staying on twitter because of their follower count there never seem to address is how meaningless that figure is. the nytimes has 53 million followers but how many of those are bots or just ghost accounts or people who haven’t checked that app in years

Or: How did he not see that this thing people said was happening several years ago has in fact happened. Maybe it was the algorithm!

Also, coming from the guy who went full COVID-19 skeptic who dismissed tons of legitimate reporting because it disagreed with his weird lab leak obsession, still being on the Nazi bird app and finding it full of loons who hate facts is deeply ironic.

Also, Nate Silver is proving once again that he's a fucking idiot. Christ. How stupid do you have to be to lay it all out like this and open yourself up to ridicule like this? It's hilarious. To quote Bugs Bunny: WHAT A MAROON!

Nate Silver: Chat i think the guy who bought the casino and said im going to make this a nazi casino with games rigged for my friends may have then turned my beloved casino into a nazi casino with games rigged against me, or maybe im mistaken?

Guy in a mostly liberal social milieu who fancies himself a heterodox thinker gravitates toward right-wing sources/platforms to demonstrate his independence from doctrinaire liberalism, but wants to pretend that they aren't actually right-wing. Many such cases.

I’m not saying it’s necessarily what’s happening but if there’s one guy who’d be likely to think to himself “I can cynically ignore its problems and ride this site’s influence as long as possible and then noisily get out just before the crash,” well…

This exchange inadvertently reflects on Bluesky. It is unquestionably a better set-up for journalists, and does not downweight original writing as X does. Silver has publicly written-off Bluesky, and while others are not as noxious about it, its worth asking why more journalists are not migrating.

As someone who only stays on X because almost none of the beat writers for my sports teams have made the move, the common refrain I hear from those who respond to me is they have built up too much of an audience over on X to ever abandon it for Bluesky.

"I'm tired of things changing all the time for no good reason." "Okay, but the thing that you're not changing from has itself changed, and it certainly was not for any reason you could call 'good'." "But MAH NUMBAS"

What's more, news orgs are absolutely seeing similar traffic from Bluesky as Twitter. And yet journalists *still* won't leave. I've ranted at my colleagues about this. They're convinced staying is more moral than leaving.

Well yeah. On twitter they get away without being dogpiled because they talk to bots and fascists all day and ultimately serve their interests. But they can't do it here because we call them out for their bullshit, and that makes them uncomfortable completely unserious people

Silver is paid to attack any perceived threat to Thiel. Everything that dude says was already bought and paid for … his stats no longer measure anything, they are tools for him to use to twist a narrative. He’s all noise and no signal.

They need to know that many of the people they'd like to reach are now HERE--and no longer THERE. So they really should have a presence HERE as well as THERE. Do we actually have to spell it out for them? Maybe we do!

I read Nate’s post about it and thought this part was notable. He didn’t like that people were mean to him on Bluesky, but on X, he is mostly unaware it’s even happening. Maybe if you’re a big account the user experience is better there; for me it sucked once Elon took over.

This is a pure guess, but at some point on Twitter I read that big accounts had a special 'replies' tab that the rest of us didn't have. Maybe he could more easily just read replies from people he follows for example, whereas at Bluesky he is seeing everybody's responses all mixed together.

For a guy who is supposed to be smart & thoughtful, it’s really quite something how narrow & dumb this is. Basically: the problem with Bluesky is people are mean to me, whereas on twitter I don’t see the same criticism of me from accounts I follow. Best not to reckon with why this would be!

Silvers lament that it’s harder to find useful and objective information on a textual site, and yet seems to demand that a central feature of an ideal version of such a site be “it’s mostly people who are nice to me and with whom I agree.” This reeks of someone who believes they cannot be wrong.

Not sure who argued it first, but I think the issues of “I have a 500,000+ big number follower account means I cannot leave,” is the main cause. They got a high score and refuse to leave the bots/inactive accounts behind.

One thing I find interesting is that the top accounts on X are almost all highly political. One thing I like about bluesky is that the top accounts are a mix of political people, creators, celebrities and just goofy people with cute cats.
