Scenario: I set my username to paul.bsky.team, then I leave the company and they take away that subdomain Solution: I change my username back to pfrazee.com or pfrazee.bsky.social or something else. I don't lose my account or my followers

Is there anything preventing to link multiple domain names to the same account? If we go with the idea that verification is done via domain name you might want to verify that you both are part of the Bluesky team (with paul.bsky.team) and that you own your personal domain
To help with this it would be suuuper helpful if the original handle was reserved (with option to release) when you add a custom domain. I naively assumed it would be and now I *can’t* change back because someone else nabbed it before I realised. They now post on my old handle so I can’t change back
Scenario: I set my username to pfrazee.com but forget to renew the domain name, and I lose it Outcome: When it expires, the servers notice and will stay "Invalid handle" on my account Solution: I change my username to something else. I don't lose my account or followers
They’re building something intended to outlast the company itself; so solutions that rely on Bluesky the company are inherently flawed. Domain based verification is used in the SSL certificate world too, see the DNS challenge here letsencrypt.org/docs/challen...
When I changed my username for the very first time in order to use my domain, did I lost my xxxxxxx.bsky.social handle?
If I change my @name.bsky.social to @name.com do I lose the reserved @name.bsky.social account?
Bunch of tools here, see skytools on the list for that specifically github.com/fishttp/awes...
I work with Fedica - it lets you save drafts, cross post and schedule up to 10 posts at a time for free. bsky.app/profile/fedi...
Friendly reminder to all the newskies: You can schedule posts, threads, media, alt text, and auto-link-cards, for free :) This is how to set it up👇
This feature is being worked on. See https://github.com/bluesky-social/social-app/pull/6055
the *only* exception to this is links to posts that contain your old username. those end up breaking, right? because it's bsky.app/profile/pfra... and not bsky.app/profile/did:...
One thing I want to make clear! If you set your username to a domain, you can change it later without any loss to your account. Let me step through some scenarios:
maybe effectively true enough today, but worth noting: any valid at-uri can have a handle instead of a did: atproto.com/specs/at-uri... uris i’ve see so far in the firehose are always dids, but
Ok, what about the reader's perspective? If a journalist/company is verified by Bsky, I assume the post is genuine. But if it is verified by domain and it is not a widely recognized domain (like nytimes) or a newly registered domain, how many steps to confirm that a post I read on Bsky is authentic?
I read a post on Bsky, then go to the website to confirm the legitimacy of the person who posted it, then go to whois.com and confirm the legitimacy of the website (assuming that the information there is correct)? So many scenarios that even these checks do not guarantee authenticity...
You have to create an alt account and squat on the bsky account to keep it, or else someone else will. The latter is bad because it is likely that you want something similar in name, in your case pfrazee.bsky.social. And now someone could be impersonating you since you gave up the bsky one.
BUT if I set my username to (say) @amerliberal@american-liberal.com , someone else (potentially a malicious actor) could become @amerliberal.bsky.social - is that not correct? It would seem that BSKY SHOULD forever redirect @amerliberal.bsky.social to @amerliberal@american-liberal.com
Google's Blogger (for one) does that. If you change to a custom domain, your original myname.blogspot.com forwards to your custom url in perpetuity.
*assuming that you reserved pfrazee.bsky.social so that someone didn't grab it after you relinquished it during the initial change to paul.bsky.team.
I've noticed that as soon as you set a custom domain, the bsky.social username gets released, so someone else could now take it. Any reason you can't keep that username?
When I check using this website (bsky-debug.app/handle), bsky.social using HTTP verification method by hosting a website with the same subdomain as your handle. I think it's when you release the handle, it's basically like it's being open again and able to be use for anything else and no one...
