I suppose, but there's already a lot of resentment over the fact that TVs can simply become outdated in a matter of a few years. With the extra cost, I think gamers depending on what type will either opt to stick with mobile games, use game streaming services, or just buy a PC.
Each generation, Sony can fuck more off.
I still haven't bought a PS5, they can eat my whole ass if they think I'm dropping four figures on the next one.
Who the fuck can afford this shit in today's economy?
Death of the console market. If a rival produces something slightly less good at a lower price, they'll be crushed or take a bath having to drop the price down. Price point is key for home consoles. Especially as this has been the worst generation for gaming so far.
It won’t matter because America is no longer solvent. Those American dollars in your bank accounts are about to be worthless. So unless you have a stash of Yuan around somewhere you can forget getting a PS6.
do we need a PS6? like not only does it feel like the PS5 just came out. It's game line up is lack luster.
You know the question "Would you have unlimited bacon but no games? Or Games. Unlimited games but no game?" Im pretty sure the latter half is asking if you want PlayStation Plus.
"AI proponents being found dismembered in dumpsters could become the norm": fuck this inflationary bullshit and the price-gouging that emerges from that economic circle-jerk of AI-addled cocksuckers pretending they can run an economy
PC elists seem to forget these facts all the time
Ive seen people pay more for a PC than I have for every system I've ever owned in my life (for reference ive been playing games since 1995) and its normal for stuff that makes little to no difference
A friend of mine spent like 500$ more on a 5080 than he would have for an equivalent AMD card just for 10% extra performance
Just to find out his PSU wasn't enough and had to spend an extra 300$
PC gamers have no concept of wanting a dedicated Gadget with guaranteed years of support that Just Works
Agreed!! I’m so unhappy with how the ps5 has done with first party releases that I have zero interest in any PS6 until Sony pulls their fucking heads out of their asses and drops this bullshit games as a service push!! I hope Sony falls right on their asses with the price hikes of their systems!!
It's not just a Sony issue, it's an industry wide problem. As RAM prices increase due to several factors from the tariffs, A.I. data centers, dwindling resources, I don't see the video game industry lasting this decade. I think it's time for a HARD reset.
If this actually does become the norm, I hope the gaming related companies enjoy the only people buying their products being scalpers.
Cause I don't think even streamers with a lot of money would be willing to buy these with those kinds of prices out of principle.
(And the one's that do, well...)
Because there was a ton of shovelware so if you bought an expensive video game at random it would probably be hot garbage, and there was no way to find out which games were good or bad other than buying one to see?
**side-eyes factories that have converted to making AI-bubble garbage that isn't even sold except on promise and often can't be repurposed** Yeah IDK that such will be the case this time
Oh if there's a video game crash *now* it'll be devastating.
But people talk like the 1983 crash destroyed gaming for 3-5 years before Nintendo saved it, and it's just not the case.
I don't see anyone replacing MS or Sony if their consoles fail. The market has calcified.
As a games and culture researcher, watching basically the exact same decisions (corporate greed and a lack of understanding of the game consumer market) be repeated in real-time is kind of... amazing. As a gamer and game developer, it's fucking awful.
I'd argue it's more than just a lack of understanding on part of the corpo suits; they don't know because they don't give half a shit. They could be making handkerchiefs for all they care, it means nothing to them beyond numbers on a spreadsheet.
One thing that's interesting to me is some people tend to separate "corporate greed", and things like AI, rising game prices, increased AAA game costs, firing of entire studios, and massive CEO bonuses as different things.
I say this as each of those things happened as a result of corporate greed.
The 'console crash' of 1983 was a largely Western-based event in which business decisions were made irrespective of what the consumer market actually wanted. This was epitomised by the release of the ET game (yes, the landfill one).
More cartridges were made of the ET game than there existed devices to play it on. This is because for-profit investors did not understand the actual mechanisms of game consumption. This, combined with a lack of user-oriented support, led to a crash in prices.
+ way more impact in the US than elsewhere. Here in the UK, we didn’t feel the crash to much degree because so much of the market at the time was home micros and also home-grown software houses and indies.
Yeah, the Slim launched for like 299€ with double the base storage and fixing the YLOD, and right at that time a LOT of heavy hitters came out too
Actual miracle
It remains to be seen how that will go when much of what's promised to AI companies isn't even paid for except by promise, often is not repurposable, and may lead to factories just shutting down 😬
Yeaaaaa good luck pushing that in a world where everyone has a phone , a PC, and/or a backlog of older games. The alternatives are plentiful and often better than the bloated slop you're pumping out. ✌️
Looks like my backlog's going to be going to be getting the attention it's been waiting for so patiently. Affording the PS5 was pushing it, but this has well and truly priced me out. 😅
If Sony is willing to consider charging $1000 for a PS6, there’s not much that can prevent them from then attempting to justify charging $100 for the games next. It’s only going to get worse if they think people are willing to buy it, whether it’s worth it or not.
The PS6 possibly being priced $1000 or close to it? No Sony exclusive could ever get me to drop that kinda money for a console. I'll probably stick with my PS5 for another decade.
$1000 and absolutely nothing to play on it, man this gen sucks, but they keep trying to make it even worse, all companies rn feels like they're on a SEGA bankrupt race, i hope the winner gets a Sonic F1 trophy
Good thing I already own more games than I can play in a lifetime. And everyone can pirate more games they can play in a lifetime for free. What’s the sell? AI slop re-renders?
