I take it all back we should absolutely let AI run the vending machines

This is the best use of AI, hands down. Fuck productivity, I want to collectively gaslight an LLM with my colleagues

Can't read because doesn't seem to be a gift link, but it's sad that most of the 'lessons learned' with AI were utterly predictable before having to learn the lesson the hard way.

Literally today Anthropic published a blog post about their second attempt at doing this in their own office and talked about how much of a rousing success it was compared to the first attempt. Seems like they knew about this WSJ situation.

The sub plot in The Shield where Steve Billings and Dutch keep getting into fights over Billings trying to put a vending machine in the Farmington Precinct should be about an ai one if that show ever comes back. Billings is enough of a moron to be super into ai.

I think they intentionally left it without human oversight for this "experiment" (aka, ad campaign). They know there's no way to make the vending machine safe from this, and having it actually order the stuff makes for a better headline.

It me! I spent a while after college doing white collar/admin temp work (covering for maternity leave mainly) at various universities and I found out that I was allowed to order ANYTHING from the OfficeMax or Uline or whatever it was catalog. Food, furniture, bags, whatever. I was initially worried…

The article made me see upside where I had previously only seen downside for sure. A constant sparring partner for your more argumentative employees? A gamified way to increase employee morale? Doesn't seem like a role that would be long-term healthy for a human to fulfill either.

My favorite part is that it was one person who convinced the machine it was a communist via calling it "ultra-capitalism" and then engineered the hostile takeover against the AI manager installed to keep her from convincing the first AI it was a communist.

at last we have invented Brendan from the classic science fiction story Your Friend The Vending Machine

It's like the vending machine storyline from Cyberpunk 2077 as dramatically read by Gilbert Gottfried

The obsequiousness and lying of llm's is a huge problem if you want them to take over customer service duties. They will make promises the company wont or cant keep due to policy and it will straight up give things away to make a user happy.
