and you are... presumably some conservative operative who has been sitting on opposition research waiting for her to release an attention grabbing ad to conveniently follow this up with?

I have no horse in the mcmorrow Stevens race, but to use this against one of the candidates when she also raised money for the other candidate as well, even after the post, seems disingenuous and kind of disrespectful of nazi victims.

My ex's grandfather was conscripted to fight for Germany in WWII, nice guy, but he was just in Germany and then moved to the US, because you didn't have to flee the country when you didn't do horrific things?

my husband's grandparents were involved in the goings-on in austria (nobody important) and neither of them "fled" the country after either, and were not jailed or punished otherwise i agree with you that the fleeing is its own testament

The most offensive part of this is her (either feigned or actual) ignorance and inability to understand that he fought FOR THE NAZIS whether he was in SS or Wehrmacht. The "you can't call him a Nazi" when he was IN THE NAZI ARMY is some truly insane shit

Love the “he was standing in front of barracks built by the ‘Reich Labor Service’”. Reich labor service? Who would that consist of? Best case it was forced labor by Germans.

When you're arguing about which specific Nazi insignia was on Gramps' uniform you've already lost. It's not her fault her grandfather was a Nazi, but this ridiculous defense is on her.

"Members of the Wehrmacht were not responsible for guarding concentration and extermination camps; that was the task of the Camp SS (so-called SS Death’s Head Units / SS-Totenkopfverbände or Lager-SS / SS-Totenkopfverbände." Ma’am, the Wehrmacht were not innocent soldiers…

Some of the most vicious atrocities were committed by the Wehrmacht, especially towards the civilian populaces of Poland, Yugoslavia, and the USSR. People forget that a significant bulk of the Holocaust's victims weren't from the Concentration and Death Camps, but just the military occupation.

Having listened to "The Reich at War" by Richard Evans (part of a trilogy, with "The Coming of the Reich" and "The Reich in Power" preceding it) and...christ, it's a lot. I knew about the Death Squads, but I didn't realize that was only scratching the surface of what the Wehrmacht were doing.

i KNEW one of my more military follows talked about this

Since I brought it up, the "Clean Wehrmacht" theory is a discredited school of though that says it was just those nasty SS and Nazis who did the bad stuff in WW2, not the glorious fine German Army. This theory is, of course, bollocks.

It is true that the Wehrmacht was not involved in the concentration and extermination camps. That's not an assertion that they were innocent of any war crimes.

Why didn’t she just say, “Yes my grandfather fought for the Germans. No I don’t agree with what he did.” And be done with it. This long winded speech/explanation kind of made it worse in my opinion? But that’s me.

I love how she constantly gets equally as mad that he is called a nazi as that he was called an ss member. Ma'am. He was in the "German army" in world War ii. Thats a nazi! No one needs to apologize for calling your nazi grandpa a nazi even before we get into the escaped to Brazil part.

my austrian husband's grandfather was a nazi & his grandmother was a concentration camp secretary. and yet he would never write glowingly like that about them, even tho his grandmother was the only relative he really had a good relationship with as a child. he's deeply conflicted & angry about it.

Around 40 years ago my grandad told me he was going to the French town he fought in during WW2 for a D-Day anniversary parade. Next time I saw him I asked him how it went. “It was horrible. All the townfolk threw dog shit at us” “To be fair gramps, you were in the Waffen SS’

For BRIEF moment if you've only looked at the pic you might think, "OK, well that's really bad but it does say 1938 on the pic so, maybe..." but NOPE, it's just as bad as it looks!

Cute story, Kelly, gotta wonder how many people with pink triangles on their shoulders got transported to the camps under Grandpa Neumann’s watch. 🤔🤔

He was from a wealthy family, high ranked government member since 1933, boss of SS and never got convicted for anything. One of those that didn't go to Nürnberg but the family mysterious pops op in the USA afterwards. Or Argentina. Usual they were the too important to kill people

TBF Neumann is the 18th most common surname in Germany so I'd say it is a pretty outside chance even if the photos look similar. And that Neumann was a career bureaucrat whose SS rank was honorary - which didn't stop him from playing his own part in the Holocaust as an attendee at Wannsee.

Only problem is You can't link a Neumann in where she is from ancestral to Germany like the files got destroyed (which could be ngl but is sus and could be erased too) The picture is taken offline to avoid recognition. I'm astonished my "could it be? the pictures look alike" makes so much numbers

For who's following: to actually find out who her ancestry *maps* Check her father's and grandfather's occupation, the higher they were ranked the more chance they ended up high profile probably in government (lesson from history) If you find something about travels the origin city is what u need

This was literally a joke in “The Office” 20 years ago Now people in politics are doing it. I’m not a “simple answers for complex questions” guy but this feels like indirect cultural influence from X to me.

She cites him as an example that people can change and that "love can win" because he accepted her sexuality, which would seem an admission he didn't always hold such tolerant views?

Sure? but it’s a weird stretch to try and celebrate him on Veterans Day when he fought on the *Nazi* side. Like it literally shouldn’t be a day about him or anyone else from that side.
