I post about US and EU politics daily if you want a new leftie to follow ❤️🫂❤️ If we want to win the cultural battle we need to support an army of new creators. This means institutional funding by parties and trade unions. linktr.ee/roterotemedia

The proletariat sees its mostly of “momentarily embarrassed millionaires” that won’t be poor forever. If we don’t educate them on how we got here by where we been then the propaganda can be discounted as mere narratives. The Post Truth Reality we find ourselves demands our shared history to be 1/2

I don’t think video essayists taking the time to produce 30-120’ heavily researched films compare well to Dan Bongino and Piers Morgan. There are lots of lefty podcasts and daily or weekly+ shows, on the left there isn’t a huge demand for passive talk shows but for quality. 1/

Behind the Bastards, It Could Happen Here, The Bugle, WTF, Canada Land. These all are very diverse shows that don’t overlap cleanly. The rightwing shows are all copies of the same show with the same guests and topics each episode from my experience. Propaganda is disseminated via right wing media..

Like, we hear wacky shit from right wing radio and media all the time, but it’s all a performance because they all want to be the next Rush or Tucker. It’s also easy to get guests on the right because they ain’t doing shit except promoting themselves and bootlicking.

Well thank god everyone in the country can be distilled into exactly 2 camps when it comes to what entertainment they consume. I'm sure there are no citizens that watch apolitical content.

I think the problem is liberals aren’t as attracted to that confirmation bias in their news sources. I tried “liberal” media (podcasts, msnbc, etc) but it’s not for me. I don’t want to be outraged, I want to be informed. Very different from the right wing audience.

Besides Shapiro, Rogan, and Owens I’ve never even heard of most of these people/show entities. My media diet is Pro Publica, New Yorker, NPR, late show, John Oliver, and Daily Show

In a world where we need more genuinely rational people, who can vet information sources effectively, try to think pragmatically about matters, and try to base worldviews on facts. David Pakman goes into this category at times, including the books he's written, but we need more.

one theory I have is that the internet/phones have simultaneously destroyed a lot of ways people used to interact in person AND made toxic and inadequate substitutes omnipresent

there's institutional backing and such but I do think this is a factor. when my book came out I could not STAND promoting it, I hated every minute of it and did a bad job, but right-wingers are happy to feed the algorithm infinite slop bsky.app/profile/junl...

if you ever feel bad about self-promoting your work just remember that the elon musk, the richest man in the world, was crying so hard about his businesses the president did a photo op for his businesses

or as Michael was saying bsky.app/profile/mtsw...

like the left-wing youtubers i watch seem to mostly have an attitude of like "i'm gonna spend a lot of time and effort making really high-quality content and trust that it finds an audience due to its quality" and that's not gonna be as effective as "do whatever it takes to please the mighty algos"

I think a liberal funder could make a pretty big difference here, for not much money! set up a network of editors and especially PR people who can do the grunt work for promising voices bsky.app/profile/samw...

Sam Wang@samwang.bsky.social

There may be a hidden problem here. Nobody's self-funding. Many of those red circles may have funding to help keep them afloat. If the best of those YouTubers had financial support, they might be in a position to post more often.

A similar thing I was thinking was that conservatives have become so much more comfortable with activist tactics because there's money in being a conservative activist. But among the liberal/left professional crowd, they tend to be more in consulting/pr sort of roles

apropos of this, half of me thinks that (right wing) internet culture has collapsed the distinction between promotion and “content” creation. when i saw trump peddling teslas at the WH, it looked exactly like what he thinks influencers do; the peddling itself is substantive policy.

I think there are big creators who lean left but see how viciously open leftists online are treated and just keep it to themselves. I remember MoistCritikal standing up for trans ppl and got harassed so horridly he withdrew to his old content

Is part of this that a lot of would be “left leaning” podcasts don’t delve into politics at all because it’s a bummer and most leftists use podcasts as escapism and not validation? Like Conan, Smartless, Maron, & myriad others all prob wish Trump was dead but not really the platform of their show.

Right leaning podcasts are the only form of entertainment for maga folks. Everything else is too woke/dei/whatever. As a result these pods’ audiences appear to dwarf their left leaning contemporaries. But could the lefts greater availability of content factor into the disparity in listeners?

i can't confirm this but i heard kim dotcom showed tim pool how to juice traffic years and years back .. ad fraud where google looks the other way because advertisers are the ones getting the shaft

anytime a leftish person says something that isn’t exactly precise there’s pile on to correct them as an intelligence pissing contest, reinforcing only putting out rare content that’s been aggressively edited. not sure what the answer is here other than self reflection which people hate to do.

small scale version of this is with the plane issue. you cant say “trump crash plane” without someone saying “actually the news is just reporting on plane mishaps more often. we arent actually having more crashes” like damn bitch are we not allowed to build fake narratives?

some amount of persuasion is playing dumb and these people would rather go in front of a firing squad than admit they’re the tiniest bit less smart than they think they are

Playing dumb is exactly how that 5’2” brain dead unfunny steroid freak piece of subhuman shit Rogan operates and got famous and it’s insane that people trying to usurp him can’t see that.

Making lefty content takes longer because of actual research largely necessary because of the huge piles and many years of misinformation. Hard to do a quick video about *insert topic here* when the right has been lying about it for 40+ years.

Do they include public radio podcasts in this? NPR and BBC and the like? 99% Invisible, This American Life? I'm old and out of touch, but to me those feel like the OG podcasts people still listen to.

Have you heard of Meidas Touch, Mary Trump, the Lincoln Project, the Bulwark, Hal Sparks, Stephanie Miller, John Fugelsang, Bryan Tyler Cohen. They post everyday on YouTube except weekends. They are also on broadcast TV on FSPTV.

It's a lot easier to pull things out of your butt and say whatever than to research and put together a cogent, truthful, meaningful message. Look at how many of the right wingers are just angry white dudes going off in their car.

The Right leaning networks are just that...networks, funded often times by fossil fuel oligarchs who pay them to push anti-climate change and other narratives. It's why all RW media says the same shit. They're unified by a grand narrative working towards the same goal(s). The Left...not so much.

There's the old joke that if you scratch an "enlightened centrist" you get a right-winger underneath. I think it's maybe because there's very few genuine centrists in US discourse. Most "centrists" are really "bothsiderists", a mentality which always favors the actual worst side in any situation.

Essentially, real centrism weighs every side, then *picks the correct side*. But US centrists like to engage in forced fencesitting of never picking a side and always carefully balancing both sides. So whenever one side is more correct than the other, you get ironic bias towards the wrong side.

how much of the problem is that the right is anti-intellectual? if the left tries to adopt this position in an attempt to get more views, to what end? how much is it just smelling it’s own farts? does it risk becoming its own version of crazy?
