more and more I am convinced a good share of why Trump 2 is so much worse than before is because of what Elon did to Twitter. it's like those group chats where people gassed themselves up to join ISIS, scaled up a millionfold

It is horrifying in there. What’s worse, it’s hard to tell who is a bot and who has just been consumed by the group-speak to actually believe it. And then there are the people who spout it, but don’t necessarily believe it, they just want it to be true. Either way, it’s all ugly, vile stuff.

Sure, but Trump himself is more deranged. Stevie Dipshit Miller had a makeover so he looks more like a Nazi than Riff Raff and is now much more influential. Everyone competent and non-partisan has been purged. Trump 2.0 is also more or less what Trump promised. ICE's abuses are in line with it.

Trump 2 Electric Bugaloo is also worse because we all lived through the FIRST shitshow and we thought even the dumbest most damaged MAGA moron would have figured out Trump was a moron, an idiot, a criminal, a traitor, and very very bad at all things business, economic or financial..but they didnt

Not to mention he’s very publicly tweaking shit to push his own posts and followers, and nobody seems to give a shit. It’s a breeding ground for straight up Nazis, now, but like 3 quarters of people who should know better are too addicted to the fake engagement numbers to quit it.

yeah, another real toxic effect of that was Elon (seemingly) proving you can do basically anything to a social media platform, turn it into an openly Nazi sewer, and the addicts will never, ever quit. it might not be true over the long term but SV execs sure believe it

I would love to get into the weeds on what percentage of time Trump scrolls twitter and what percentage of time he stays in Truth Social, because I can't even imagine what truth social looks like now.

It is, and it's the corresponding feeling of invincibility that comes with them never getting into trouble for anything that happened. But it's also very clear that the biggest idiots have spent four years absolutely cooking their brains in the cesspits. Little bit of both going on here, I think.

It’s really about upgrading a bunker, not a ballroom. Trump needs more protection from those he’s planning to affect. He & his safety are the priority. Since these rich & corporate are contributing, does that give them spots inside the bunker when whatever is planned happens?

1st term, Kushner ran gov, coordinated w/ established Repubs, allowed to graft for his bizness. The pandemic messed up their plans & Repubs shrugged Trump off. This round, Kushner stays in the background, Trump has dementia, Thiel's minions are in charge & the goal is destruction, not just graft.

if I'm president next time priority number one is knocking that company over. there are plenty of crimes to be investigated, either here or in friendly countries, but get the NSA to DDoS to death if you have to, drone strike the servers, whatever it takes www.pbs.org/newshour/wor...

pbs.orgEU investigates X over potential violations of social media lawThe European Union has made Elon Musk’s online platform X the first tech company to face an investigation under Europe’s tough new regulations designed to clean up social media and protect people from...

very first thing I would do is call up European leaders and demand they enforce their own content laws that Elon is blatantly violating. he's straight inciting riots in the UK and Starmer just takes it because he's afraid of alienating the US (and he's chickenshit), so reverse the incentive

i was just contemplating this today -- some sort of transparent government org that audits and publicly publishes "for you" / "discovery" algorithms for any social media network over a certain number of users wonder if anybody out there's done any work on this front

I also think guys like Miller are pushing hard on a lot of this because they're racing the clock. They know no one else can get away with what Trump does.

I don't think so. Possibly a marginal contribution. I think the bulk of it is that Trump and his inner circle spent 2021-2024 thinking about how they had been stymied in his first term, and decided to go all in on loyalty to Trump and Project 2025 as the sole qualifications for getting hired.

I have a working theory that Twitter and group chats are functioning effectively the same way Versailles did before the French Revolution. All the rich people are hanging out and cooking their brains, in part because all they interact with are other rich people with similarly cooked brains

Let's not forget that the Twitter deal _itself_ was concocted in a group chat, and we know the names of the people in it, and we have some transcripts. So we already know some of the beneficiaries and instigators.

You can credit Elon Musk, but if you were a participant for many years and had to all of a sudden change your opinion when that's what a discussion is all about, Musk has damaged his own future with Twitter; he never made much sense to me before I quit

Indeed. A huge Biden fumble to allow Twitter to be acquired by Elon and the Saudis, who were always less interested in making a business out of it than in leveraging its propaganda potential.

and instead of just your mom and pop and weird uncle gassing themselves up, the group chats also included almost every CEO, billionaire and political pundit

Agreed, the fallout from Elon's Twitter takeover is incalculably immense. One of the sadder casualties, is Twitter had very cool unreleased projects in the works that were very far along re stopping spread of misinformation. All that was immediately axed.

And instead we found ourselves with much of the work in the space focusing on a different problem, centralization (i.e. how to stop an Elon from happening to them).
