Periodic reminder that Chrome is bad software. It's a personal data collector cosplaying as a web browser. Use other browsers, my personal recommendations are Safari (if you're on a Mac) and Vivaldi (works anywhere). Orion is worth a look too (no Windows version yet).

Just use Tor. Get more people into secure browsing and increase the nodes to speed up even base level browsing. When I have a question that I don't want anything to think I have an interest of, I will open up Tor and use duck duck go to search things. Like celebrity gossip and shit.

I used brave for a while because of its ad blocking, but currently Im using firefox, I debloated it by disabling AI enhancements in the settings

I won't use Chrome. I haven't EVER trusted G๐Ÿ‘€gle. (I feel the same way abt Zuckerberg & Musk's businesses.) Another thing I noticed ~ Chrome always LIES abt the size of its Updates. Other Apps, even G๐Ÿ‘€gle's, don't. A little thing, but (IMO) so TYPICAL of Chrome & one more reason not to trust it.

I can't remember where I heard it. I think it was when I was looking around for which browser to switch to, years ago, when I stopped using Opera. It was a combination of someone saying its internal "sandboxing" system was outdated. And also that you can't really install script blocking on it.

I appreciate the replies. I recommended specifically Safari and Vivaldi because for most people they provide the best & least compromised browsers. A lot of people recommend LibreWolf, a great choice if you donโ€™t need cross-device syncing of passwords etc. (have to use extra software for that).

One thing I like about Safari is that it has very good privacy-preserving ad-blocking available (uBlock Origin Lite); itโ€™s also deeply integrated into macOS and syncs passwords etc reliably and securely. Vivaldi works really well cross-platform if you live in multiple operating systems.

Thereโ€™s also more niche browsers that could work better for your needs then a generic browser. Two examples that come to mind: Zen browser (opinionated on project-based browsing) and Tor (very privacy focused). Maybe set aside an hour or two and try some of them.

You can have Google spying and selling your data, you can have Microsoft spying and selling your data or you can install a version of Linux or get a Mac.

No. Like many other projects and software it uses Chromium (which is an open source project largely made by Google), which is the underlying rendering engine; itself based on other projects (e.g. Appleโ€™s WebKit which was based on earlier open source projects).

Vivaldi is great. Super customisable and while it's chrome based still, it does have better privacy protections compared to the real deal itself. Shout out to those devs! They're doing great work on it!

I mostly like Vivaldi but their insistence to use SI units for file sizes makes me hate them. A megabyte is 1024kb, not 1000. Fuck you Vivaldi, why are you promoting this bullshit that only exists to excuse lying hard drive manufacturers?!?

Browsers have no moat these days. With a password manager that syncs passwords it takes minutes to get started with new browser.

Firefox + UBlock Origins + Facebook Container + a VPN (check privacy/sharing settings!) A browser by itself is not enough, a browser is a customizable tool. Customize it to protect your data. Chrome is absolutely a data-mining tool cosplaying as a browser. 100% facts.
