A lot of in game Cave Story content never made it in, like Wind Fortress. Hell, even some derivative games that take heavy inspiration from it never saw the light of day (The Underside :c)

Some of the tunes remind me undertale songs too come to think of it… “Pulse” has similar vibes to some of the tunes in a way that’s hard to describe “Tyrant” has a similar energy to “Here We Are” “Cave Story” is used in a similar place in the game to that of “Undertale” Was this an inspiration? :o

I always had a feeling the name “Undertale” was in some way a nod to Cave Story, like how the name “Homestuck” is a reference to Earthbound. Neat to know that wasn’t a coincidence 😮

Such an amazing soundtrack. Listening to it now is very nostalgic. The influence definitely makes sense! It's been so many years since I first played Cave Story... Has it really been 20 years... ? My back hurts just thinking about it.

In fact, playing the free version is way better than playing the Steam version because the dev gets no royalties for the version Nicalis scrapped together.

It's incredible to learn that it influenced you so profoundly and it makes me happy you shared this openly. That original version is the first game me and my fiancée got to know each other over as high schoolers with not a lot of money. Years later, it ended up inspiring the engagement ring.

I can't emphasize enough what a big deal Cave Story and the Aeon Genesis fan translation were. I get the hunch indie gaming as we know it might not exist without the influence from Cave Story and other '00s Doujin exports like La-Mulana.

I'm glad something like Undertale came out of playing Cave Story. I personally disliked Cave Story's actual "story", despite it's beautiful art and music. No game is perfect, but Undertale is a far more fun game in my opinion!

Love this. A million different artists took our art in a million different directions but so, so many of us around that age had that spark lit by Cave Story back in the day. The inspiration's always been clear in your work. And mine too. The outer wall and the sanctuary both inspired me so much.

Did some research about it, turns out cave story was sold off to Nicalis under unfair terms. Fans believe Pixel (the author) did not fully understand those terms and was scammed. The owner of Nicalis is Tyrone Rodriguez. Give Cave Story back, Tyrone!

^^^^ This, and also there's the fact that CaveStory+ on Steam hasn't been updated for many years, and they keep selling it despite the fact that the Switch version is vastly superior and has been updated and improved in many ways. It's unacceptable to gatekeep the definitive version to one device.

Way back when I first heard about Cave Story it was almost unheard of a single person making a whole game by themselves, I've always had a lot of respect for it and made me want to seek out more indie created stuff to enjoy. Also I used to play it all the time on the school computers during recess.

It's really been 20 years... Wow. I remember discovering it and being shocked it was a free download. It was such an amazing game! One of the many things that pushed me towards animation school. I wanted to make something as cool as this! And it was all made by one person.

I remember downloading and playing that game off of cavestory.org. It's such a good game. And just like with Undertale, the game has like 3 main ending paths you can take (and unlike Undertale it doesn't have like 80 different variation for its primary ending) :D It's still free on that site, now go

Cave Story was devastating in its inspiration - while Dynamite Headdy & Another World/Out of This World made me wish I could give others the same feelings they gave me, it was Cave Story that made me actually go "maybe I can do games too" - Undertale reinforced that feeling 🙏💜

I first played Cave Story in either late 2009 or early 2010, and it holds a special place in my heart to this day. The indie scene wasn't nearly as bustling back then as it is now, so this game was my first real exposure to it. It's definitely had an influence on my taste in games since!!
