I always understood that the depth of bow indicates your deference to the other person … you can’t get much lower than sliding on the floor on your face … so that means he was very sorry.

Watching fans of Japan's World Cup team picking up trash in the stadium at the end of the match also revealed a profound level of respect for people and the environment.

Most of us Americans are either too fat to plank slide on the floor or dont want to risk injury because of how expensive health insurance costs. Those of us who are actually kind use words as apology and that tends to suffice. (S)

I could learn a lot from staging hitting someone with a ball, sliding across a floor face down while a camera person follows, and then proceed to apologize which he could have already done had he not slid across the floor on his fucking mouth? I could definitely learn you're an idiot from that.

We do the same here in Canada and it can be a veeerrryy passive aggressive ploy to seem nice, but demonstrate contempt at the same time. While the cameras are on, he can perform abject apologies like a courtier, but that same excessive courtesy can freeze people out in other situations

The apology itself matters less than the *reflex* to apologize. In cultures where collective harmony outweighs individual defense, you don't wait for a PR firm to calculate optics. You move first. That's the actual insight buried under the viral moment.

My white and deeply Christian ex husband hit a softball pop fly which came into the dugout and smacked me right in the face while I was pregnant with our son. He yelled at me for just being there in the way of his ball. He found his own ride home that day.

The Japanese show us the way. They are so respectful and kind to each other and the planet. It was like I stepped into another universe when I visited Tokyo this summer.

Meanwhile in the US, there is zero evidence of, and it is extremely unlikely that the child rapist who is failing miserably at pretending to be in charge has probably never apologised to ANYone, for ANYthing, EVER. His entire life has been a series of choices he should apologize for.

I have a friend whose mother and grandmother are Japanese and her grandmother lives in Japan She goes there every year and says the Japanese are the most polite people on earth Americans could take a hint from them

Totally honourable, and a great cultural example. But there are also deeply troubling aspects of their culture that are not mentioned much, that make you wonder whether the two are somehow connected, or whether they can really be separated.

How do you make a Cornishman laugh on a Saturday night? Tell him a joke on a Wednesday. Cheer up mate. And yes, I have heard of the passage of time. I ponder it looking out to sea from my Cornish holiday home. Ta ta.

Can Americans shut the fuck up on this post already? It's not a dichotomy, y'all are not the only other country in existence.

Practiced. If the ball lands far away from you, sliding along the floor like this is a way to extend your reach. Being a good person and apologizing when hurting somebody is not part of volleyball practice though, I'm guessing he learned that somewhere else :).

There was no opposing team to serve to, but there was a camera operator waiting to sprint alongside the player as soon as he hit the target. What did YOU think he was aiming at, and why?

Let’s not forget what their culture injustice did during WWII. I knew witnesses to their current, at the time, to their actions. People can change this is proof Thank you Japan 🇯🇵 for showing the world

America used to be a little like that. Now we’re the complete opposite. We’re garish, impolite, arms carrying, unapologetic Karens who are not at fault…ever. Today people are shocked when you offer to help them or apologize for an indiscretion. I’m sad things are like this.

More ‘real’? What was the player aiming at? There was nobody else on the court, but a camera operator was primed and ready to react the instant he started his run. Oh, and a second camera watching an empty court but with both the player and the woman in shot. Any guess why?

What's interesting is, this is how children behave before they're indoctrinated by their respective cultures. It is a completely natural human reaction and it's strange and sad that it's unique here... I love to see it 🙏🏻🥲

Before West intruded on Japan (Portugal 1543, Perry 1853), Japanese had literally been bred for respectful behavior, being instantly decapitated by samurai for even appearing different/anxious. Also, I've noticed exaggerated politeness among routinely violent groups in other venues, not surprising.

Respect, kindness, apologies makes a great positive difference. Respect, kindness, an apology takes nothing away from the person who caused the accident. It shows growth, integrity, and decency. My personal belief, you’ve got to love yourself enough to be able to apologize.
