About two years ago I started listening to the FT Morning Briefing to diversify my news sources and it has basically been a relentless sequence of 'Markets don't like X thing' stories, where 'X thing' stands for anything except tax cuts for the rich and penury for the rest of us.

Lewis Wade 🗃️@wadehistory.bsky.social

It's very, very telling, I think, that the markets are so concerned about the pro-democracy incumbent winning

'The market' doesn't like Lula, but it does like Bolsonaro. It does like Trump. It does like Le Pen. It LOVES Milei. So maybe the market should do us all a favour and go fuck itself.

Look, I know all the reasons we got here, but we really need to start seriously thinking about what we do in a world where The Markets punish whole countries for voting for decency, compassion, and fairness. We must stop pretending the capitalist machine is an objective, value neutral force.

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

We can rewild, we can plant trees, we can protect areas But fundamentally, to help nature to recover we need to free up more land And the easiest & most effective single approach is to reduce meat eating Saving vast areas of land from being use to grow livestock feed

Flashback to just 15 months ago... Andy Burnham endorsing the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty www.carbonbrief.org/28-quotes-fr...

Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative@fossiltreaty.bsky.social

“The Fossil Fuel Treaty is not just a plan—it’s a lifeline,” said Mayor @mayorofgm.bsky.social Burnham, joining Massive Attack to endorse the call just before a sold-out show in Manchester on #WorldEnvironmentDay2025. This is the moment music, activism, and leadership united for climate justice.

The Govt claiming we must drill more fossil fuels so we can use the tax revenues to fund the green transition is about as logical as a doctor telling you to smoke 2 packs a day to raise the money for your lung transplant You don’t put out a fire by pouring on more fuel 🔥#Jackdaw

Akru reposted

Approving the Jackdaw gas field solves none of our problems, while contributing to the existential crisis of climate breakdown. The government has privileged special interests above the general interest. It's a shameful, cowardly decision.

Government support for drilling at #Jackdaw takes a wrecking ball to any pretence of UK climate leadership & pours fuel on an overheating world - and for what? It’s equivalent to just 2 months of UK gas demand, creates just 27 direct jobs & has *no* impact on energy bills🧵1/4

The IPCC is pretty clear that if we want a safe climate there can be no new oil and gas. But every country thinks it has some special reason for why it should be the exception

The company I work for is increasing our mandatory office days :/ Apparently they really value flexibility and this new arrangement continues to provide flexibility. I guess in the same way that I really value having fingers and if I cut four of them off, I'll continue to have fingers.

They're underlining their commitment to flexibility by applying a rigid, one-size-fits-all approach across the entire business. This is so that teams can spend more time together. Of course, my nearest colleague is in Bristol, so I'll be travelling to the office and then speaking to them on Zoom.

Naturally, after COVID they downsized the office, moving it out of the city and far away from convenient public transport links. They also reduced the parking provision to approx. 10% of the number of desks in the office. If 50% of us came by bike, there wouldn't be enough bike loops to lock to.

Here is how politics, in most cases, works: Rich and powerful interests, whether in fossil fuels, finance, big tech, media, meat, pharma or foreign governments, make a demand, and use their sophisticated tools to persuade a government to adopt it. The government adopts it. Please read whole🧵

As I warned you: the superstar media darling AI quitter is explicitly agreeing with Trump and claiming climate threats are "overplayed". Effective altruism / rationalism is a cult of broken priorities that denies the threat of fossil fuels. This is why Anthropic loves burning gas for power.

I’ve reached the point - well actually, I reached it a while ago - where I’m militantly anti-AI. Fine - use it in bioscience labs and radiology where it might help analyse data more effectively. Use it sparingly for systems engineering. Everywhere else, it can fuck off.

This is of course not enough and it comes much too late, but it is still a significant step in the right direction. He's not at all perfect, but imagine how much better the UK's situation might be if the nation hadn't lost its mind over how this man ate a bacon sandwich one time.
