Since 2004, this community has helped make Firefox and the open internet possible. Our “Come Back to Firefox” campaign reunites a few early internet icons to remind people what made the internet special, and why it’s worth protecting.

The whole of British society seems to take it as given that "losing" the pound = bad thing but I guarantee that challenging this lazy assumption will change minds. Just point to how it has made Germany, Ireland, France, Netherlands, much richer. As for 'tradition', the UK pound is younger than me.

The thing about social media age restrictions is that it treats today’s internet as an inevitability we all just have to deal with. The internet (and the WORLD) wasn’t like this until like four dudes were allowed to own & monetize as much tech real estate as they wanted. Fix THAT problem.

Reform have now lost six by-elections in a row in England, Scotland and Wales. Their national poll rating is 26% – below Labour in 1983 – and Farage’s approval rating is -37. They’re very far from the voice of the people and need to stop being treated as such.

Interesting that the idea of another EU referendum is regularly discussed on broascast media as something that would cause division and thus a bad idea. But plans to deport literally millions of people are discussed as administrative questions.

This deserves reupping, it cannot be overstated. Labour seems fully on track to cock it up completely. I cannot believe that Streeting is even being spoken of a serious contender.

Contrary to Labour MPs saying people ‘hate’ Starmer, I don't hate him and their scape-goating of him misses the point. It is Labour policies and Brexit red lines that are the problem and I see no leadership candidate, indeed no Labour MP addressing that.

Those saying Europe's economy should be like US misunderstand Europe, its values and what works to make lives better. Good explanation below of Europe's strengths and some policies to build on them. UK should be in EU arguing for those things, not outside squabbling with itself.

I'm 56. Racism was everywhere when I was a kid. People just did it, without comment. Normalised. In the 90s political correctness (later: Woke) appeared, and racism withdrew. I'm not saying it vanished. But by 2015, it was socially unacceptable, even in the rough areas I grew up in. Then Brexit.

Yes, and also the bit that I simply can’t understand is how joining the euro always seems to be presented as a problem for Rejoin, not an opportunity. A chance to join the single currency that has massively enriched its members? You should be biting our arm off.

Chris Ward@chrisward.de

Again, 53% is not enough. Especially when this 53% was not given the prompt: "with the expectation to join the Euro and with none of the exemptions you had before". The UK would elect Farage if the general election was tomorrow. They are not ready to return. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

In Turkey, an elderly man who earns his living by shining shoes is visited every morning at the same time by a cat that asks to have its fur brushed. The man never turns down this little friend.😍👍💙

This week, Brexit finally killed our family business. We cleared out our warehouse, handed back the keys, paid the final bills and said goodbye to our last employee. What was once a thriving firm died a slow, sad death, all thanks to Farage, Johnson and the gullible idiots they conned. 1/18

Starmer announces that the UK is pursuing closer EU relations: “Brexit did deep damage to our economy. And the opportunities to strengthen our security and cut the cost of living are simply too big to ignore. We want to be more ambitious. Closer economic cooperation. Closer security cooperation.”

1/5 The geopolitical calculus of the UK remaining outside the EU no longer makes sense. The world today is vastly different from what it was during the original vote. Continued division poses a severe strategic liability for everyone

✋ Former USG war crimes lawyer here. Apropos of SecDef's remarks this morning: Denial of quarter—even the declaration of no quarter—is a war crime. And recognized as such by the US Government. From DoD's Manual for Military Commissions.

Yes, hello, is that God? Yeah, hi. I have a complaint. You gave me this brain that’s designed for finding berries and avoiding lions and now people are ‘just circling back’ to see if we can ‘move the needle’ on ‘key initiatives’? NONE of those things are berries.

Today's by-election is another illustration of the problems with FPTP. The result may tell us less about what voters want to happen than whether they can game the system effectively to stop a result most *don't* want. The electoral system should not be an obstacle that voters have to work around.

Today saw Westminster Hall full with MPs ready to debate Stephen Gethins MP's debate on the impact of the 2016 EU referendum on the UK. Thanks to the 11,000 of you who wrote to your MP to urge them to attend, the debate proved one important thing - we are winning the argument.

I get so angry with people (the usual suspects) having a go at organisations like the RNLI or National Trust. One claimed that the lifeboats were for the use of English people only. Sorry nothing could be further from the truth. The original resolutions of the Royal National Lifeboat 1/3

2/12 There is a reason why Putin, Musk, Trump, Vance, Thiel, and Xi all spend fortunes to attack Brussels. They do not hate the EU because it fails. They hate it because of its potential. Our unity is their nightmare

Here's an idea for Starmer: Why not keep the promises he made when he was elected Labour leader? 👌🏻Public ownership 👌🏻Scrapping tuition fees 👌🏻Higher taxes on the wealthy 👌🏻Free movement in the EU This would be a pretty popular platform right now

5/5 PMs with approval ratings of measles isn't just a feature of failed leadership. It's Brexit Britain. There's no money for anything people want and were promised they would have, and no one can blame the people who got us into this mess because they got 52% of the vote (let alone reverse it).

Matthew Holehouse@matthewholehouse.bsky.social

Starmer's reported condition - incredibly unpopular, shorn of authority, probably un-reelectable and yet will stagger on for want of an alternative - is just the new normal of how Britain is governed. It was also true for two-thirds of May's premiership, half of Johnson's and all of Sunak's.
