My formative political experience was the Berlin Wall coming down, as my parents shared the stories of Germans daringly smuggled to freedom to be reunited with their families, to explain to me the joy bursting forth on the screen and why they were tearing up at crowds dancing and cheering at night.
This, but also, as a liberal I believe in freedom and human rights for all people, all around the world. That translates into rooting interests in elections where freedoms and rights are on the ballot, as they often are.
How often do we see a truly enthusiastic post here about a candidate and what they’re going to get done? Not praising a comeback line or a poll result, but fanning out over their plans to help people?
marine corps boards crossing out their instructions "expel trans marines" and writing in "we keep this trans marine" is, frankly, a great example of what it means that a society is more than just its government
I think in fact that there is a very good “originalist” argument that the founders - who were breaking away from an actual king - did not, in fact, intend to imbue the presidency with the power to order people to do endless crimes on his behalf and then pardon them for it
I think this is key to why the R campaign ran that ad in the first place. It’s not bc you’ll directly find Acton’s mom credible. It’s to ignite this conversation about her trauma and activate our powerful misogyny towards female victims. Yes, they’re sympathetic, but ALSO seen as mentally damaged.
“Democrat’s mom is a homeless crazy criminal, so how can you trust her? Never properly raised, and carrying the genes of a total degenerate. She’s going to be so emotionally unstable in office. Even more than other Demoncrats, of course. How can she know what’s right for normal Ohio families?”
“‘There’s no way to sugarcoat this,’ Lau told them. Springer Nature felt that Scientific American’s criticism of Trump was threatening their broader business—selling subscriptions to their scientific journals. The federal government was a major client.”
Last summer, Scientific American's owners were stalking the site, making sure it wasn't being too critical of Trump. This summer, the magazine was sold and gutted. I wrote about it for The Nation www.thenation.com/article/soci...
as everyone knows, it's great when you have a component of your military that is dependent on their superior officers not reporting them to command for the slightest infraction or personal slight, sort of a "nobody say or ask anything" situation. Leads to no abuse whatsoever.
Woah - boards of service in the Marines and the Navy are ignoring Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth's order to purge transgender troops from the military. "Navy and Marine Corps boards have voted to retain trans members in nine of 12 cases." www.nytimes.com/2026/10/23/u...
There are a lot of good arguments about what the Dems should do if they get power, but job one needs to be a drastic reduction in the powers of the Presidency (and probably SECDEF too). If you don’t do that, the game is up. The next person to abuse that power will be better at it.
“The communications backbone for an entire country’s military has gone down and nobody knows who is responsible”
Yeah we’re gonna need to send people to prison and start nationalizing things.
Now I'm picturing civil rights activists doing short-form video from a lunch counter sit-in. They absolutely would have! CRM folks were very media savvy!
🧵 Also that he jumped bail and fled across state lines to to risk a warrant over his head for the rest of his life rather than trying to clear his name tells us what he expected about the evidence against him.
This kind of thing just keeps happening because of hopelessly unqualified people reaching for symbols of greatness from history and story to dress up in, hoping to manifest reality through impressing others. Ike himself didn’t have to swipe anyone’s globe; his victories imbued the reverence to it.
I feel like if I was reality's editor I'd send this back as too on the nose and tell the writer to rewrite it realistically and with some goddamn nuance.
Not just detached normies, but that a huge portion of the conspiracy addicts they drew in was through the Qanon funnel, and maintained by leveraging transphobia as the fight for the sexual safety of women and children. That’s why Epstein was one of the few actual longterm scandals for the GOP.
really can’t be said enough that this is posting brain. all dunks are good dunks. completely divorced from morality and unable to adapt when normies reject it like an organ.

The Cook Political Report currently rates this race as a Toss Up
Buried at the end:
"Mr. Mildon and Mr. Grenell shared an interest in Venezuela. Mr. Mildon has extensive business interests there and Mr. Grenell at the time served as Mr. Trump’s special envoy to the country. Both men had tried to influence Mr. Trump’s policy toward Venezuela for their benefit."
If you do not investigate and prosecute this level of corruption, corruption will become an institution in and of itself.
And once corruption is institutionalized, good luck uprooting it.
My brain cannot process this level of corruption.
She was being paid $50 million to engineer a pardon from Trump *while working at the Justice Department* as a "Special Government Employee."
And it worked. He got the pardon, and she got the money.

The Saudi military is a decades long experiment that asks "can an enormous pile of money buy a competent military?" and the answer is "absolutely fucking not"
A polling firm got caught faking data. They said it was not faked, or ok, it was faked, but it was all part of some broader social experiment.
Two things about academic experiments:
a) you get ethical approval to minimize harms - which were real (thread).
b) you pre-register expectations. Did they?
As one of the candidates featured in these polls - the infamous one in late June that showed me plummeting into single digits (which was at odds with our internals) - here's the impact of this "experiment"
Pulling the plug on this investigation also saved Susan Collins, who was one of the ones taking bribes from Navatek. Story is linked inside this one, Part I.
look have i thought Pritzker dropped the ball/could've been doing more in the last couple years at times? sure, absolutely
dropping a $3.6 MILLION nuke specifically to reduce the violent abusive monster that is Max Miller to subatomic dust, however, is the kinda shit i wanna see though
JB Pritzker's leadership PAC poured $3.6 million in independent expenditures to take out Max Miller in #OH07. Miller faces allegations of domestic violence against his ex-wife.

i’m just so fucking sorry that my muslim friends have to be hit with this despicable racism every single day. it’s not ok and you should not have to tolerate it. this country belongs to all of us.
Trump on El-Sayed: "His name is actually Abduladadalalalala. It's Adulbabababababa Mohammed Al-Sayed. So his middle name is Mohammed. So I was right. He's a jihadist."
Masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian villagers on Friday, setting olive groves on fire and slinging rocks.
Caught in the attack was Post photographer Heidi Levine. “They just kept kicking me and kicking me, like probably 50 times,” Levine said. https://wapo.st/4yt6dHY
A girl won the role of Seymour in South Grand Prairie High School in Texas.
Then, the district freaked out because of Texas' anti-trans and anti-gay law.
So they tried to strip her role and give it to a boy.
She refused, so now they are cancelling the play.

Yesterday I attended a CLE conference that included a speaker who went on and on about male and female ways of thinking with the worst stereotypes you ever heard. Not just incredibly insulting to each, but presented in absurdly absolutist terms.
If she’d been a man, there would’ve been walkouts /
But we’ve all been conditioned to sit through the TERFiest bioessential nonsense because of what arguably was the worst part of so-called Woke 1: that what a message can say is less key than who can say it. Indeed, there was a bit of a dam break effect when someone online ventured a question about /
nonbinary people, which the speaker predictably and utterly ignored. But it shouldn’t have taken tokenizing a group not even present, borrowing their moral authority as purer victims, as sanction for the vibe to turn decisively against a presentation that was that blatantly bad.
I don’t know if I’m more confused by the entire concept of a single sex emergency ward or the reading that this was multisex and she was upset by a trans person being treated there *anyway*! Like is the idea she’s advancing that trans people should just be banned from emergency treatment?
When Los Angeles was burning, I met countless firefighters who came south to help us battle the blazes and save our homes and lives.
Sadly, all too many Canadians feel betrayed by the President’s attacks on Canada, his demeaning comments about the country, and the 51st state nonsense.
Mike Rogers’ wife is handing out $10 gas cards in Michigan while asking people to vote for her husband.
Republicans made gas unaffordable. Now they’re offering $10 to keep them in power.

As I always say, you could, if you wanted, create a very demanding application system that would sound very stern but was actually a big liberalization of immigration.
I'd just let a bunch more people in, but I get that's not where everyone else is.
In conclusion, words have meanings. Lines of code spitting out probabilistic responses to queries is not slavery. Telling people they have to pay taxes isn't slavery. Being told to wear a mask during a pandemic isn't slavery. People who endured slavery are PEOPLE. They suffered. I reiterate: hands.
"For so many years, there was a really strict line in the sand when it came to sports betting. Then the tide slowly began turning internally. It was very troubling for me to see the normalization of betting and ESPN’s complete acceptance of that, and finally, they just decided to go all in."
They can’t move off of it even when it’s clearly not working because MAGA has destroyed the conservative platform so thoroughly, and Trump is so mercurial, they literally have nothing else. What should the GOP run ads on? The economy? National security? Crime? Responsibility? Unity? The deficit?
Fascinating tidbit in this interview with former Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont), he says that Texas Republicans anti-transgender ads aren't "resonating."
"What Republicans are talking about is just not what the swing voter is really interested in." www.texasmonthly.com/news-politic...
BREAKING: " Videos collected by local investigators make it “pretty obvious” that an ICE officer intentionally ran over Miguel Parra Hernandez during an immigration stop Saturday, which could lead to assault charges, the district attorney said Tuesday."
Billions of dollars’ worth of contracts predicting oil would fall and the S&P 500 would rise were placed about 15 minutes before Trump announced a U-turn on Iran in a post on Truth Social. CFTC staff began to investigate...then were told to lay off. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
