A while ago I made this chart to illustrate that yearly additions of solar and wind (in TWh of energy) are growing fast while nuclear is largely stable. But solar and wind started small versus the older and established technology nuclear. This year we've reached a new milestone.

The cryosphere is in real trouble. That means that people and agriculture downstream will be too.

NEW BLOG FOR YOU Google's energy consumption numbers in their new climate report are mind-blowing. 2 years ago they flipped from linear to exponential growth, and their climate impact is blowing out, too. A WILD testament to the obscene bloat and waste of GenAI: ketanjoshi.co/2026/07/01/g...

Interesting: the spatial pattern of afforestation matters for climate. It’s well known that reducing forest edges affects biodiversity and produces a climatic buffering effect, but (in China) it also produces more biomass (carbon) than planted forests with more edges.

Europe urgently needs more (and more democraticly distributed) AC but AC is not a bolt-on fix. The divide between the Cooled and the Damned will persist and even grow. And nobody’s going to AC the farms, forests, the ocean.

The big question - when indeed will the Environment Agency do what it exists to do and, you know, er, enforce the law? Great work by @nicolacutcher.bsky.social and @friendsriverwye.bsky.social

Environment Agency inaction is a huge scandal. On the Wye and many other rivers agricultural pollution is the most significant factor in worsening water quality. When will the EA enforce the law and protect our rivers? @riveractionuk.bsky.social @georgemonbiot.bsky.social @savethewye.bsky.social

Where’s the fury about rightwing antisemitism? The newspapers that call out leftwing antisemitism publish antisemitic cartoons and champion politicians with a record of antisemitic statements. So who is holding *them* to account? This week’s column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

39 countries cut energy taxes after the Iran war. Politically popular but self-defeating: untargeted subsidies blunt the price signals, lead to higher demand, cost the tax payer significantly more and provide less incentive to invest in alternatives.

Now is the time for bold fiscal, industrial, and policy action. Those who seize this moment will define the future, those who refuse it either due to pressure from deficit hawks and anti-tax advocates or thanks to the power of oil right now will be left in the past. 23/end
