What's the new talk, you might ask? Well, here's two clues, one of which is unhelpful to literally everyone except one person. The first clue is this book. The second clue is that one specific person who left a comment on my talk at Nebraska.Code is going to be very happy about it.

Some of you (especially @toribrenneison.bsky.social) are going to be very happy with my new talk for Codemash this year - it will herald the return of Noodles after several years of being dormant.

I know it’s sorta cheesy but someone posted this from Paris on Reddit and I felt this immediate rush of hope

This is it. This is my breaking point. We have to stop. We have to stop with computers. We have to stop computers. We need to stop computers so we can take a break for a decade and then build them back better.

In the vein of "public libraries could never be created today," a pitch for a calculator would get you thrown out of the boardroom. What do you mean, it just maths? Where are the ads supposed to go? How does it send usage telemetry back if it doesn't even have wifi? There isn't even a leaderboard.

and right when people were making algorithmic bias/inequality more visible, many of those processes were **mysteriously** relabeled "AI" and that whole conversation got erased...

automating the bigotry is one of the main goals of the "AI revolution"

The ovals are DESTROYING me.

Today Microsoft Azure asked me for some feedback. Pretty sure we solved "circles" back in the 1990s. I remember radio buttons working just fine in Netscape Navigator. But maybe AI decided it's better this way. 🤷🏻‍♂️

2022: AI is here! You can just ask it stuff! 2023: Asking it doesn't work, we need to prompt engineer it. 2024: Prompt engineering doesn't work, we need RAG 2025: RAG doesn't work, we need Gastown 2026: Gastown doesn't work, we need Jev 2027: Jev doesn't work, we need Poob 2028: Poob doesn't work…

"Old, bad habits that you have from 2025-era agents" *All your painfully-learned 'agentic engineering" was a one-year fad. How often do you plan to buy into this? You could have bought meme-stocks with one percent of that effort youtu.be/jDG7L5HuBnk?...

This, but for drawing your own slides for talks. Here is a series of images of my slides over the years. Starting in 2017 and continuing until my most recent. Just get started. You'll get better as you go, even if you only build talks once or twice a year.

For those interested in making comics: Please do it. Do it now. Your first few comics will suck, but it will get better with the time and energy you put into it.

The title slides are a better representation of skill since I don't always go hard on the individual slides, since they're on-screen for so little time, usually.

Every piece of technology that you actually enjoy using was built using some form of public digital infrastructure and digital standards. The early web? DARPA. Mapping apps? GPS and USGS shapefiles. Streaming music and video? The MPEG standards group. Fight for public digital infrastructure.

This thread!

much like cheating on homework, ai hits metrics at the expense of goals and unless your goals are "creating things of marginal value and utility", like throwaway programs, then well, you're usually creating more work for yourself that's what anthropic found out from their peer reviewed study heh

Make today the day you rediscover the movie Clue, an absolutely terrible film that is elevated into the stratosphere by multiple high-energy performances, not the least of which being Tim Curry's.

Things To Do With Potatoes Throw a potato on the ground behind a stranger, then say "Excuse me, you've dropped your potato!". If they deny ownership, pull another potato from your pocket, saying "Well it's definitely not my one". Hide a potato in a pair of shoes at a bowling alley.
