Time is not the bottleneck. A worker's influence comes from the fact that their labor is necessary to achieve the business's needs. Any say in setting strategy comes only FROM that influence. Belief that our labor becoming *less* needed somehow converts into *more* influence is hopelessly naive.

The First Wonder of the Cyberworld: Virtual Vegas! There's so much to unpack here in this cyber-futuristic ad for what was likely going to be a whole series of 'Virtual Vegas' experiences for Windows 3.1. One of the key selling points was voice recognition. 📖: Computer Gaming World, Nov 1994

my entire life trajectory was oriented towards "being good at things", I sacrificed quite a lot to get where I am today, and now society has deemed expertise not very valuable anymore and for what little remains, AI/people using AI will siphon it out of you the very moment they smell it in the air

SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.

Elon Musk has hosted SNL and appeared on Rick and Morty more frequently that he has testified to Congress (zero fucking times). Fix that.

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

What can Dems actually do about DOGE? A Democratic Congress has a real opportunity to engage in the type of oversight that DOGE has avoided thus far. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/blockers-a...

Probably a bad thing that the right can come up with a totally nonsense conspiracy theory about James Talarico and journalists have to spend valuable time 3 weeks before the election debunking it instead of covering Paxton actually going to Dubai with his mistress on a trip paid for by a criminal

google's pushing me videos saying people creating 401ks are idiots for not shoving all their money into ai companies this is surely just the most rational exuberance

> So then I asked my daughter, "Hey, what are you working on right now?" She said, "Oh, I'm putting together my 401k plan." I was like, "Did you listen to the podcast?" She's like, "No, I don't tune in to Elon." I was like, "Okay." I don't know why you wouldn't tune in to Elon. The boys all do.

this is agents, right? not a scrape for training runs, but someone telling claude they want all the pictures on the website or something?

jess m. ☕🍂@jametc.bsky.social

Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.

Google Gemini says that @jevinwest.bsky.social and I aren't to be trusted because in our first lecture, we had a playful example where Jevin presented data the same way that Tim Cook did, and I called bullshit on it. It hallucinates criticism and the only citations are to the lecture itself.

my dad had one of these, was a pretty fun novelty scanning everything around me

scottsgear.com@scottsgear.com

Remember Cuecat? Those of you not old enough to have owned one of these: this barcode scanner allowed you to scan codes printed in magazines that took you to advertisers websites. Think QR codes, but for the 2000 bubble. Millions were handed out for free. Huge flop of course.

This really puts stuff like publicly funded third spaces in perspective for me. It's so relatively cheap to build out community centers, gyms, makerspaces, studios etc.

Tim O’Brien@timobrien.bsky.social

The AI build-out is on track to become the biggest economic bet in U.S. history, dwarfing the investments made to fund other huge U.S. infrastructure projects such as the railroads, the highway system and the plumbing for the internet. www.wsj.com/economy/the-...

Yes, the Andreessen Horowitz-backed big tech boarding school that takes students as young as 16 is, in fact, advertising Tyler Cowen - he of the "if you wish to see a virgin on-screen, this is one of your better chances" creep article - as faculty.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.
