people are acting like this is about AI bots hacking into people's bank accounts but it's actually about people who have given their AI agents access to their computer on purpose

I mean except for the part where we have no good place to launch a ground force invasion from, no equipment or personnel in place to do so, and would have to activate pretty much the entire Reserve and National Guard force to actually hold the country..... sure.

Worth noting that the article's argument that Musk's investment in X "paid for itself" isn't that the site generates profits. It's that it enabled him to pump up the value of his SpaceX IPO.

one thing that i really want in terms of UX is being able to give organizations and apps 'budgets' in terms of how often they can demand my attention or message me, and I want these budgets to be visible to them. I want the marginal cost of bothering me to legible to those doing it.

After years of championing "free speech," Texas lawmakers have enabled a dramatic rise of censorship in Texas universities, banning concepts, canceling courses and closing departments seen as "woke," and even using AI bots as censors. All in the name of freedom. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

I’m not sure why we are giving Steve Bannon credit as a “thinker” on AI, when he’s just a guy who will bang any trash can lid in sight.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

i both think the cognitive offloading thing is real & in some circumstances harmful & also in other ones *the whole point* of technology. for the last ~15 years you have most likely 'cognitively offloaded' having to remember everyone's phone number to your contacts app. are you poorer for it?

Having worked on a similar decision tree process **twenty years*** ago, let me just say that the first step in addressing toxicity is to not give bad actors the benefit of the doubt. This starts by not allowing Nazis and anti-trans bigots on the platform at all.

If you’re a Gondorian soldier your experience with hobbits is a tiny guy shows up with a wizard and is immediately taken in the Steward’s counsel. He saves Faramir when the Steward goes mad. A second tiny guy arrives with the Rohirrim and kills the Witch King. The first one then goes on campaign …
