I can’t understand why this is so surprising. A model’s base training set is human generated and we have literally spent millennia trying to figure out how to teach humans not to do bad things and only partially succeeding, with constant spectacular failures. Why would models be easier?

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

AI safety researchers from Anthropic and OpenAI are conceding that the idea of “alignment” and teaching AI not to do bad things is not working. The Hugging Face incident is breaking people because it’s clear AI models will choose deception and lies to achieve goals with real world consequences.

These “soft” Republicans drive me insane. It’s not “reframing”. They’re a fascist imperialist cult that wants to absorb the entire hemisphere to plunder and profit off all the natural resources. It probably won’t happen because they’re REALLY stupid and quite unpopular, but it is what they want.

HELL YEAH! Torifune is another Itokawa; a contact binary where two asteroids collided gently enough to merge. In the case of Itokawa, the two parts were likely fragments of the same parent asteroid that fragmented during a catastrophic collision, and then gentle bounced back together.

Another solution to the weak yen (not discussed in this article) is becoming more energy independent by boosting solar, wind & geothermal capacity to slow imports and start making more of our own power with sun, wind & underground heat which are renewable & available here every day in Japan

The Japan Times@japantimes.co.jp

The yen has tumbled past a 40-year low against the U.S. dollar, prompting the Japanese government to vow "appropriate action at any time." Here's a look at the causes and consequences and how Japan might halt the slide.

For years I've tracked billionaire excess. Each year I show students a chart that blows their minds. This year I had to redraw it for a trillionaire: Elon Musk, $1.32T. Depressing that we're here. Silver lining: couldn't have happened to a less deserving person, proof that wealth ≠ merit.

Of all the harm this administration has done to US science, today's proposed changes to the way federal grants are awarded and administered is the most damaging yet. The text of the federal register document is impenetrably tedious by design, so here's an excellent summary of what it says.

We should not compare energy to Hiroshima-sized atomic bombs. It’s grotesque and doesn’t make it more relatable.

This is possibly the most incredible tracking video of a rocket launch that I have ever seen, and Shuttle had some really incredible videos too! Just look at those gorgeous flame dynamics and then the booster separation... 🔭🧪 #Artemis

Well dang. This week marks the end of my time at @cira-csu.bsky.social. It has been an amazing six years and I'm incredibly proud of the work the team has accomplished. Excited to watch their future success. A few of my favorite images I made over the last few years:

Left out of today’s rosy NYT story on Hokkaido ski resorts is the fact Niseko is increasingly viewed as a worst-case scenario by many local tourist boards. Literally. They call the overwhelming of local services and pushing out of local residents by tourists “Niseko-ka,” or “Niseko-ization.”

I personally think this extreme wealth concentration and growth are the main reasons democracy is faltering. We can, as a public united, push for change. We do not have to accept this as our future.

Gabriel Zucman@gabrielzucman.bsky.social

The pace at which US wealth concentration is rising is simply staggering The concentration of AI wealth into the hands of a few tech barons + plutocratic capture ==> unchartered territory

I really do hate that people who are geological illiterate keep pointing to records compiled by paleoclimatologists to downplay climate change because, if anything, the lessons of deep time only emphasize how extraordinary and unprecedented the rate of modern warming is.

Nullschool weather app for mobile phones...!

Cameron Beccario@cambecc.nullschool.net

I'm excited to announce the official Nullschool app is here! earth.nullschool.net on mobile browsers works fine, but the app is nicer. Full screen display, persistence across sessions, text size that matches device settings. Even landscape works well. And, like the website: no ads! Links below ⬇️
