Hi, I'm a chaplain. My greatest hits include: "That sucks," "Fuck cancer AND covid," "Actually, a lot of people in the Bible were angry at God," and "no one knows what they're doing, everybody needs to be weak sometimes." Plus, don't miss my classic: "What if you still have a future?" ⚓️🛟🩺🧪

Hi, I’m a historian. My greatest hits include “Yes, people lived to 70+ in pre-modern ages; ‘average’ life span of 40 just accounts for all the kids dead before 5 with no #vaccines,” “Yes, birth control was around before Ancient Egyptians,” and “Yes, ffs, #transgender /LGBTQIA have ALWAYS been” 🗃️🧪🩺🏳️‍⚧️

on the internet people will call almost anything liberalism. war with iraq, death by firing squad, npic infighting, everything. so a few weeks ago at liberal currents, we put out a challenge to all the editors: what is liberalism, actually? today we get our first essay, from lc founder adam gurri:

Liberal Currents@liberalcurrents.com

“What I will offer you instead is something simpler, and perhaps harder: a vision of life under liberalism, as distinct from the political project.” www.liberalcurrents.com/liberalism-i...

Everyone who is saying "Dems in red states have to throw trans people under the bus to win" -- no. They don't. When they do that, we just start with no winning options on the table. It gives in to the fascist premise that we get to decide some groups don't get rights. THIS is what I want to see.

BeshearStan@beshearstan.bsky.social

Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights: “I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”

King James II’s reign and the Glorious Revolution was supposed to enforce the general idea that the executive cannot suspend the laws of the land and must faithfully execute them. Why should the pardon power be used as a runaround to subvert the rule of law rather than being used as an act of mercy?

Calling empathy sin is calling good evil and evil good, it is Antichrist, the people promulgating it are Antichrist and false teachers, they are the wolves among the flock our Lord warned us about.

When I was 15 I would sit with Dragon Age: Origins and save before every big dialogue. I would replay them over and over and physically write out the trees. I didn’t know at that point that writing or narrative design was even a job I could have. They had such an enormous impact as a studio.

No. British people in their 70s and 80s did not fight in the Second World War. If you’re 89 you were born in 1937. You might just barely remember the blitz.

“That’s so racist even CBS won’t let you say it” actually sums up how far CBS has fallen.

Steve Vladeck@stevevladeck.bsky.social

Yeah, the problem with the tweet *wasn’t* that it violated “CBS News standards.”

Chaplain John reposted

Right, the problem was that it showed this correspondent was (1) biased & bigoted and (2) unable to understand what had actually transpired at the event, both of which are disqualifying for a reporter.

Watching Vance light his 2028 prospects on fire in real time is something

The husband of a U.S. soldier killed in Trump's Iran war confronts JD Vance over alleged military leadership failures that led to the deaths of his wife and five other service members. JOEY AMOR: “There's a failure in the leadership.” VANCE: “This is literally the first time I've heard of this.”

❗❗❗Mark Zuckerberg's meta just suspended the No Kings Instagram account. I just rushed back from my local No Kings to jump on this. Bottom line, would be helpful for all pro-No Kings folks to elevate the issue and help us get the word out about No Kings today. The Nerd Reich strikes again.

My students are so radicalized at this point that I am a milquetoast Gen X squish. For the record, they changed around 2017; I always remember when a set of students came up to me in Property and were like: why aren’t you teaching from your book on Property Law and Race?

With the disclaimer this is pure anecdata from only one area of one state, I have never in my life seen a 40-minute wait on Day 1 of early voting at the South Library location of Durham NC I have also never once seen any wait at all at my early voting spot (the "12") Also notice the north / R area

The threat of streaming the execution accomplished its purpose. The fact that they were *willing* to do it was a performance of brutality meant to impress and scare us. But…it made people angry. Intensified opposition. Their threats are motivating people to fight harder.

Hmmm 🤔 #flock

New — Rashida Tlaib introduces the "Get the Flock Out of Our Communities Act." The bill would: —Ban use of federal funds to buy or operate automated mass surveillance systems, like Flock. —Require state & local govts to divest from such systems to remain eligible for certain law enforcement grants.

I saw a lot of this during the last election. "You are acting like we have to vote in every election like the wolves are at the door! That isn't sustainable!!" Yes. It is. It is burdensome, which is why we need universal voter registration and easier ways to vote. But this is the fight that...

...humans have always been in. This is rhe reality that some of us in the US got to ignore for most of our lives. Mostly white people. Well, that world ended BEFORE the plague. It is done. We have to fight for what we believe in. But the fight is worth it. Let's win together.

A good summation of David Brooks and "civility" politics generally: no one on the right-wing can ever be described honestly, while everyone who isn't on the right-wing is always portrayed as a radical breaking cherished norms.

driftglass@driftglass.bsky.social

"Jon Ossoff, my advice to him is, if you start calling your political opponents Nazis, maybe it's time to shut up. That's just not what we do here in this country." -- David Brooks, this evening. Remember, Brooks still gets very handsomely rewarded by the fossilized media for saying shit like this

the funny thing about this of course is that "athenian democracy" was a cautionary tale to the framers, who saw it as unstable and prone to demagogues and tyrants like the one rubio works for
