OTD in 1946 Operation Osoaviakhim took place in soviet controlled Germany. 2500 engineers were deported to USSR to help build soviet weapons & rockets using Nazi technology & expertise. Which is awkward af for my trolls cos they think only US used ex-Nazi engineers.

1/ The arrest in Montenegro of Russia's leading warblogger, Mikhail Zvinchuk, is causing shock in Russia. He and his wife potentially face 15 years' imprisonment if they are extradited to the US after an operation said to have involved the US National Security Agency. ⬇️

If you believe this, I have a bridge to sell you. The prime directive of the Conservative Party is to get and hold power. The idea that it would risk throwing away the opportunity merely because it involved an albeit uncomfortable arrangement with another right-wing party is clearly for the birds.

One of two Labour gains from Reform in Northumberland by-elections yesterday. Too early to know for sure we've passed peak Reform, but another encouraging sign.

hold up - will confidently interject on any subject, often with significant errors - can't actually read, instead relies on an elaborate method of parsing context through structure & likely words - looks financially impressive, actually built on huge amounts of unsustainable debt

So the Fairford incident is Iran, or Russia, or Israel, or home-grown far-right, or UK government false flag, or a training exercise. Glad that’s clear.

1/23 Sorry, this will be long... There is a lot of shouting about what happened in the Channel yesterday. So I want to go back to basic law. Not immigration policies or political rhetoric. At sea, the starting point is simple: Preservation of life comes first under all maritime conventions.

Emma Yeomans@yeomans.bsky.social

Worrying scenes in the Channel today, for all interested in asylum policy and maritime tactics. A small boat from Normandy spent more than 30 hours at sea. Those on board now on their 2nd rescue vessel as Border Force forced to play cat and mouse with far-right activists who have their own boat.

I suspect there may be some more collective spine finding now that the Dems are on course to take both Houses and Trump is looking very lame-duck-like.

The bar for progressive policies is: "did this unilaterally solve the entire gigantic systemic issue without making a single person sad?" The bar for conservative policies is: "did the people pushing this yell out the name of a real problem before doing something unrelated, cruel and ineffective?"

It's kind of cute that Iran thinks it can burn Trump with references to literature. If you want Trump to get your insults, try a UFC theme.

Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson quoted Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov to criticize U.S. foreign policy: The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to such a pass that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him.
